Police: Russian killer wrote Pussy Riot message to mislead us

Nikolay Alexandrov / AP

Igor Danilevsky, who allegedly confessed to killing two women, speaks to his mother in a court as he appears in the court in Kazan, about 450 miles east of Moscow on Friday.

By NBC News staff and wire services

A college teacher who confessed to killing two women in their Russian apartment says he scrawled "Free Pussy Riot" in blood on the wall to mislead investigators, police said Friday.

The initial hint that the killer was inspired by the jailed Pussy Riot punk band provoked new criticism by a Russian Orthodox Church official who said the group's supporters now had "blood on their conscience."

The official also called on human rights groups and celebrities such as Madonna and Paul McCartney to?"disavow" their support of Pussy Riot to?prevent other such violent acts, The Moscow Times reported.

But the police report said the crime was not inspired by the group or its protest against President Vladimir Putin in a Moscow cathedral for which three band members were jailed.

The 38-year-old suspect, identified as Igor Danilevsky,?told police he killed a former classmate and her 76-year-old mother and then wrote the words on the wall "to draw suspicion away from himself and portray it as a ritual killing," the regional Interior Ministry said.

The bodies were found on Wednesday and state television repeatedly showed images of the slogan daubed on the kitchen wall of the apartment in Kazan, capital of the Tatarstan region, about 450 miles east of Moscow. According to The Moscow Times, investigators believe the?killings of?the women took place sometime between Aug. 24 and?26.

Protesters put head covers on sculptures in Norway to show their continued support of the jailed Russian punk rock group called "Pussy Riot." NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

The "punk prayer" Pussy Riot performed at the Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral in February was a protest against Putin and the support for him from the Russian Orthodox Church.

Russian punk band Pussy Riot appeals conviction

The jailing of three band members for two years drew international criticism and opposition leaders hope Pussy Riot supporters will join street protests starting in September.

The Moscow Times reported that Mikhail Kuznetsov, a?lawyer for?the plaintiffs in?the trial, said "tragedies like the?one in?Kazan ? would have been avoided" if the women had not been convicted of?inciting religious hatred.?

Police said Danilevsky,?the suspect in the killings in Kazan, had pretended to be courting the younger victim after she helped him pay off his debts by borrowing hundreds of thousands of roubles (tens of thousands of dollars) from banks.

Danilevsky allegedly promised the woman they would take a vacation together, but grabbed a knife and killed her during a quarrel after he told her they would be unable to take the trip.

Handout / Reuters

The words "Free Pussy Riot" written on a wall are seen inside an apartment in Kazan, Russia, in this undated image released to Reuters on Thursday. Two women were found stabbed to death in the apartment.

Russian court sentences Pussy Riot rockers to 2 years in prison

State television showed what it said was the suspect, his face blurred out, calmly giving an account of the killings.

Police said Danilevsky had taken the knife used in the killings with him after the murders and stole 100,000 roubles ($3,100) and two mobile phones from the apartment.

He was detained after the phones and the knife were found on the balcony of the apartment where he lived with his parents. A court ordered him held in custody for two months, and he could be imprisoned for life if convicted of the killings.

Reuters contributed to this report.

US threatens legal action over SEAL's bin Laden book

The Pentagon threatened legal action against the former Navy SEAL who has written a book recounting his role in the May 2011 raid that killed Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.

Just days before the release of the first-hand account of the operation on Pakistani soil, the Pentagon's top lawyer, Jeh Johnson, told the author he had broken his promise to abide by a strict non-disclosure agreement signed before he retired from the military this year.

"In the judgment of the Department of Defense, you are in material breach and violation of the non-disclosure agreements you signed" and the Pentagon is considering "all remedies legally available," Johnson said in a letter to the author, who writes under the pseudonym Mark Owen.

The former Navy commando's book "No Easy Day" is due to be released next week but has already sparked a wave of publicity and controversy.

He signed documents during his service and before he retired promising "never to divulge" classified information and to submit any manuscript to the Pentagon before publishing, Johnson said.

The Pentagon's general counsel noted that some copies of the book had appeared on Wednesday -- before next week's scheduled release -- and warned: "Further dissemination of your book will aggravate your breach and violation of your agreements," it said.

The letter did not indicate whether the book had revealed secrets that could endanger US forces but made clear that simply by failing to clear the manuscript with the military, the Navy SEAL had broken faith with his obligations.

Top military and intelligence officials, who met to discuss the book on Wednesday, have combed through the text in recent days looking for any disclosure of sensitive tactics or techniques but so far have not pointed to any worrisome revelations.

The Navy SEAL team member's version of bin Laden's death at his Abbottabad compound differs from previous accounts offered by President Barack Obama's administration and comes amid a politically-charged debate about the handling of state secrets in the wake of the raid.

The Pentagon made clear that the publisher, Penguin's Dutton, also faced potential legal jeopardy over the book.

"I write to you to formally advise you of your material breach and violation of your agreements, and to inform you that the Department is considering pursuing against you, and all those acting in concert with you, all remedies legally available to us in light of this situation," it said.

The publisher has moved up the scheduled release date from September 11 to September 4, as media coverage has fueled a flood of orders for the book.

The book provides fresh details about the May 2011 raid, describing how bin Laden was first shot in the head as he peered out of a door and then pumped with bullets as he convulsed on the floor.

Previous official accounts said bin Laden had appeared in a doorway and ducked back into his bedroom, leading the US commandos to suspect he might be retrieving a weapon.

But the author said bin Laden was shot in the head by the SEAL team when he leaned out of the doorway and was found bleeding from his wound when commandos made their way to his room, according to excerpts cited in media reports and confirmed to AFP by defense officials.

The Al-Qaeda leader was mortally wounded and twitching on the floor as two women cried over his body. The team pushed aside the women and then fired more shots at him, according to the book.

We "fired several rounds," the author wrote in the book. "The bullets tore into him, slamming his body into the floor until he was motionless."

Fox News has revealed what it says is the identity of the author, a former Navy SEAL who also took part in the 2009 operation that rescued Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates.

Obama administration officials have appeared anxious to avoid having to discuss or defend in detail an operation they deem a major triumph, while suggesting the book did not shed any new light on the raid.

HTC EVO 4G LTE update brings Android 4.0.4 and Sense 4.1, dash of improved data for good measure

HTC EVO 4G LTE update brings latest Android and Sense 41, dash of improved 3G for good measure

Give your HTC EVO 4G LTE a quick update scan if you haven't lately. Sprint has started pushing out an upgrade that brings its flagship phone both to Android 4.0.4 and to Sense 4.1, putting the EVO's software on a par with the just-unveiled Desire X. Patching up doesn't bring a revolution in features -- you'll mostly notice the known option to change the multitasking button's functionality and hide the on-screen menu key. However, there's a lot of Sprint-specific fixes that make the update worthwhile, such as an LTE "scanning improvement" that some owners suggest is improving their overall cellular data quality. If you already have the update, let fellow readers know how well it's working for you in the comments.

[Thanks, Jason]

ZTE team up with Intel and announce the ZTE Grand X IN

Android Central

It only seems five minutes ago we had the ZTE Grand X released and already it is being superseded by another flagship device. The ZTE Grand X IN is powered by an Intel® Atom™ processor Z2460 with Intel® Hyper-Threading which should make the new handset more efficient in the power department whilst still delivering a fast and powerful experience. The majority of the specs look to be on-par with the original Grand X although the camera has had a boost and we now get an 8MP instead of the 5. The shell looks identical and from handling the Grand X I can say it is a pretty solid device for its price point.

Other features include a 4.3 inch TFT 16 million-color display, a 1650 mAh battery and HSPA+ 21Mbps. The device is planned for release in Europe during September and will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. There is no word on plans to get Jelly Bean on it so I wouldn't hold your breath for that one however when carriers announce pricing for the ZTE Grand X IN I expect them to be very competitive. The Grand X that launched here in the UK just last month is sitting just short of the £200 mark on pay as you go so fingers crossed the final figure for the IN will be in that ball park.

Catch the press release and full specs below:

Biologists create first predictive computational model of gene networks that control development of sea-urchin embryos

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? As an animal develops from an embryo, its cells take diverse paths, eventually forming different body parts -- muscles, bones, heart. In order for each cell to know what to do during development, it follows a genetic blueprint, which consists of complex webs of interacting genes called gene regulatory networks.

Biologists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have spent the last decade or so detailing how these gene networks control development in sea-urchin embryos. Now, for the first time, they have built a computational model of one of these networks.

This model, the scientists say, does a remarkably good job of calculating what these networks do to control the fates of different cells in the early stages of sea-urchin development -- confirming that the interactions among a few dozen genes suffice to tell an embryo how to start the development of different body parts in their respective spatial locations. The model is also a powerful tool for understanding gene regulatory networks in a way not previously possible, allowing scientists to better study the genetic bases of both development and evolution.

"We have never had the opportunity to explore the significance of these networks before," says Eric Davidson, the Norman Chandler Professor of Cell Biology at Caltech. "The results are amazing to us."

The researchers described their computer model in a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that appeared as an advance online publication on August 27.

The model encompasses the gene regulatory network that controls the first 30 hours of the development of endomesoderm cells, which eventually form the embryo's gut, skeleton, muscles, and immune system. This network -- so far the most extensively analyzed developmental gene regulatory network of any animal organism -- consists of about 50 regulatory genes that turn one another on and off.

To create the model, the researchers distilled everything they knew about the network into a series of logical statements that a computer could understand. "We translated all of our biological knowledge into very simple Boolean statements," explains Isabelle Peter, a senior research fellow and the first author of the paper. In other words, the researchers represented the network as a series of if-then statements that determine whether certain genes in different cells are on or off (i.e., if gene A is on, then genes B and C will turn off).

By computing the results of each sequence hour by hour, the model determines when and where in the embryo each gene is on and off. Comparing the computed results with experiments, the researchers found that the model reproduced the data almost exactly. "It works surprisingly well," Peter says.

Some details about the network may still be uncovered, the researchers say, but the fact that the model mirrors a real embryo so well shows that biologists have indeed identified almost all of the genes that are necessary to control these particular developmental processes. The model is accurate enough that the researchers can tweak specific parts -- for example, suppress a particular gene -- and get computed results that match those of previous experiments.

Allowing biologists to do these kinds of virtual experiments is precisely how computer models can be powerful tools, Peter says. Gene regulatory networks are so complex that it is almost impossible for a person to fully understand the role of each gene without the help of a computational model, which can reveal how the networks function in unprecedented detail.

Studying gene regulatory networks with models may also offer new insights into the evolutionary origins of species. By comparing the gene regulatory networks of different species, biologists can probe how they branched off from common ancestors at the genetic level.

So far, the researchers have only modeled one gene regulatory network, but their goal is to model the networks responsible for every part of a sea-urchin embryo, to build a model that covers not just the first 30 hours of a sea urchin's life but its entire embryonic development. Now that this modeling approach has been proven effective, Davidson says, creating a complete model is just a matter of time, effort, and resources.

The title of the PNAS paper is "Predictive computation of genomic logic processing functions in embryonic development." In addition to Peter and Davidson, the other author on the PNAS paper is Emmanuel Faure, a former Caltech postdoctoral scholar who is now at the ?cole Polytechnique in France. This work was supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Natural Health Community ? TOXINS IN THE HOME AFFECT ...

Toxins in the HOME affect Toxins in the body!

Have you ever thought about how many toxins are attacking us in our homes, chemicals emitting dangerous gases and more?? Did you know that one of the most toxic places is your own home? Chemicals are everywhere in the home and cause significant damage to health. And who are the most affected? In general, women and children who spend far more time in the home.

increased cancer rate in women

Recent studies show a greatly increased cancer rate in women who stay at home versus those who work! Invisible killers are pervasive, you most often can?t see them, smell them or taste them, but you are ingesting, drinking and inhaling them with every breath.

They are found in everyday products and escape during normal use and through wear and tear overtime. For example:

  • Cosmetics, shampoos and personal care products can contain synthetic musks. These substances can accumulate in our bodies and could disrupt hormone systems.
  • Your computer can contain fire-retardant brominated chemicals, which exhibit developmental toxicity and may mimic hormones produced by the thyroid gland.
  • PVC products such as flooring can contain organotin chemicals. They're used to stabilize the plastic but are toxic to the immune system.
  • Soft PVC, used in many products - such as shower curtains or soft plastic case for your mobile - contains phthalates, which can be toxic to reproduction.
  • Waterproof jackets and other rain-gear could ontain perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), chemicals, which are also used and released during the manufacture of non-stick coatings for pans and other cookware. These are now of increasing concern because of their links to hormone disruption and promotion of cancer.

With evidence growing that these types of chemicals could be storing up long-term problems for human health and the environment, it makes sense to reduce or, ideally, eliminate our exposure to them. How can we achieve it? Simple - By substituting hazardous chemicals wherever there are available alternatives.? Take the time to read the labels and purchase only environmentally friendly products.

CLEANSING THE BODY is one TOOL we can use

If someone came into your house, mixed you a cocktail of unknown chemicals - and offered you to drink it - would you take it?? You wouldn't want untested chemicals in your home, your drink, or your body. So what can we do about chemicals when they are already in our body from long time exposure?? CLEANSING THE BODY is one TOOL we can use.

A14-day Cleansing Program (84 Packets ? 336 Capsules), Stock No. 958-7 www.mynsp.com/KathyDeane??

A healthy body is host to a delicate balance of friendly microflora. For example, the mucous membranes throughout the body are lined with protective bacteria. If this protective layer of bacteria becomes compromised through various factors such as

poor diet, disease or use of certain medications, then the underlying body tissues are attacked by opportunistic organisms such as yeast and fungus. Excesses of yeast and fungus can compromise the immune, digestive and urinary systems.

100-year-old motorist backs into children outside Los Angeles school

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A 100-year-old motorist lost control of his automobile as he backed out of his driveway into a crowd of children and parents outside an elementary school in Los Angeles on Wednesday, injuring nine children and two adults, authorities said.

Four of the children initially were listed in critical condition, though most were upgraded after they arrived at the hospital, and none appeared to have suffered life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

The pedestrians were standing around a sidewalk vendor's cart when the car rolled up over the curb in front of Main Street Elementary School in south Los Angeles as classes were letting out at about 2:30 p.m. local time, police said.

The driver, who was detained for questioning and later released without being charged, told police his car experienced some kind of mechanical failure, Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Karen Rayner said.

"At this point, it doesn't appear as though there are going to be any charges filed, but it's an ongoing investigation," she said. "We'll definitely be looking at his competency to retain his driver's license."

His car also was impounded as evidence, she said.

Authorities did not release the motorist's name. But the driver gave his name to local television station ABC7 as Preston Carter and said he turns 101 next month. He also told the TV station that his brakes failed as he was backing up.

At least one of the nine children injured in the accident remained in critical but stable condition Wednesday night at County-University of Southern California Medical Center in Los Angeles, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Why Does Pregnancy Last 9 Months?

How much longer could Junior really stay in there?

How much longer could Junior really stay in there?

Babies are lovely but altogether helpless creatures.

Wouldn't it be better if tiny humans were born able to walk, like horses, or generally were readier for the rigors of the world, like, say, chimps?

Among primates, human have the least developed brains at birth, at least when compared to adult human brains. If humans were born as far along on cognitive and neurological scales as rough and ready chimps are, though, human pregnancy would have to last at least twice as long. Eighteen months in the womb, anyone?

The prevailing explanation for why pregnancy doesn't last that long boils down to something called the "obstetrical dilemma." Humans walk upright. And the size and shape of our pelvises are constrained by our bipedal way of getting around in the world. If they got much bigger, mothers wouldn't walk as well. So babies' brains could only get so big and still fit through the birth canal, the conventional wisdom holds.

Now researchers at the University of Rhode Island, Harvard and the University of California, Berkeley, are questioning whether the theory is right. Instead of mechanical limits dictating how big a baby's head can get, they propose it's really about how much energy Mom can spare for the developing fetus.

?

"Mothers gestate a baby as long as they can metabolically," Holly Dunsworth, an assistant professor of anthropology at University of Rhode Island, tells Shots. She's the lead author of a paper advancing the metabolic hypothesis, an alternative explanation that's laid out in a paper published online by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

She and her colleagues concluded that a human baby born at a chimp's level of development would require the average human birth canal to be about 3 centimeters bigger, an increase of a little more than an inch in diameter.

That's feasible, the researchers say. "We show that's within the range of variation now," Dunsworth says. "Those people with wider birth canals aren't walking any worse."

So what is the limiting factor? Apparently, it's how much energy Mom can divert from her own metabolism to the growth and maintenance of a fetus, the researchers say. We humans are able to crank up our metabolism to about twice its normal level and sustain that turbo mode for quite a while.

In fact, pregnant women's metabolism runs at twice the normal level by about the sixth month. By nine months, as the fetus's energy needs increase, the rate is pushing close to 2.1 times normal. And that's pretty much the limit. "Extending gestation even by a month would likely require metabolic investment beyond the mother's capacity," the researchers write.

What happens instead? Mom gives birth, and baby's growth rate slows (compared to its fetal self). Everybody's happy, though it must be said that there's a lot of coddling and many sleepless nights as the needy baby grows into a toddler.

One paper isn't likely to shove the obstetrical dilemma off the scientific stage overnight. But Dunsworth is confident the metabolic argument will hold up.

"Part of the older story is that the birth canal can't get any bigger," she says. "We've shown there's a much better explanation, and we've shown how hard it is to support the old explanation."

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Low ...

One must have the understanding wanted to sell and buy stocks for a good profit. Have you always wanted to earn income on the exchange and never actually find the bravery to do so? It also has a tendency to plunge into reputedly complicated behaviours occasionally.

It also takes real courage, smarts, and the will to take a position in the best stock dealing system to make your investments pay-off. There are plenty of online techniques that can be utilised to raise your data and experience about the market. There are online coaching courses, reading material, and even programs which may let you practice your investment talents.

Trading software enables you to just about invest and practice everything you have learned. When you select an internet agent, ensure they have these decisions open to you. Look for a full refund guarantee because this is both an indication of good faith from the publisher and proof that they are pushing a credible programme, but also at the exact same time you can test the programme first hand before completely committing to it. It?s simple enough to do because you do not have to invest any cash, instead you can doublecheck the performances of the picks which it generates for you in the market to discover how well they do so you can know irrespective of if you should be making an investment in its next string of picks. This is effective as the market moves forward in patterns which repeat themselves often each 7 years normally. This may be seen and shown by the proven fact that we are going out of and into recessions constantly whether or not it's smaller or larger one or more times ten years. Some automated securities trading systems in particular target penny shares when hunting for trading prospects. This is effective because penny shares are the least expensive, most changeable and wildly oscillating investments to be found in the market as it is way easier to persuade their position and price with less trading activity. For instance, the 1st automated share trading system pick which was aimed towards penny shares particularly which I invested in was costed at $.18 a share.

ACE, workhorse of NASA's heliophysics fleet, is 15

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? The Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) is Earth's vanguard. Orbiting around a point 900,000 miles away between Earth and our sun, this satellite is ever vigilant, recording the combination of radiation -- from the sun, from the solar system, from the galaxy -- that streams by. None of this radiation can harm humans on Earth, but the biggest bursts of particles from the sun can flow into near-Earth space causing a dynamic space weather system that can damage satellites and interfere with radio communication transmissions and navigation systems.

When one of these bursts of solar material -- known as a coronal mass ejection or CME -- erupts from the sun toward Earth and passes ACE, the instruments onboard the spacecraft observe the increase in particles and automatically transmit this information to publicly available websites within five minutes. This offers a crucial advance warning of some 20 to 60 minutes to those who need to protect their technology from the effects of space weather, such as satellite operators, airplane pilots and utility companies.

ACE is, therefore, a crucial component of NASA's fleet, but its job as sentinel is, in fact, just a small piece of what ACE has accomplished since it launched on August 25, 1997. In its first 15 years, the spacecraft has helped determine the composition of the vast sea of flowing particles surrounding Earth. ACE also serves as a sentinel that helps measure the input -- the solar wind -- that drives the dynamics of the magnetosphere.

"We knew ACE would help with space weather monitoring, but fundamentally, it's a science mission," says Eric Christian, the deputy project scientist for ACE at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "It's called a 'composition' explorer, because one of its main goals was to identify and study all the components of space radiation."

To tease out the various components of these space particles, ACE's nine instruments were designed to observe the wide range of particles in space, differentiating between various elements, energies and charges. ACE had two jobs: figure out where different kinds of particles originated and how they got an extra kick of speed, since a large number of the individual particles in space are traveling faster than scientists would expect based solely on the temperature of the material, suggesting that additional acceleration processes must be at work.

Based on ACE data over its first 15 years, we now have a much better understanding of the zoo of space particles and what causes their motion. The slowest particles with the lowest energy come from the solar wind, traveling at speeds of about 200 to 500 miles per second. Much quieter and less explosive than CME's, the solar wind nonetheless displays a complex and dynamic flow. For example, as high speed solar winds course off the sun, they can over take slower winds, and create shock waves to form giant, spinning eddies known as co-rotating interaction regions (CIRs) and these CIRs are an important component in accelerating particles.

Higher energy particles, known as solar energetic particles or SEPs, come from the sun, driven by fast CMEs and solar flares. These solar eruptions create what's called interplanetary shocks -- much like a bow shock from a plane -- that force the particles ever faster through space. These shocks can travel long distances, continuing to occur even as they pass by ACE, allowing scientists to study the acceleration processes in situ.

Particles also fly past ACE from the outer edges of the solar system and even from interstellar space. "Pickup" ions are believed to be created when neutral atoms from the galaxy collide with solar ultraviolet light or the solar wind to make charged particles. ACE cannot see the neutral atoms, per se, but can observe the pickup ions they create. Finally, at very high energies are the galactic cosmic rays, thought to be accelerated by shock waves from supernova explosions in our galaxy.

All of this information about different types of particles and what causes their acceleration contributes to our understanding of the giant space weather system of material and magnetic energy that surround the sun, Earth and the planets. By improving our understanding of that system, scientists can make even better use of the constant updates ACE provides about what solar energy is headed our way.

ACE science has also gone beyond the heliosphere. By observing galactic cosmic rays, the spacecraft has also advanced astrophysics understanding of how elements are created in supernovae. It is known that the intense heat from a supernovae -- the giant explosion at the end of a star's life -- fuses smaller elements into larger ones. The makeup of cosmic rays suggest that most of them come from the concentrations of massive stars in certain areas, galactic superbubbles, which are regions where many supernovae explode within a few million years. Recent observations of a cocoon of freshly accelerated cosmic rays in the Cygnus superbubble by the Fermi gamma-ray observatory support this theory.

Although there has been some degradation in ACE's instruments, fuel and power are sufficient to keep it functioning for another decade. Not only will this help keep ACE in place to take space-weather measurements, but it also lays the groundwork for continued science on how the sun's energy and the solar wind affect our near-Earth space.

As missions such as NASA's Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP), due to launch at the end of August 2012, the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission (MMS) due to launch in 2014, and the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS), launched in 2007, seek to understand how Earth's magnetosphere responds to incoming energy, it is ACE, lying outside the magnetosphere and facing the sun, which can describe what input from the sun caused those changes.

US military says WikiLeaks suspect broke rules before

US military lawyers said Wednesday that Bradley Manning, the soldier accused of passing a trove of secret documents to WikiLeaks, had breached security before and knew he was breaking the law.

A pre-trial hearing for Manning, 24, who could be jailed for life if he is convicted of committing the biggest intelligence breach in American history, heard that he made an unauthorized YouTube video for his family in 2008.

He used the terms "classified" and "top secret" in that video but he was caught and received corrective training for breaking military rules, said prosecutors, who want to put the video before jurors at Manning's trial.

Manning's punishment for the YouTube video included having to present a power point presentation in which he explained what amounted to classified information and what would constitute a security breach.

The military says the information proves that Manning was fully aware of the consequences when he released a huge cache of diplomatic cables and military logs to WikiLeaks. His defense has denied the soldier knowingly aided the enemy.

Manning is alleged to have provided WikiLeaks with the haul of documents several months before he was eventually tracked down and arrested in 2010 while serving in Iraq.

"The intent behind the two acts is sufficiently similar -- wilful and was damaging to the interests of the United States," said Captain Angel Overgaard at the pre-trial hearing taking place at a military base in Maryland.

The publishing by WikiLeaks of the official documents triggered a diplomatic firestorm that hugely embarrassed American officials who were left to deal with the fallout and the disclosures also rankled key US allies.

Manning's defense argued at the hearing that making the YouTube video and the power point slides available to the jury would prejudice the former intelligence analyst's right to a fair trial.

But the military says the specific punishment Manning received shows that he could have been "aiding the enemy" and gives an insight into his character before the subsequent leak of classified documents to WikiLeaks.

Manning, who is attending this week's hearing, has not yet entered a plea in the case and his trial is penciled in to start in February -- five months later than originally planned.

Facebook Camera update 11 adds notifications, lets you pick and choose albums

The Facebook Camera just scored a nice little update in the iTunes app store. Now the filter-equipped shooter will let you pick and choose which folders to upload your pics to -- something that probably should have been included in version one. It also brings notifications to the party, letting you keep track of when friends comment, tag or like a photo. It's actually not bad for a measly .1 update.

Adverse effects of mining industry provoke hard questions for medical humanitarian organizations

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Increasingly humanitarian organizations will find themselves responding to health emergencies provoked by the adverse effects of mining and other extractive industries, setting up a potential clash to do with the core principles and values at the heart of humanitarian medicine, writes Philippe Calain from the humanitarian medical organization, M?decins Sans Fronti?res (MSF), in this week's PLoS Medicine.

"A pragmatic approach of engagement with the corporate sector for the delivery of aid, or an implicit support to mainstream development agendas could compromise the legitimacy of humanitarian medicine," argues Calain. He continues, "A principled understanding of humanitarian medicine entails selfless moral commitments that are incompatible with the for-profit objectives of corporate industries."

Drawing on MSF's experience responding to the "worst lead poisoning epidemic in modern history" resulting from artisanal gold mining in Nigeria's Zamfara state, Calain explores the pitfalls, difficult alliances, and challenges medical humanitarian organizations must navigate in confronting the dire health consequences resulting from extractive industries, whether informal, illegal, or sanctioned.

He argues that, in developing countries, extractive industries (including ore mineral mining and oil extraction) have far reaching consequences on health through environmental pollution, communicable diseases, violence, destitution, and compromised food security. While humanitarian organisations might be called to intervene in areas occupied by the extractive sector, Calain argues that oil and mineral exploitation reveals a fundamental clash of values between humanitarianism, the for-profit sector, and privatised global philanthropy.

Operating in this relatively new terrain for medical humanitarian organizations -- outside the traditional humanitarian response to armed conflict, epidemics, and natural disasters -- requires a deeper examination of which types of compromises and alliances are acceptable. Responding to these kinds of emergencies, warns Calain, cannot be reduced to the development of medical and technical expertise alone.

"While advocacy and expansion of their operational expertise are obvious paths for non-governmental organizations, a more complex and ideologically loaded question to solve is about what type of relationships humanitarian organisations should entertain with the corporate sector," writes Calain. "Specific medical humanitarian organisations can respond to these challenges in different ways, based on their position between pragmatic or principled approaches, and their willingness to develop new technical capacities."

According to Calain, many mainstream medical humanitarian organisations would rather opt for no engagement with the natural resource extraction sector due to questions of values and conflicts of interest.

He concludes: "the Zamfara outbreak has called attention to a novel agenda for medical humanitarian organisations, including technical preparedness for environmental disasters, dialogue with international environmental organisations, and a better understanding of the exact role of resources extraction in perpetuating humanitarian crises."

LONDON (AP) ? The Olympics have Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern games. The Paralympics have Sir Ludwig Guttmann.

Guttmann, a Jewish neurosurgeon who fled Nazi Germany, pioneered athletic competition as therapy for patients with spinal injuries and organized an archery competition for 16 patients at Britain's Stoke Mandeville hospital in 1948. From this humble start have come the Paralympic Games, which this week will bring more than 4,000 athletes from around the world to London.

"The Guttmann story is massive," said Olympic historian Martin Polley. "He was the one who linked rehab to competitive sport."

This month has been Guttmann's moment, what with a BBC film about his life, "The Best of Men," an exhibition at the Jewish Museum in London and his daughter, Eve Loeffler, being named mayor of the athletes village ? a sort of ambassador in chief who welcomes the participants for games that start Wednesday and end Sept. 9.

It follows a resurgence of interest in Guttmann, who escaped in the late 1930s and settled in Britain, where his research on treating spinal patients drew the attention of the government. Guttmann began working with injured soldiers at Stoke Mandeville hospital, just north of London, during World War II ? a time when suffering a spinal injury was considered a death sentence. Patients were discouraged from moving, leading to secondary infections from bed sores or from pneumonia.

Known for an authoritarian streak and his stubborn insistence on changing the status quo, Guttmann swept into the hospital and took patients off sedation, which had been administered to make them comfortable. But Guttmann was having none of that. No one was going to be comfortable.

"One patient told me 'I'm waiting for God almighty to take me up," the Times of London reported Guttmann as saying at a conference in 1962. "I told him 'While you are waiting, you can do some work'."

He made the patients sit up and work muscles. Seeking to keep them motivated, he hit upon competition as a way to make them work harder. He tried wheelchair field hockey, but when that became too violent, he got the patients involved in wheelchair basketball, Loeffler said.

It was tough and demanding, but grateful patients nicknamed him "Poppa." They were still paralyzed. But many lived ? and carried out Guttmann's wish that they become taxpayers.

Loeffler said her father was marked by his past. Many of his relatives perished in Auschwitz. He was driven, intent to give back to the country that had given his family refuge.

"I think that's another thing that made him work so hard," she said. "He was Hitler's gift to this country in a way, and he was determined to be a good British citizen."

On the same day that London opened its 1948 Olympics, Guttmann organized a competition for wheelchair athletes, which he called the Stoke Mandeville Games. They involved 16 patients taking part in archery. From those humble origins, the Paralympics have grown into a festival of sport involving 4,200 athletes from 166 teams. Though smaller than the Olympics ? which had more than twice the number of athletes ? London's event represents the largest field ever for the games.

The London event ? the first to have come as a result of a joint bid from the host city ? have also benefited from greater integration with the Olympics, particularly in terms of marketing and organization. London essentially connected the rings to the Agitos, the Paralympic symbol of three circling arcs ? a move that helped also spread the fairy dust of attention that the Olympics receive to the Paralympics as well. Queen Elizabeth II agreed to open the event, a reflection of their importance to the country.

Some 2.3 million tickets have been sold, the most ever, many to Britons new to Paralympic sport but who wanted to get an opportunity to see the glittering new stadiums and experience the excitement of first class sporting competition.

Britain's team is also strong. They were second in the Paralympic table at Beijing with 102 total medals, including 42 gold. The hometown crowd wants to see their athletes ? and of course wants to see them win.

Loeffler believes her father's vision has come to pass. And when she wanders the village, people recognize her, like Canadian athlete Jessica Vliegenthart, who saw Loeffler having her photograph taken in a smart navy jacket with its massive circular gold badge.

"Aren't you the daughter of ..." Vliegenthart asked, as two wheelchair basketball athletes drew their wheels in.

Loeffler nodded, her pride clear. Her father dreamed of an "Olympic Games for disabled men and women," and now a whole new generation is learning about him.

"Who but he could have imagined that it would have happened," she said. "I don't think anybody else could."

Britain embraced Guttmann, giving him a knighthood in 1966 and making him a fellow of the Royal Society ? honors of which he was extremely proud. Though he died in 1980, he lived long enough to see the Paralympics grow. The first full scale games took place in Rome in 1960, and souvenirs from the 1964 Tokyo Paralympics are part of the collection on display at the Jewish Museum.

"I just couldn't be more proud of him," Loeffler said. "I just hope he's up there watching it all."
