Protest: Rivers crisis splits civil society - Vanguard

BY EGUFE YAFUGBORHI

? as S?South PDP c?ttee condemns crisis
PORT HARCOURT?SOME rights groups in Rivers State have said that the crisis rocking Peoples? Democratic Party, PDP, in the state was the result of selfish politics of all the parties involved.

They, therefore, dissociated themselves from today?s planned mass rally in Port Harcourt by civil society organisations calling for the removal of the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mbu, over the crisis.

In a statement, yesterday, the organisations noted that the protest was needless because it would not benefit the ordinary Rivers people, but rather tends to glorify the factions of the party, none of which they perceive as being involved in the crisis for public good.

The civil organisations include Rivers chapters of Civil Liberties Organistion, CLO; Social Action, Oil Watch Africa; Centre for Environment and Human Rights and Development, CEHRD, Students Environmental Assembly and Social Workers Movement, among others.

The statement said: ?The political actors fighting among themselves, no matter the camp they belong, have never had the interest of the toiling masses at heart.

?They oppress the masses whenever they deem it profitable for their class interests and fight themselves when their fractional interest clashes.?

S?South PDP c?ttee condemns crisis

South-South Zonal Working Committee, ZWC, of Peoples? Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, called on the warring factions in the rivers crisis to put the interest of state above other considerations.

A statement at the end of its meeting in Asaba, Delta State, condemned the breakdown of law and order perpetrated by the state lawmakers.

Dr. Steven Oru, PDP South-South Chairman said no effort would be spared in the resolution of the crisis rocking Rivers House of Assembly, adding that the zonal committee would soon embark on consultation with stakeholders for the restoration of peace in Rivers.

Oru said the stakeholders would visits top PDP functionaries from the zone and PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Chief Edwin Clark, among others.

It passed a vote of confidence on President Goodluck Jonathan for his transformation agenda, stabilisation of the national economy, enhanced security of lives and property.

Champion Blackhawks announce 3-year contract extension for coach Joel Quenneville

CHICAGO ? Stan Bowman wanted to keep Joel Quenneville in Chicago, and the coach had no desire to leave.

After two Stanley Cup titles in four seasons, this was a no-brainer.

The Blackhawks announced a three-year contract extension for Quenneville on Friday, kicking off their sixth annual fan convention with a crowd-pleasing move.

"There's no one we'd want coaching this team more than Joel," said Bowman, who was promoted to general manager about nine months after Quenneville was hired in 2008. "He's done a fantastic job over the years. I think the record speaks for itself."

The 54-year-old Quenneville is 222-106 in five seasons in Chicago. He led the Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup in 2010, ending a 49-year drought, and then coached them to another title this year.

With captain Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and several other players standing off to the side, Quenneville said he was privileged to coach the best group in the league.

"I know we don't get to see all the other teams, but as far as the character, the quality, the experience, the leadership, we have all the intangibles that can make a team successful," he said.

Quenneville's deal was set to expire next year, but it now runs through the 2016-17 season. The announcement was no surprise, since Bowman had said since the end of the season that an extension was a priority and the coach talked all along about how much he enjoyed being part of the organization.

It's likely the last major offseason move for the Blackhawks, who return largely intact as they try to become the first team to win consecutive NHL titles since the Detroit Red Wings in 1997 and 1998.

"It's a great start to the weekend with the Hawks announcing the contract for Q," Toews said. "It's much deserved. I mean he's done a lot of great things for his team since he's been here in Chicago."

This is Quenneville's third stop as a head coach in the NHL. The former defenseman is 660-389-77 in 16 seasons with St. Louis, Colorado and Chicago. He won the Jack Adams Award, which is given to the head coach who has contributed most to his team's success, in 2000 with the Blues and was a nominee for the award again this year.

Michael Beller: Fantasy baseball Waiver Wire -- Chris Archer finding his stride

Chris Archer's ERA has dropped to 2.76, and he's only allowed one earned run in his last three games.

J. Meric/Getty Images

Whenever you consider a pitcher over a small sample size, you have to look at the teams he has faced. Sure, he may have posted some gaudy numbers during the stretch, but the right string of opponents can make a lot of pitchers look like Cy Young. That's not a reason to completely avoid a guy, but it is one of the many factors you have to think about when deciding whether or not to make a move. And with that, let's talk about Chris Archer.

MACK: Turn around your fantasy fortunes with these second-half stars

The Rays promoted Archer (available in 75 percent of Yahoo leagues, 32 percent of CBS leagues, and 48 percent of ESPN leagues) back in June and placed him in the rotation. It took him awhile to find his stride, as he allowed five runs to the Indians in his first start and went for fewer than five innings in three of his first four outings.

That looks like nothing more than growing pains now, though. Recently, he's appeared every bit the ace the Rays thought he was when they dealt Matt Garza to the Cubs for a package Archer headlined. He threw his third consecutive strong outing Sunday, holding the Blue Jays to one run on five hits in seven innings. He only struck out one batter and walked four, and while walks have been an issue for him, he still deserves to be owned in most mixed leagues. In his last three starts, he has allowed one run in 22 innings. The first two starts in the hot streak were against the Twins and Astros, but the fact remains that he shut down both teams. Given his pedigree and the results we've seen from him, he can be a valuable commodity for fantasy owners the rest of the year.

And now, for the rest of this week's waiver wire goodness:

? 1B Justin Smoak, Seattle Mariners (Yahoo: 94 percent, CBS: 65 percent, ESPN: 86 percent) -- A darling post-hyper for the past few seasons, Smoak has been on a tear of late, hitting .353/.441/.647 with three homers in July. While the counting stats light up the fantasy scoreboard, the strides he's made with his plate discipline have been the most encouraging this year. For the first time in his major league career, Smoak isn't a rate killer. His walk rate is up to 13.3 percent, and his strikeout rate is a manageable 21.9 percent, helping him to a .268/.371/.435 slash line in 278 plate appearances. We've seen Smoak get hot and then burn out, but there's reason to believe he has staying power this year thanks to his improved patience. He also has a career-best 24.2-percent line-drive rate. He's worth a shot in deep mixed leagues.

? 2B/3B/OF Kelly Johnson, Tampa Bay Rays (63, 40, 65) -- Speaking of guys who run hot and cold, Johnson is on another burner. He got off to a great start this year, and really took off in May, but his production predictably took a drop. He's back on the upswing, though, and after a 3-for-4 with a homer Sunday, he's hitting .375/.442/.725 with four homers in July. We've seen this story play out once this year, already. He hit .330/.374/.648 in May and .116/.225/.174 in June. He's a guy worth riding while he's hot, but understand that the ride will end eventually. If you need help at second, third or outfield right now, Johnson is worth adding, no matter your league format.

? OF Marlon Byrd, New York Mets (69, 52, 18) -- It has been a sad year in Flushing, the kind of season where feel-good stories get as much play as possible. So it's surprising that the resuscitation of Byrd's career has made little noise outside of New York. The 35-year-old outfielder hit his 17th homer of the season Sunday in a win over the Phillies. He dealt with injuries for much of 2012, and limped his way to a .210/.243/.245 slash. Through 318 plate appearances this year, he's hitting .277/.327/.519. His power surge is hard to explain, as this is just the second time in his career he has hit more than 12 homers in a season. Despite that, he's still worth going after if you're looking for power or a change in the outfield.

? RP Pedro Strop, Chicago Cubs (97, 96, 99) -- Cubs Manager Dale Sveum said over the weekend that Strop would likely take over as the closer in the event of a Kevin Gregg trade. If you're speculating for saves that makes Strop a great add right now. Gregg has been effective enough that teams in need of bullpen help would be able to hold their noses and make a deal, especially since the Cubs probably won't be asking for much in return. Strop, who was dealt to the Cubs as part of the deal that sent Scott Feldman to the Orioles, hasn't allowed a run in eight appearances with his new team. He has eight strikeouts and two walks in 6.2 innings as a Cub.

The droppables

? SS Derek Jeter, New York Yankees -- Well that was fun while it lasted, huh? Jeter played in one game after his much-awaited return from the DL, but strained his quad and had to go back on the shelf. Now the Yankees are saying he likely won't be able to return when first available at the end of this week. At this point, you can't count on him contributing at all in fantasy leagues this year.

? OF Andre Ethier, Los Angeles Dodgers -- With the Dodgers fully healthy for the first time all year, Ethier looks like the odd man out. The team is playing its best baseball of the year, taking over first place on Sunday, and Don Mattingly won't be able to bench Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig or Carl Crawford. With this team's luck, there's always the chance of another injury, but Ethier just isn't worth owning now.

KTVU | Fake Pilot Names | Copyright | Videos - Legal Insurrection

Posted by Mandy Nagy ?? Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 5:00pm

This is turning out to be a case of one TV station that just seems determined to perpetuate the Streisand Effect.

KTVU, which was recently duped into reading off the very obviously fake names of several purported pilots from Asiana Flight 214, has apparently been trying to scrub its embarrassing blunder from the internet.

Matthew Keys (yeah, that Matthew Keys) has the scoop:

The station has started filing copyright infringement notices with YouTube ordering the removal of several videos depicting KTVU?s embarrassing misidentification of four pilots aboard Asiana Airlines Flight 214, which crashed at San Francisco International Airport earlier in the month.

Two videos uploaded by the account MatthewKeysLive for use on The Desk and elsewhere were removed by YouTube after copyright infringement notices were submitted by KTVU in an apparent attempt to scrub the internet of the gaffe. Several videos that also showed KTVU?s error and subsequent apology were removed on other YouTube accounts.

Indeed, when I checked the posts that I?ve done on this story, the videos have been disabled.

But as Keys points out, they?re still available through other YouTube accounts.? He also says his blog has submitted counter-notifications with YouTube citing copyright law?s fair use provision.? Given that the videos were used by numerous blogs and news outlets for the purpose of reporting it as news (as well as comment and criticism), I agree, I would think there?s an argument to be made for fair use.? I?ll let the lawyers in the peanut gallery weigh in on that one.

Who knows, though ? Asiana Airlines did ultimately reverse an earlier decision to sue the TV station over the report.? Maybe that factors into why KTVU is now trying to have the videos memory-holed.

Regardless of KTVU?s reasons, it seems to me this will only draw more attention to the matter, since everyone knows, you never really delete something from every corner of the interwebz.

(AP) ? Japanese broadcasters projected that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling coalition won a majority of seats in the upper house of parliament in elections Sunday, giving it control of both chambers for the first time in six years.

The win is seen as an endorsement of Abe's economic program, which has helped spark a tentative recovery, and gives him a legislative mandate to pursue difficult economic reforms that he has promised to help sustain growth in the long run.

The victory in the elections, where half the seats in the 242-member upper house were up for grabs, offers hawkish Abe more leeway to advance nationalistic goals that could further strain testy relations with China and South Korea.

It is a vindication for Abe, who lost upper house elections in 2007 during his previous stint as prime minister.

Based on exit polls, public broadcaster NHK predicted that Abe's Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner, New Komeito, won a combined 71 seats, giving them a total of 130 seats in the chamber, more than the 122 needed for a majority.

The Liberal Democrats were projected to take at least 61 seats, which together with the 50 they held before the vote would give them 111, short of an outright majority.

Official results weren't expected until early Monday.

Voter turnout was reported to be low, suggesting a lack of public enthusiasm.

Abe says his top priority is to sustain the economic recovery that, helped along by aggressive monetary and fiscal stimuli since he took office in late December, has lifted share prices, boosted business confidence and helped exporters by weakening the yen.

Japan's long-term growth will depend on sweeping changes to boost competitiveness and help cope with Japan's rapidly graying population and soaring national debt. Such reforms, long overdue, are bound to prove difficult even with control of both chambers of the parliament.

The LDP's vice president, Masahiko Komura, welcomed the early projections.

"Obviously, the results so far shows that voters want a stable government," Komura said in a live TV interview with NHK.

"We will continue to push Abenomics steadily in order to live up to their expectations," he said.

The gain in parliamentary strength will help relieve the gridlock of past years, but is no guarantee of smooth sailing for the ruling bloc.

Abe faces a decision this fall on whether to follow through on raising the sales tax next April from 5 percent to 8 percent, a move needed to shore up Japan's public finances, but one that many worry will derail the recovery.

After more than two decades of economic doldrums, the Japanese public has grown weary of political bickering and ineffectual leadership. Bereft of an effective, united political opposition, it has opted for the perceived safety of the Liberal Democrats, who have ruled Japan for most of the past seven decades.

"I want them to carry on doing their best as the economy seems to be picking up," Naohisa Hayashi, a 35-year-old man who runs his own business, said after casting his ballot at a downtown Tokyo polling station.

The Liberal Democrats' "Recover Japan" platform calls a strong economy, strategic diplomacy and unshakable national security under the Japan-U.S. alliance, which allows for 50,000 American troops to be stationed in Japan.

The party also favors revising the country's pacifist constitution, drafted by the United States after World War II, to give Japan's military a larger role ? a message that alarms the Chinese government but resonates with some Japanese voters troubled by territorial disputes with China and South Korea and widespread distrust of an increasingly assertive Beijing.

Abe has upset both neighbors by saying he hopes to revise a 1995 apology by Japan for its wartime aggression and questioning the extent to which Korean, Chinese and other Asian women were forced to provide sex for Japanese soldiers before and during World War II.

Revising the constitution would require two-thirds approval by both houses of parliament and a national referendum. Polls show the public is less interested in such matters than in reviving the economy and rebuilding areas of northeastern Japan devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Very little progress has been made on reconstruction 2 1/2 years after the disaster, or on cleaning up from the ensuing nuclear crisis at the crippled Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant that has most of Japan's atomic reactors still closed for safety checks.

Despite considerable public opposition to nuclear power in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima disaster, many voters appear to be willing to support the pro-nuclear LDP because they are attaching a higher priority to economic and security issues.

NCAA rejects claims in concussion lawsuit

CHICAGO (AP) ? The NCAA says the safety of its student athletes is among its core principles.

The college sports association responded to a lawsuit that challenges its handling of head injuries. Attorneys asked a federal judge Friday to let them expand the lawsuit nationwide to include thousands of plaintiffs.

NCAA spokeswoman Stacey Osburn says the association "has been at the forefront of safety issues."

She says it has addressed the issue of head injuries through a combination of playing rules, equipment requirements and medical practices.

Osburn said Saturday the NCAA does not believe the legal action is appropriate.

The motion seeking class-action status was filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, where the original lawsuit was filed in 2011 on behalf of former Eastern Illinois football player Adrian Arrington and several others.
