MLB: Why Cardinals vs. Cubs Is the Best Rivalry in Baseball

ESPN may not like to acknowledge it, but the best rivalry in baseball isn't on the East Coast. It's in the Midwest, between one large market and a mid-major market.

The best rivalry is the St. Louis Cardinals vs. the Chicago Cubs.

Together, over the span of just over 125 years, the Cards and Cubs have played nearly 2200 games. The Cubs are winning the series 1100-1058-17. The teams have been competitive during the entirety of the series, meaning that fans are going to be treated to a good time every time they meet.

The fans also make this series a great rivalry for both cities. Red Sox fans and Yankee fans travel 217 miles to get between cities, but for Cubs and Cards fans, they have to travel 300 miles between the two cities. It may only be 83 miles, but those extra miles may be the difference between taking the car and flying, or having to fill up the car an extra time or not. Diehard fans want to travel to see their team in the opposing cities, and they travel the extra miles to see them.

Unfortunately for the Cubs, their fans haven't been able to cheer about a lot between these two ball clubs. Sure, they are winning the series, but that's about it. The Cardinals have 11 World Series titles to their name, the most recent being the miraculous 2011 season. The Cubs' most recent World Series title was in 1908. The Cardinals have 11 division titles and 18 National League Pennants. The Cubs hold 16 National League Pennants, but only five division titles.?

Perhaps the best battle between the two clubs was in 1998. Sammy Sosa was playing right field for the Cubs, while Mark McGwire was the Cardinals' first baseman. The two were poised for a great season, but no one guessed what would happen over that season.

What is the best rivalry in the MLB?

What is the best rivalry in the MLB?

  • Yankees vs. Red Sox

  • Cardinals vs. Cubs

  • Giants vs. Dodgers

By the end of May, McGwire had 27 home runs compared to Sosa's 13. But by the end of the month, Sosa stormed to 33 home runs, only four behind McGwire. The two would duel each other until one fateful series in early September. The Cubs visited the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, and McGwire was sitting on 60 home runs.?

In the first game, McGwire hit a home run to be the first player since 1961 to hit 61 home runs. On September 8, 1998, McGwire hit his shortest home run of the season to get to 62 home runs. Sosa would make it to 66 home runs that season, but McGwire would hold the record at 70 home runs in a season.

This battle may have been epic, but what really makes this series is its fans. Cardinals fans are perhaps the most knowledgeable fans in baseball. Not only do they respect the players, but they respect the game itself. The atmosphere at Busch Stadium cannot be matched in any other stadium.?

Wrigley Field is one of baseball's historic ballparks. Both Cardinal and Cub legends have battled the same battles at Wrigley, batting in the same batter's box, warmed up in the same bullpens. Being in a place with so much history connects the current teams to those teams of the past.?

The Cards vs. Cubs rivalry is the best rivalry in baseball because it is a territorial rivalry. These teams and fans travel far to declare their supremacy, and have been fighting with each other ever since the first game was played more than 125 years ago.?

When these two teams play, they play for keeps.

To Singapore... from an expat returning home

Singapore gets more things right than other countries, even if its citizens disagree

By David Fedo

ON THE eve of National Day, after a little more than five years of living and working in Singapore, my wife Susan and I take leave of this amazing country. We will return to our home just outside of Boston, Massachusetts, to take up our old lives among our American family and friends.

But the truth is, after Singapore, our lives will never be the same.

Singapore?s impact on most expatriates and other visitors, no matter how long they reside on this island, is often forever. It?s the palpable feeling that somehow Singapore gets more things right than most other countries, and that day-to-day life here is on the whole better than in many other places. Not perfect, of course, but better.

Think of the excellent schools, polytechnics and universities, for example, and the fact that there seems to be less unemployment, homelessness and crime here than elsewhere ? bugaboos that plague so many other nations in today?s volatile economy.

The diverse races and religious groups respect one another. The food is wonderful, with a variety unmatched anywhere, even in Paris, New York or Beijing. Medical care is exemplary. The green spaces, now crowned by?Gardens by the Bay, are spectacular. Younger and now even some older Singaporeans may take these virtues for granted; those of us who are foreigners do not.

Our story is not an unfamiliar one for expatriates. Susan and I arrived here on a contract for two years, and have stayed for three more. Our work for Wheelock College (its home campus is in Boston) and our imported bachelor?s degree in early childhood education has been a pleasure. We loved our Singapore students, all young women committed to the nation?s children, and our faculty ? a collaborative group from Wheelock-Boston, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the Seed Institute ? have been extraordinary.

Wheelock has just signed a long-term agreement with the Singapore Institute of Technology and will be in this country for many years to come. Susan and I will watch from afar as the Wheelock-Singapore partnership grows and flourishes.

Beyond all of its other virtues and attractions, including its economic and commercial successes, the arts in Singapore over recent years have truly ?blossomed?, to use the word Professor Tommy Koh does in an article in the National University of Singapore?s Alumnus magazine. ?We were once described by our critics as a ?cultural desert?,? he explains, but says those days are gone for good ? ?no one would say the same thing today?.

Prof Koh is right. Yet I wonder if many Singaporeans fully appreciate the remarkable blossoming of the arts ? call it an explosion ? through the seasonal festivals and year-round array of productions, performances, publications and exhibits, as much as those of us who come from outside Singapore.

Too often I have heard Singaporeans downplay their country?s artistic achievements, saying ?It (the play or gallery opening) was okay, I guess, but it?s not New York or London.?

But Singapore doesn?t have to be New York or London. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra can stand on its own merits, and so can the experimental theatre productions by any number of talented groups here. The museums mount exhibits of interest to Asians and Westerners, as do Singapore?s diverse galleries. The Arts House is a jewel in the cultural life of this country.

Poetry is a special interest of mine, and Singapore?s best young poets ? Toh Hsien Min, Cyril Wong, Yong Shu Hoong, Alvin Pang and Felix Cheong, among others ? have all created a lively forum for verse that challenges old assumptions about Singapore?s allegedly scant impact on readers here and abroad. Speaking of poets, what small press in South-east Asia has done more to advance their works than Singapore?s own Ethos Books, headed by Fong Hoe Fang and Chan Wai Han?

Yes, there is no perfect place, as the English statesman Thomas More wrote in his book Utopia, whose title may be translated as ?nowhere?. Singapore has its own deficiencies too, and its citizens are only too quick to point them out.

But in leaving this small island republic, I urge Singaporeans to see, as so many expatriates see, the superiority of Singapore over so many other countries ? and not only countries in South-east Asia, but around the globe. I do love America, and it will be fun going home, but I will miss Singapore, its special pleasures and my many friends here forever.

The writer was executive director and visiting scholar of the Wheelock College (Boston, United States) Centre for International Education, Leadership and Innovation (Singapore) since June 2007.

Monetary Policy Role in EU Debt Crisis Limited: Zoellick

As markets eagerly await a decision from the European Central Bank (ECB), which holds its policy meeting on Thursday, Robert Zoellick, former president of the World Bank warns that monetary easing will do little to solve the region?s debt crisis.

Getty Images

Former World Bank President Robert Zoellick

?Monetary policy fundamentally buys time. It doesn't deal with the fundamentals,? Zoellick told CNBC in Singapore on Monday.

Following ECB President Mario Draghi?s pledge last week to do ?whatever it takes? to protect the euro zone from collapse, there were news reports on Friday that he was discussing a rate cut and new liquidity program, among other measures.

Zoellick, however, says what is most critical right now is that debt-laden nations like Spain and Italy implement fiscal and structural reforms.

?They have to make reforms. The Germans are right, they (Spain and Italy) have to fix their fiscal situation but also structural reforms for competitiveness,? he said.

He added that euro zone nations need to ensure that Spain and Italy have access to funding as they carry out their reforms - through measures such as the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) or euro bonds.

?The most difficult issue is (avoiding a) mismatch between the time that the reforms will take effect and their financing,? he said.

In addition to this, he says ailing Spanish and Italian banks must be recapitalized. The European Union earlier this month agreed to lend up to 100 billion euros to rescue Spanish banks.

Role of the US in the Debt Crisis

Discussing the role of the United States in solving the European debt crisis, Zoellick says first and foremost, the U.S. has to get its own fiscal house in order.

?The tendency is to kick the can down the path and maintain the status quo through inaction. That won't work this time,? he said.

?There's over a trillion dollars in spending cuts that will be made in defense and non-defense unless you act,? he added.

By the end of the year, if Congress and President Barack Obama cannot agree on deficit-reduction targets, a series of tax increases and automatic budget cuts are set to kick in.

If the U.S. is successful in reining in its budget deficit, it would be a big boost in confidence for global markets, Zoellick added.

UFC on FOX 4, Roy Nelson, Chris Weidman: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.30.12

It's fight week, that precious time in the news cycle?when the public relations drones at the UFC and FOX do their best to spawn storylines that will rope in viewers while media members of various degrees of accumen regurgitate or attempt spins?on what they perceive the real stories to be.? Yes, it's a kind of dance, but the music is lovely, and at the end of?it everyone gets to keep a goody bag of memories, plus whatever silverware they can steal.??With UFC on FOX 4 slated for Saturday, the?week will be spent dwelling on all things related to said show, and is that such a bad thing?? We're going to get to see?some perennial favorites in action,?so I'd say no, it's not bad at all.? Just be prepared to see at least one item about UFC on FOX 4 every day.? I'm certainly prepared.

  • A one-hour special called "UFC's Road to the Octagon", which hypes the UFC on FOX 4 main card,?began airing yesterday on FOX.? It will be shown again (and again, and again) on?the different FOX-owned networks between now and Saturday night, but since such factors as where you live and whether you have cable, satellite dish or a coat hanger antenna on your TV make it impossible for me to tell you specifically when you can watch it, I'll just say check your local listings.? ?

?

  • Roy Nelson, who won "The Ultimate Fighter - Season 10" (the season with Kimbo Slice) and has been struggling to find a place in the UFC's heavyweight division ever since, has been tapped to coach the upcoming sixteenth season of the beloved (heh-heh) reality TV show opposite Shane Carwin.? Nelson's also begun his campaign of irreverent hype by releasing?the names of people the UFC has forbidden him from using as coaches on the show.? As usual, MMAFighting ace reporter Ariel Helwani has the sweetness: ??

Former Strikeforce fighter turned Bellator and TNA Wrestling star Muhammed Lawal, pro wrestling legend Kurt Angle and Victor Conte, the founder of BALCO Laboratories, are "non-UFC allowed," according to Nelson.? Nelson's manager Mike Kogan confirmed to MMAFighting.com that the UFC will not allow the trio to appear on the show.

?

  • Chris Weidman is riding high off his dominant destruction of the usually deadly Mark Munoz, so why not capitalize on that momentum by hounding UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva for a shot at the belt?? Actually, when Silva's manager Jorge Guimaraes calls you an "amateur", I guess you're not really hounding, you're just defending yourself.? Am I right?? Anyway, here's Weidman defending himself, courtesy of MMAWeekly:

"I read them and it's kind of crazy.? The managers they have no right to start putting down professional athletes.? He put me, and (Alan) Belcher, and (Tim) Boetsch down and he's trying to draw attention away from the fact that I'm the No. 1 contender, and then called us amateurs, and we're all top ten fighters," Weidman told MMAWeekly.com when reached for comment.

?

Yeah, tell 'em, Chris.

That's all for now.

You don?t need to have a lot of experience to start a work from home business, nor do you need to have large amounts of money, you do need to have some basic computer skills. If you can be able to devote a few hours a week to run your business, then you are up for a great start.

With rising gas prices, the cost of commuting has gone high. If you live in the city, having to deal with rush hour traffic about twenty times a month is not only stressful, but expensive. Taking the bus might be an option you are considering, but buses aren?t always on time and you may not want to deal with some of the people on the bus. The best option you can consider is starting your own home business. Here are five work from home ideas that are guaranteed to assist you with a home business:

1. Sell Products Online: If the idea of opening a retail store appeals to you, but you prefer to work from the comfort of your home, this is the work from home idea for you. Determine the product you want to sell, then find a reliable company to purchase inventory from. Even if you want to hand-craft products, such as jewelry, you will need to obtain the materials first. Once you have found a reliable, cost-efficient company to purchase inventory from, set up a website to market your product. Make sure your website contains no errors, is professional, and is easy to navigate; otherwise, visitors won?t stay long. Use social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, to your advantage. The more hits your site gets, the more products you will sell, which means more money in your pocket.

2. Offer a Service Online: You can offer many different services online, such as editing papers, reviewing legal documents, providing graphic designs, and creating architectural blueprints. Make a list of your talents, interests, and qualifications. Then, determine a way can you use them to offer a service online.

3. Become an eBook Publisher: Writing eBooks from home can be a great way to earn money, because eBooks are easily transferred over the Internet without the hassle of having to ship the product. If writing isn?t your forte or you don?t want to write, you can hire a ghostwriter.

4. Open a Theme-Based-Content Website: For this work from home idea, you build a website on any topic that interests you and that you?re educated about. Once your website is user-friendly and error-free, use Internet marketing techniques to build traffic. After the traffic is sufficient, enroll in the Google AdSense program that allows website owners to display advertisements on their sites. When visitors click on the ads, you make money.

5. Market Affiliate Products and Services: Marketing affiliate products and services is similar to being a salesperson paid on a commission basis. You market a company?s products and services through affiliate links on the Internet. When your marketing develops a sale, you are paid part of the money. This is nice because you don?t have to do the selling yourself, and you don?t have to deal with the customer.

Whether you want to offer your services online, sell unique products on the Internet, become an eBook publisher, open a theme-based-content website, or market affiliate products and services, three things are crucial for the success of any type of home business. Research the method you choose, so that you can make more money than the person who didn?t do their research. Take advantage of social networking, so that you can increase the number of potential customers. Lastly, do something you?re passionate about, so that your enjoyment increases the quality of your work. People are at their best, when they enjoy not only the work environment, but the content of the work.

Yesterday's Complextions: Reflextions of Complicated Emotions ...

My husband?s grandmother was waiting for us as we pulled up to the car port of her senior living community.? Still pretty spry for her 90+ year old body she is always elegantly adorned in sharp contrast with the family matriarch who quietly lies dying in her home twenty minutes to the south.? Dressed in a vibrant purple blouse with white capris, her matching purse hung over the front of her walker as she quickly made her way to the car, seeming chipper and thankful for company and the opportunity to go on an outing.? As we drove away my eyes turned back to towards the funeral home across the street, cars filled the parking lot and people filed out.? I found it eerily symbolic of the reason for our trip.

As we drove the same road I had traveled just last week after June?s funeral, grandma told us stories from her youth, explaining that before her family moved into town she had to trim the lantern wicks every single day to keep them from smoking and soiling the house.? She described the way that she ran from room to room turning switches on and off and flushing the toilet when they moved into their home in the town that had electricity and indoor plumbing.? She reminisced about the covered wagon rides that served as the school bus in the olden days and the way they were so bumpy from the rocks in the dirt roads.?? She said that in the winter the bed of the wagon was lined with hay meant to insulate your feet from the frigid air while the wheels were replaced with? wooden skis allowing the wagon to glide along swiftly in the fallen snow.? She made meme giggle when she let out an uncharacteristic ?God Damn It? as she? described the ?school bus driver? and the way he?d swear at the kids and wen she told the story of how she and her siblings tipped over an outhouse one year as a Halloween prank, forfeiting their ability to celebrate it again for several years.? I enjoyed the drive, savoring each words of her stories, both for my children to hear, but also for the appreciation of the life and experiences she was willing to share.

We were headed to a family gathering for her daughter, my husband?s Aunt Bev who, several months ago was diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer.? The cancer has already spread to several other spots and she is scheduled for a surgery this week.? As we drove I wondered what it was like for this woman, who is approaching a century of life to be traveling to a gathering of love and support that really was much more likely a final good bye for her child.

As we approached the town and crossed over a marsh like part of the mountain river, my mind retraced the many times I?d traveled this route as a child with my parents to visit my own grandmother.?? Visiting this town is often a painful reminder of the absence of my parents and family in my own life and the reasons for that current void.?? While most days I can busy myself with my current life and focus on the good things that I have, the aching echoes of the past were in the forefront of my conscience, creating a feeling of tension and anxiety to trickle through my veins.? Memories flooded into me and I struggled to keep from screaming out in rage before arriving at the fire hall that was our destination.

?BINGO!?? we all yelled, instead of ?surprise? because Aunt Bev?s love of bingo made it the perfect decoy reason for her to enter hall where a crowd of several dozen people waited in eager anticipation for her arrival.?? The moment she entered the room her face turned crimson and a wave of emotion and tears spilled out of her as she realized her closest family and friends had gathered here for her.? I watched as her daughters struggled not to cry as they embraced her and sat across from her husband, who in his own gruff way, was undoubtedly touched by that moment, struggling with the awkwardness of trying to be stoic but yet knowing his wife was dying.? I had to fight back my own swell of emotions as? I watched as her mother embrace he in a large and uncharacteristically genuine hug, smiling, sharing her affection.? I wondered what Grandma was thinking and feeling knowing that could be one of the last chances she got to touch and hold her daughter.?? The moment was beautiful in its morbid poignancy.

I had never been at the fire hall before but I knew that some where on the walls hung some sort of reference to my own grandfather, Henry Smith.? Dying in the late 1950?s, I never got to meet him, but I?ve often heard stories that he was a kind and respectable man who perished while fighting a fire during the time he was the fire chief.? I struggle to explain why this felt so profound to me, except to say that my family heritage is so clouded by embarrassment and shame. Grandpa?s life and his death has always felt like the bright and shining bit of hope that I could some how rise above the shadows of the violence and madness that have been bequeathed to me.? I gradually made my way around the room scouring the plaques until I found the one that said ?Past Fire Chiefs? and there it was.? Engraved upon a simple tag? it? read ?Henry Smith: 1957-1959.??? A brief two years was all he had until his life had ended.? Then I made my way to a corner in the back of the room where there hung a 1957 photo with portraits of each fire man. ? It was not long before I found him because I knew what I was looking for, as the same portrait hangs on the wall of my mother?s home.? I stood and stared at it for a few moments, trying to figure out what emotion I was feeling when I realized that I have his nose.?? Perhaps the significance of the realization would be more apparent if I shared the fact that my husband has often said that the first thing he noticed about me when we met decades ago, was my ?cute little nose that just barely stuck out beneath my ski goggles.?? My husband who spent the entire drive to the fire hall grimacing in pain, hardly speaking a word, and radiating his hurt and anger as he struggled to contain his emotions all present because of things I?ve done.

I felt? and feel so alone as my brain struggles to comprehend all the emotions that swirled around and in me yesterday.? I was reminded of my grief for June as I drove the same road that I had after her funeral the week before for the purpose of greeting an Aunt who is dying of cancer, while transporting her mother, knowing the woman may never see her child again, while desperately wanting my children to remember fondly their interactions with their Great Grandmother before she dies herself because I never had a chance like that because my childhood was traumatic and abusive , while watching as my husband struggle with some intense emotional pain that is entirely my fault, while driving to my mother?s home town, where I was reminded of the fact that I?ve been estranged from my family for several months because of their insanity and abuse which leaves me with a constant void that just simply always aches,? to enter a fire hall where a picture of my grandfather, who I never met, and who I?ve always thought was my only link to sanity, hung on the wall when I realize that I look like him.

I so badly wanted to reach out to my grandfather, to find some shred of hope and dignity to cherish, but grasping for it felt like I needed to reach across a blazing fire and that there was no way to reach it without getting burnt.?? I feel so desperate for some sort of connection to fill the void within me for the days where the ache of absence of my family hurts more than the damage from their madness. I am just confused by all of this and am frozen in this moment because of the complexity of this.

87% The Dark Knight Rises

All Critics (266) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (231) | Rotten (35)

There was an opportunity here for Nolan to show us another way, to (again) stretch the boundaries of what is possible in a superhero film. Instead, alas, the latter half of The Dark Knight Rises retreats toward conventionality.

I'm not arguing that Rises should be Singin' in the Rain. But its Wagnerian ambitions are not matched by its material. It hasn't earned its darkness.

The biggest surprise may just be how satisfying Nolan has made his farewell to a Dark Knight trilogy that many fans will wish he'd extend to a 10-part series, at least.

Others will see it differently, but for me this is a disappointingly clunky and bombastic conclusion to a superior series -- Nolan's biggest and worst movie to date.

The director and cowriter/brother Jonathan Nolan pay heed to Wayne's wounded emotional arc. And the film is a feat of painstakingly crafted closure.

TDKR completes on the great trilogies in movie history.

... Nolan thinks small in a big way... providing an imperfect yet satisfying conclusion, and that in itself is quite an accomplishment.

Christopher Nolan's Batman saga comes to an end with this engrossing and absolutely spellbinding installment...

The weakest of Nolan's three Batmans with offputting politics and a dull villain but its fascinatingly vertical construction and Catwoman save it.

Rises a Satisfying Conclusion to Nolan's Trilogy.

It gets away from the great Christopher Nolan for a time during the film's soft middle, but he brings the conclusion to his Batman trilogy home with a bang.

All in all, the gifted (writer-director Christopher) Nolan's latest epic is typically well-constructed (despite a plot hole here and there) and beautiful to look at.

Enjoying TDKR requires messiah-like trust in Nolan that he'll eventually reward us, as long as we don't get too hung up on all the plot holes and leftover genre tropes.

A bit of a letdown, containing nothing close to the brilliance of the late Heath Ledger's performance in the previous film, but it doesn't glorify nihilism, chaos and anarchy like the previous film did because it's villains aren't charismatic.

The summer's most grandiose, grown-up, operatic superhero movie, one that makes others look, in comparison, like kids playing around in action-figure pajamas.

A fantastic conclusion even if a bit bloated.

Demonstra que um longa baseado em super-her?is pode ser adulto, investir no realismo e representar um passatempo escapista sem, com isso, desrespeitar a intelig?ncia de seu p?blico.

Nolan's final Batman film delivers grand excitement, grounded performances and the kind of conservative themes rarely embraced in blockbuster films.

Complex and comprehensive, beautiful if bloated, is nonetheless superlative filmmaking and even though over 160 minutes manages to rivet the senses in every frame.

The Bane voice drove me crazy, but I still liked it.

In his last adventure under Christopher Nolan's guidance, the Dark Knight never quite rises to the occasion.

If Nolan has accomplished nothing else here, he has made one of the more human movies of this type.

A joyless, bitter epic without a hint of exhilaration.

Ties up all the loose ends and gives a proper sendoff to Nolan's "Batman" trilogy.

The belief that one man can become a symbol for something greater will continue to drive people to this trilogy for years to come.

Once Batman finally gets back to action, with the audience's dander by that time primed to the max, the film explodes in scene after dazzling scene of air to street attacks and counter attacks.

Oh No They Didn't! - Jasmine Villegas talks about the emotional ...

You may recognize 19-year-old Jasmine Villegas as that girl who got real close to Justin Bieber in his ?Baby? video (like holding hands, touching faces close), sending millions of Beliebers to jealous-town, USA. Well, Jasmine?s back with her own video premiere for ?Didn?t Mean It?-- and we are still wiping our tears over her mission to bring awareness to domestic abuse.

?Didn?t Mean It?, which premiered on Buzzworthy last week, is one of those rare, bone-chilling videos. We watch as Jasmine gets slapped by her boyfriend and dragged across the room. We watch as she struggles to let her abusive boyfriend go. Then, we watch as the singer finds the amazing strength to pack up her suitcases and leave her abuser. You can watch the video below.

TRIGGER WARNING: ABUSE

Domestic violence is all too real for Jasmine, who was in an abusive relationship for over a year. "What he 'didn't mean' was all the times he put me down, all the verbal and emotional abuse. It's all the negative things he said and did including the times he physically abused me," explained Jasmine about the title of her song.

Through her music video the soulful songstress is using her own experience to create awareness for domestic violence, to let victims know that they don?t need to live in shame and to inspire all to take action against abuse. The end of ?Didn?t Mean It? shares some scary statistics:

+Nearly 15 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year.

+ One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner.

+Only 33% of teens who have ever been in an abusive relationship have reported it.

Domestic violence is far-reaching and under-reported. If you or someone you know is a victim, do like Jasmine and get help ASAP with resources such as Love Is Respect. Jasmine's video is really resonating with her fans too. A few days after the video premiered, Love Is Respect saw a big increase in in calls, chats and texts about dating abuse. Jasmine took some time to chat with us about her music video, her personal experience with dating abuse and how to speak out about it.

MTV ACT: How did you find the courage to leave your abusive relationship? Who or what did you turn to for comfort?

JASMINE: What gave me the courage to leave was honestly God. It got to the point where my self-esteem was so low that I actually started believing it was my fault and that I deserved it. In my weakest moment, God me sent an angel who put a stop to everything. In one of our more severe fights, there was a random stranger outside the house who heard the fighting and called the police. When the cops came I knew it was probably going to be my only escape. That's when I broke down and realized how dangerous my situation was and I got the strength to walk away from the relationship and NEVER LOOK BACK.

MTV ACT: What advice can you give to someone who is currently in an abusive relationship or whose friend are in abusive relationship?

JASMINE: My advice is that if you are in or know someone that's in an abusive relationship it NEVER gets better. I tried to believe that things would change for the better but it only got worst. My advice would be to go to organizations like Love Is Respect and research online how you can get help. There's also a hotline number you can call 24 hrs a day 1-866-331-9474 to speak to someone who can help you. You can also text "loveis" to 77054. Overall just remember that you have to take action and get out! You can't ignore the situation, it will not go away.

MTV ACT: Since your video premiere Love Is Respect received an increase in calls, texts and chat. How do you feel about the fact that your video is sparking people to take action?

JASMINE: That makes all the work we put into the video worthwhile! That's the reason I wanted to share my story. I love being an artist but it's the most rewarding feeling when your music speaks for a cause and makes a difference in someone's life.

MTV ACT: What can others do to prevent domestic abuse and raise awareness about this deeply important issue?

JASMINE: Domestic abuse is a huge problem especially amongst teenagers and I feel that's partly because the issue doesn't have the awareness it needs. I remember in my school they talked about different kids of issues but I don't remember anyone ever speaking about domestic violence. Even if you haven't experienced domestic violence the chances are there is someone around that has or is currently going through it. I would encourage everyone to visit websites like Love Is Respect or No More and get information about spreading awareness.

No it is not about Bieber, it is about this guy.

Utah Ski Resort Offers California Residents Free Skiing All Winter Long

Eagle Point Ski Resort locared in Southern UtahThe ski season may still be months away but Eagle Point Ski Resort, located in Beaver, Utah, has already announced its operating schedule, along with some terrific deals for the winter ahead. In addition to offering free skiing on every Thursday in January, the resort is granting California residents fee-free access to their slopes all season long.

After being closed for eight years, Eagle Point was purchased by a new ownership group back in 2010. Since that time the resort has undergone a transformation as millions of dollars were spent to improve the facilities both on and off the slopes. The result is a revamped one-stop ski destination in southern Utah with plenty of amenities. The resort, which receives an average of 450 inches of annual snowfall, features 40 named runs spread out over 600 skiable acres and 1500 vertical feet. Five lifts and two snow cats ensure guests don't have to wait in long lines, while onsite lodging and dining mean that upon arrival they don't have to leave the premises either.

For the entire 2012-2013 ski season Eagle Point is offering residents of California free skiing and snowboarding. Visitors from the Golden State will simply need to provide a name and email address and they'll gain unlimited access to the lifts and ski runs. Resort ownership sees this promotion as a way to raise awareness about their boutique ski destination and help get the word out to skiers and snowboarders in nearby states.

Eagle Point, which is also available for private rental, is scheduled to open for the winter on December 21.

Friend defends man held in Md. shooting plot

WASHINGTON (AP) ? To his friends, Neil E. Prescott was a "gentle giant" ? a physically towering young man with a background in computers and electronics and a sarcastic, even biting, sense of humor that people close to him knew to shrug off as innocuous.

But police say they had no choice but to take it seriously when Prescott threatened to shoot up his workplace and referred to himself as "a joker," comments that raised particular alarm in the wake of last week's mass shooting at a Colorado theater during the latest Batman movie. The man accused in the Colorado shootings dyed his hair reddish-orange, and New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has said the man called himself the Joker ? a reference to Batman's nemesis.

Prescott was taken into custody early Friday at his apartment in Maryland, where officers found several thousand rounds of ammunition and a cache of about two dozen weapons including semi-automatic rifles and pistols. He was receiving an emergency psychiatric evaluation at a hospital and had not been charged as of Saturday afternoon.

Two friends told The Associated Press Saturday that they couldn't imagine that Prescott, who was in the process of being fired or already had lost his job, intended to be taken seriously when he allegedly told a supervisor: "I'm a joker and I'm gonna load my guns and blow everybody up."

"Neil's the kind of guy who had the ability to say the wrong thing at the wrong time and not mean anything by it. So to him, he thinks it's funny. He's kind of a joker," said Wesley Weber, who said his friend, at 6 feet 7 inches, was a "gentle giant" prone to bouts of exaggeration who "talked big but didn't walk the walk."

Prescott is "no stranger to sarcasm regardless of political correctness," and is fond of T-shirts with sarcastic, provocative or even inflammatory remarks, said another friend Mike Cochran. When first approached by officers, police say, Prescott was wearing a shirt that said "Guns don't kill people. I do."

"The Neil I know made those comments sarcastically in an environment where he felt he could make them without being taken seriously," Cochran said in an email.

Friends say that over the years, Prescott had been interested in hobbies such as computers, electronics and ham radios. His clique of friends would gather several years ago at nighttime parties to play multi-player video games and consume the highly caffeinated Jolt cola, Weber recalled. A sometime disc jockey, he'd also spin house music at Baltimore nightclubs and was the DJ for Cochran's bachelor party in 2005.

In recent years, though, he'd cultivated a passion for collecting firearms. He'd practice his shot at the training range, friends said, and communicate online with fellow gun enthusiasts about the ins and outs of firearm equipment and gun laws. At least some of the firearms recovered from his apartment in Crofton, near Annapolis, appear to have been acquired legally, authorities said.

A search for Neil Prescott on a website that tracks users' online activities led to a profile that appears to be him on mdshooters.com, a website for Maryland gun hobbyists. On it, he trades advice about firearms with technical know-houw and at times conveys concern about break-ins near his apartment and details interactions with the police.

Cochran, who also posts on the site, said he received one message from Prescott last November that said: "Might be sleeping in tomorrow, just had a suspicious male at my door. Notified PD but am gonna be lookin out tonight. Some crazy breakins near me recently."

In March, he provoked a spirited back-and-forth on the site when he complained that two police officers responding to a possible break-in at a nearby apartment "told me never to answer the door on my own property carrying." He said he called a sergeant to complain.

Last week, he was still on the site, talking with fellow users about 30-round magazines and boasting about his night-vision goggles.

"During the power outage i spent lots of time loading mags and mounting lights, when the zombie apocalypse comes i'll be ready," he wrote.

Maryland state court records for Prescott list only a speeding ticket in 2007.

Police say Prescott, an employee of a subcontractor for software and mailroom supplier Pitney Bowes, made the threats during two Monday morning phone conversations with a supervisor. The supervisor, who declined to comment Saturday to a reporter who showed up at his house, said the comments made him fear for his life and that he was aware of Prescott's weapons' cache.

Prescott at one point said he wished to see his supervisor's "brain splatter all over the sidewalk," but also acknowledged that he shouldn't be saying such things over the phone, according to an application in support of a search warrant. The threats were then reported to the police, who paid an initial visit to Prescott's apartment on Thursday before taking him into custody Friday morning.

Cochran said he's known Prescott since 2001, when they were colleagues at a technical support outsourcing company. He said Prescott was a network engineer.

"With his skill set and education he would have had no problems finding other work with good pay. Neil did not at any point indicate to me that he had problems with where he was working," Cochran wrote.

Pitney Bowes spokeswoman Carol Wallace said Prescott had not been on any company property in at least four months. It wasn't clear why he was losing his job.

Weber said that while he didn't know the exact context of the threat, he thought it was the kind of comment that is taken more seriously now than it may have been years ago, especially one week after the Colorado shooting.

"We live in a different world now," he said.

And the detector, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer or AMS, has already broken all records in registering some 17 billion cosmic rays and storing data on them for analysis, Nobel physics laureate Samuel Ting told a news conference.

"The question is: where is the universe made from anti-matter?" said Ting. "It could be out there somewhere far away producing particles that we could detect with the AMS."

Physicists say that the event 13.7 billion years ago that brought the known universe into existence and has been dubbed the "Big Bang" must have created equal amounts of matter and anti-matter. But then anti-matter largely disappeared.

Why that happened is one of the great mysteries of the cosmos which are being investigated through the AMS and scientific analysts back on the ground at CERN, the European particle physics research centre where Ting spoke.

The purpose of the AMS programme, he said, "is to search for phenomena that so far we have not had the imagination or the technology to discover".

Some researchers have suggested that the invisible "dark matter" estimated to make up about 25 percent of the known universe could be linked to anti-matter, but others say that is highly unlikely.

Wafting veil

These scientists argue that anti-matter could not survive in the close proximity to parts of the visible cosmos that latest observations suggest dark matter occupies - sometimes like a wafting veil between planets and stars.

Matter and anti-matter are almost identical, with the same mass but opposite spin and energy charges. They can form separate parts of some elementary particles but if they are mixed together they are both destroyed instantaneously.

Ting was speaking at a news conference with a team of U.S. astronauts who took the detector, which was developed and built at CERN, up to the ISS in May last year on the last mission of the U.S. space shuttle Endeavour.

He said that so far the $2 billion detector, with its powerful magnets that bend particles with positive and negative charges in different directions, had functioned perfectly and not one of its multiple backup systems had been needed so far.

Ting, a 75-year-old professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, supervises the research on the material gathered from the AMS from CERN, guiding a team of some 500 scientists in many countries, including Russia and China.

He is however cautious about how long it will take for real discoveries to compare with the sighting announced this month of a totally new particle, believed to be the long-sought Higgs Boson, in CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

The boson is part of a force called the Higgs Field that turned the minute pieces of flying debris after the Big Bang into solid matter, bringing them together to form galaxies, stars and planets, and later life.

Asked when he expected to be able to report the first indications of dark matter or of an anti-matter mirror universe, Ting replied: "As late as possible," explaining that the analysis had to be done scrupulously and "step by step".

It would be at least 50 years "before anyone would be foolish enough to launch an experiment like this again" now that the U.S. space programme was shut down and current Chinese and Russian spacecraft could not take a load like the AMS, he said. (Editing by Mark Heinrich)
