The New York Football Minute for July 20

Forty-two years ago today, man set foot on the moon for the first time. These days man is just trying to get out of his own way, trying to keep from getting ripped-off.

Last night we attended a gathering hosted by The Fan Freedom Project, a "national consumer organization dedicated to preserving the rights of live event fans. Speaking at the seminar were: Jon Potter, president of Fan Freedom; NYS Assemblyman Mark Weprin; CNBC's Darren Rovell and Deadspin founder Will Leitch.

The organization is fighting back against teams and venues who limit the fan's ability to re-sell tickets on the open market...

We, the fans, own the tickets that we buy.

That?s the way it?s always been, and the way it always should be.

But Ticketmaster, venues, and sports teams want to change that. They are implementing new technologies that may take away our ability to choose what we do with the tickets we buy.

It?s called ?Restrictive Paperless Ticketing,? and there are two ways it works: READ

Dispatch from The Jet Report on Free Agency

This from our good friends over at the tumblr site The Jet Report...

With the NFL Lockout final day in sight, as many reports claim that Thursday July 20th will be, attention will immediately turn to Free Agency. For the New York Jets, talk has centered all off season long around how to prioritze their two top Wide Receievers no longer under contract, Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards. However, the Jets will have many more questions to answer than Holmes and Edwards when the starting whistle blows in what will be a wild, never before seen, days long Free agency period.

For the Jets, the choice of who to keep, at what price and why at wideout seems clear. Santonio Holmes, the deep threat who helped win four games in the final minutes during the Jets key midseason stretch in 2010, brings the most unique big play skill set and resume of the group. A player whose type the Free Agency market has little of, outside of the Chargers Vincent Jackson and Minnesota?s Sidney Rice. MORE

Osi Won't Impede Lockout Settlement

Giants' DE Osi Umenyiora, one of ten plaintiffs listed on the action known as Brady vs NFL, will not be the one to slow up a settlement between the owners and players.

As per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News:

Osi Umenyiora has the power to block any new deal between the NFL and its locked-out players. He just doesn't intend to use it.

...Though Umenyiora likely will receive some financial compensation from the league for his participation in the suit on behalf of the decertified players union, the source said he is not looking to use his position for leverage in any way.

"He assumes they'll throw some cash at him or something," the source said. "But do you really think he's not going to sign off on a deal? No."
