Knights inch closer to record | Local Hockey | Sports | The London ...

PLYMOUTH?-?

The London Knights cleared a major hurdle on their way to a potential history-making winning streak.

The Knights defeated the Plymouth Whalers 4-2 Saturday in Plymouth to run their winning streak to 23 games, the second longest in Ontario Hockey League history, in front of 3,657.

The Knights are chasing the Kitchener Rangers' OHL mark of 25 games set in 1983-84 and the 1973 Sorel Epeviers. Sorel is now the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. The 25 wins in succession is also a Canadian Hockey League record.

Those records were set before there was overtime and shootouts in the leagues. If a game ended in regulation time in a tie, it remained a tie.

The Knights have won five games in either overtime or shootouts during their streak.

The Hull Olympiques have the second longest streak in CHL history at 24 done during the 1995-96 season.

Despite being only two games from tying the record, most everyone on the Knights claims they aren?t really thinking about it.

?I don?t talk about. The kids play one game at a time. The old clich?,? said Knights? coach Dale Hunter.

?We aren?t talking overly about it but really there?s not much mention of it,? said Ryan Rupert.

?I just go out and have some fun. You can?t worry about the streak. You just take it one game at a time,? said goaltender Jake Patterson.

And so it goes. Another win, another solid effort in a difficult building to play and another response to pressure that continues to build with the streak and the attention growing.

This night it was the Ruperts who turned the game around. Matt caught a puck in the mouth but still managed to score a goal while Ryan had a goal and an assist. After a tough beginning to the year Ryan is finding the points finally starting to come.

?Starting last week I had a couple of points, that was the turnaround, I think,? Ryan said. ?Now I find that I?m getting some points and producing, so maybe this is the turnaround that I need.?

The Knights began their streak Nov. 2 with a 4-3 win over Belleville Bulls at home. Their last loss was the night before in Windsor when they dropped a 6-3 contest to the Spitfires.

Going into Plymouth is by no means an easy task. The Whalers play a tough, physical game in a smaller rink.

But the team keeps getting all-out efforts from anyone and everyone wearing the Knights? jersey.

?I can?t even tell you how hard they are working,? Patterson said. ?It?s making my job real easy. Their work ethic is incredible. Keeping the shots to the outside for me, it?s making my job easy.?

Patterson was good on his own. He made the big saves when he needed to make them.

Forward Kyle Platzer went back to play on the blueline and he finished a plus-three.

It was a tight game early with good hitting, skating and goaltending and it didn?t look as if anyone would score but this is junior hockey and things change quickly.

It changed drastically in the final 10 minutes of the second period. Tom Wilson sent the packed Compuware Arena crowd into a frenzy when he gave the Whalers a 1-0 lead at 11:46 of the second period.

But the announcer was still announcing the goal when Knights? Matt Rupert tied it up 20 seconds later. Less than two minutes later Max Domi gave the Knights a 2-1 lead and with just over a minute left in the second, Ryan Rupert scored to make it 3-1.

The Knights took control just that quickly and with starter Jake Patterson playing well, it was going to be tough for the Whalers to score that many to get back in the game.

Brett Welychka made it 4-1 in the third period.

But the Whalers weren?t ready to give it up. They pulled starter Matt Mahalak with more than two minutes to go and cut the lead to 4-2. Then Josh Anderson took a penalty. With 33 seconds left in the game, Garrett Meurs was awarded a penalty shot. If the Whalers scored it would have been 4-3 with a power play.

But Patterson gave Meurs nothing and he couldn?t get a shot off. Win 23 was secure.

?Each game you don?t know who is going to step up,? Ryan Rupert said. ?Last night it was (Welychka.) Tonight it was our line. We got a lot of confidence in that room.?

The Knights now look to tie the record with Sarnia Sting as the opposition. They play New Year?s Eve Day in Sarnia and then the potential record-tying game would be New Year?s Day in London.

New Year's Eve Drinking: Expert Advice on How to Avoid a ...

New Year's Eve Drinking: Expert Advice on How to Avoid a Hangover.

CHICAGO, Sunday, December 30, 2012. What are you doing New Year's Eve? If it involves drinking, you may want to plan ahead to avoid that dreaded "hangover."? Whether you splurge at a $500 per person all inclusive NYE party or stay at home and imbibe with friends and family (or alone)--with a little drinking smarts, you can avoid those morning after regrets.

With New Year's Eve, the biggest drinking night of the year, only hours away I will share with you the expert advice of Bon Appetit's drinking editor, Andrew Knowlton. Yes, Knowlton, Bon Appetit's restaurant and drink editor, really does get paid to drink on the job...so that makes him a pro. Follow his drinking tips and, no matter, if? you toast in 2013 with Dom Perignon, hit the mark with Makers, or go for the less pricey Skol vodka and the big jug of Carl Rossi Reserve, you can welcome in the New Year and still feel good in the morning.

Knowlton, who's been with Bon Appetit for nearly a dozen years, shared his "five secrets to avoid a hangover" with me last September, when I talked with him at Chicago Gourmet 2012--the popular drinking and eating bash held every summer in Millennium Park. So without further adieu, I will pass along his advice to all for a Happy and Headache Free New Year's Day 2013.

1. Start with a glass of white wine.

2. Next drink light colored spirits.? Knowlton likes gin but suggests "vodka with bitters" for those who are not fans of gin. Whatever spirit you choose, drink it straight, on the rocks or with water...not with sweet sodas or mixes.

3. As the evening continues, switch to brown spirits (scotch, rum, whiskey...pick one).? Knowlton's personal choice is bourbon--on the rocks, straight or with water--again nothing sweet.

4. Save the red wines for last.

5. Always drink slowly and eat along the way.

Former President Bush remains hospitalized

The Associated Press

Posted on December 29, 2012 at 1:25 PM

Updated today at 3:10 PM

HOUSTON (AP) -- Former President George H.W. Bush remains in intensive care in a Houston hospital recovering from a fever that arose after a long battle with bronchitis.

Family spokesman Jim McGrath said Saturday he would release a statement if there was anything to report, but wasn?t sure there would be.

McGrath said Friday that the 88-year-old Bush?s condition continued to improve since moving into intensive care at Methodist Hospital on Sunday. Later Friday, McGrath said that updates on the president would come on an ?as-warranted? basis.

Bush was hospitalized Nov. 23 for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough.

Bush, the 41st president, is the country?s oldest living former president by a few months.

No One Should Fear Floundering Houston Texans in NFL Playoffs

The Houston Texans aren't scaring anyone as they entering the 2013 NFL playoffs.

After being in control atop the AFC for much of the season, the Texans flopped in three of their last four games. So, instead of finishing 13-3 or 14-2 and locking up home-field advantage, the Texans slipped to 12-4. Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports? writes:

Just about every sudden weakness of the Texans was on display here Sunday. The offense, despite boasting Adrian Foster, suddenly can't score.

Defensively Houston gave up big plays, couldn't get off the field on third down and lost the time-of-possession battle. In need of a late game stop to give Schaub another chance to rally, Houston instead allowed a 9:46 game-ending drive, with the Colts in victory formation rather than running up the score.

At what level should Houston be panicking? (1=Least, 5=Most)

  • 5

Interestingly enough, it has been the most crucial of games throughout the season in which Houston has continued to fail.

The first happened in a prime time Sunday Night Football matchup when hosting the Green Bay Packers. Aaron Rodgers and Co. were a mere 2-3 when this Week 6 game kicked off. Well, the Packers bulldozed Houston, 42-24, and exploited the Texans pass defense.

Fast forward to Week 11, and we nearly saw Chad Henne and the Jacksonville Jaguars pull off the divisional road upset. Fortunately for Houston, that wasn't a big game and the Jaguars aren't any good.

Immediately after dodging a colossal upset, Houston edged past the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day. This time, much like when facing Green Bay, the Texans got sliced by a strong passing offense against Matthew Stafford, as the Lions amassed 525 total yards and once again exposed Houston's weakness: pass defense.

The surprising result from all this entering Week 13 was Jacksonville dicing up on the level of Green Bay and Detroit. After getting a better victory over the Titans, Houston was in another prime-time matchup in Week 14 on MNF.

On the road against the New England Patriots, this was expected to be a potential AFC championship preview. Instead, Tom Brady and the Pats steamrolled the Texans, 42-14. Once again, Houston failed miserably against the pass, and it came courtesy of an elite quarterback.

In Week 17, the Texans didn't give up a tremendous number of passing yards, but it was big plays across the board that cost Gary Kubiak's squad. The Indianapolis Colts returned a kickoff back for a score and got a huge pitch-and-catch from Andrew Luck and T.Y. Hilton for 70 yards in the fourth quarter.

Not to mention, Luck tossed for two scores and was sacked just once without throwing a pick in Indy's 28-16 victory.

Matt Schaub on the flip side, got sacked four times and threw two interceptions (no touchdowns). The result of this game simply echoed Houston's performances when facing a key game. From Randy Harvey of the Houston Chronicle:

Schaub might have joined Manning and Brady as AFC Pro Bowl quarterbacks this season, but, unlike them, he has yet to prove he can win a big game.

The Texans designated Schaub as the offensive leader when they gave him a four-year contract extension at the beginning of the season and the last month was the time for him to prove he deserved it. He has responded with one touchdown pass in the last 19 quarters.

As opposed to taking that next step and emerging as an elite team, the Texans have dropped. The defense also gave up 27 touchdown passes this season and recorded just 15 interceptions. Factor in an offense that's not high-powered, and teams such as the Patriots and Denver Broncos will outscore them?especially if Houston cannot generate turnovers.

The playoffs will just be an extension of the Texans' regular-season identity, because January is only tougher than November and December.

At least 15 killed in sect attack in north Nigeria

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) ? Witnesses say at least 15 people were killed when gunmen suspected to belong to a radical Islamist sect attacked a village in northeastern Nigeria.

The attack happened early Friday morning in the village of Musari on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the city where the sect known as Boko Haram launched its violent campaign against western education. Mshelia Inusa, a primary school teacher in the village, said he heard gunmen call out for people to be slaughtered.

Inusa said he later saw dead bodies with their throats slit and their hands tied behind their back. A guard at a Maiduguri hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he feared reprisals from the sect and the government, said he saw at least 15 bodies deposited in the morgue after the assault.

Yuvraj welcomes inclusion of young players in the national team ? Cricket News Update

Prolific India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has welcomed the inclusion of youngsters in the national T20 squad, saying the mix of youth and experience is very important in the shortest format of the game.

"New players are coming and the format is such that new players can perform well also," said the experienced left-hander while speaking to media reporters after India?s series-levelling 11-run victory over Pakistan in the second and final T20 International in Ahmedabad on Friday. "The inclusion of youngsters is very important in T20 cricket. The mix of youngsters and seniors is important," he added further.

The 31-year-old stylish Punjab cricketer was one of India?s standout players in the 11-run victory, playing a whirlwind knock of 72 runs, studded with seven sixes and four fours, to help the hosts?post a fightable total of 192 for 5. Yuvraj was well supported by skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (33 off 23), as the duo went on to post 97 runs for the fourth wicket, from just 44 balls.

Replying to a query regarding his big-hitting batting style, Yuvraj said, "I am just trying to watch the ball because if you make plans early and the ball is not there to be hit, you get out."

The Chandigarh born cricketer, who was adjudged as the Man of the Match for his spectacular 72, agreed that the fast paced T20 format requires different mindset; however, he insisted that there was no substitute to good cricketing shots.

On his approach to the game, the veteran left-hander, who recovered from a painful blow to his foot at the start of his innings, said that his aim right from the first ball was to stay at the crease till the end.

"I just wanted to stay till the end. In the previous games, I just held up a bit and I just got the opportunity to bat in the seventh over, so I thought to get set and then try hitting...I thought it was important for me to bat till the last five overs."

Yuvraj, 31, also complemented the efforts of the Indian fielders saying, ?Because of our fielding, we won the game. Catches of Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were exceptional at pressure times."

After having squared the two-match T20 series against Pakistan one-all, MS Dhoni and Co will next take on the tourists in three One Day Internationals, starting in Chennai on December 30, 2012.

Senate renews warrantless surveillance act

13 hrs.

The U.S. Senate Friday voted?overwhelmingly in favor of keeping a?George W. Bush-era surveillance law that will allow continued warrantless surveillance of Americans for the next five years.

The Senate's 73-23 vote on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) is an extension of the warrantless wiretapping law that grants legal immunity to telecommunications providers in order to continue to assist intelligence agencies with monitoring communications.

In addition to phone calls, text messages and emails may also be obtained by investigators for counterterrorism purposes, an easy assertion for law enforcement to make, Gizmodo reports.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, an Internet rights advocacy organization, claimed in a statement that the act "allows the government to get secret FISA court orders???orders that do not require probable cause like regular warrants???for any emails or phone calls going to and from overseas. The communications only have to deal with "foreign intelligence information," a broad term that can mean virtually anything. And one secret FISA order can be issued against groups or categories of people???potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of Americans at once."

"Incredibly, the Senate rejected all the proposed amendments that would have brought a modicum of transparency and oversight to the government's activities," the EFF said?Friday?after the vote.

The bill is now headed for President Obama's desk where he is expected to sign it. Although an identical bill elicited contentious debate in 2008, a different political climate made passage much easier now.

"This is the last opportunity for the next five years for the Congress to exercise a modest measure of real oversight over this intelligence surveillance law," Sen. Ron Wyden,?D-Oregon, told the press before the vote. "It is not real oversight when the United States Congress cannot get a yes or no answer to the question of whether an estimate currently exists as to whether law abiding Americans have had their phone calls and emails swept up under the FISA law."

Wyden had introduced an amendment to the bill that would have forced the National Security Agency?to disclose how many Americans had been affected by FISA. Since 2009 the agency has refused to share that information on the basis that it would violate the privacy of those affected.?

Exclusive: Phil Davis Discusses Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos & Ronda Rousey vs. Liz Carmouche

?

UFC 155 and the main event pitting UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos vs. former champion, Cain Velasquez is what everyone in the world of mixed martial arts is concentrated on. Velasquez is another UFC fighter who is represented by Zinkin and like Davis is a decorated collegiate wrestler. Davis explained to us that he is a fan as much as he is a fighter and he?s ready to see these two top heavyweights go at it once again.

?I like both guys so much and I feel like the challenger is the way to go in this one,? offered Davis. ?I knew going into the last fight that Cain had really hurt his knee. I respect him so much for going in there and I don?t think he was the one who said he had injured his knee. He was never going to mention it. He has a durable mindset and he?s going to go in there, win, lose or draw, hurt knee or not, like a warrior to compete and to win. That to me shows who he is, he?s that tough and a lot of guys wouldn?t have done that. I?m not saying that it was the right thing to do, but he did it and I respect him for it.?

Another hot button topic these days is the main event of UFC 157. For the first time in UFC history they will promote a women?s MMA bout as UFC Women?s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey defends her title against Liz Carmouche. The ladies have made a huge impact this year and caught the attention of a lot of MMA?s top fighters, including Davis.

?I?m a big fan of women?s MMA, I really am,? Davis admitted. ?It?s interesting because a lot of times women end up in positions a lot of guys don?t end up in. It?s a different dynamic, like mens tennis vs. womens tennis, it?s a different speed and they do different things. I?m a huge fan of Rousey, she snaps arms and I love that.?

With the end of 2012 coming upon us in just a few days, it?s time to look back upon some of the greatest moments that took place over the last 12 months. With so many great fights and a lot of fighters making names for themselves, it really is tough to choose because you know that you are bound to leave some things out. Davis found it difficult to remember whether some of these fights took place this year or last!

?Now that you put me on the spot with this, I?m thinking did that take place in 2012 or was that 2011,? joked Davis. ?When did Nate Diaz fight Cowboy Cerrone? How about Dan Henderson vs. Shogun Rua? Ok, let?s do this, any time Anderson Silva steps into the cage that?s one of my favorite fights. Anderson vs. Chael number two was definitely this year, don?t try and cheat me because that was 2012. I enjoyed the flyweight championship fight between Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson, that was probably the fastest paced fight ever and it was pretty awesome to watch.

Those guys were literally flying around the cage and there?s a picture of both of them punching and neither of them had their feet on the ground! I was like what?s going on here, are they using their super powers? I was expecting a lot when Jose Aldo fought Chad Mendes and it may not have been one of my favorite fights of the year, but it was still a pretty good fight. Then of course you have Ben Henderson just a couple of weeks ago, he looked fresh, he looked awesome.?

For Davis the year began with a main event fight against former champion Rashad Evans on the UFC on Fox 2 card in February. He may have lost, but he was exposed to a whole new audience of MMA fans in the process. They say every great fighter has to experience losing to become better and Davis is no different.

?In the last year I feel like I?ve improved all over,? Davis said. ?There?s no one place that I can say that it?s the only place I improved. I improved everywhere, absolutely everywhere. If I had to choose one, I would say I have made some nice gains in my standup.?

Looking forward to 2013 Davis explained some of his short and long term goals he has in mind for the new year.

?I just want to wrap up as many wins as I possibly can,? said the four-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler. ?I want to be in the title hunt and it?s weird because it could be a win or it could be three wins.?

December 28, 1908: The Tsunami of Messina

In the early morning of December 28, 1908 a 30 to 42 seconds long earthquake with a reconstructed magnitude of 6.7-7.2 hit the Italian cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria. The earthquake damaged 90% of the buildings and broken pipes fuelled a firestorm, an aftereffect known from many other earthquakes; however one of the most unusual effects of this earthquake was an 8 meter high tsunami which killed almost 2.000 people.

The earthquake killed estimated 40.000 people in the two cities alone, 27.000 people along the shores of the Strait of Messina - some historic documents claim 100.000 to 200.000 victims ? one of the deadliest natural disasters recorded during historic times in Europe.

Fig.1. A historical representation ? a ?Vue de l?Optique composition? (a hand-coloured copper engraving used in a Laterna magica) ? shows ships on the Strait of Messina during a series earthquake in 1783 with more than 35.000 victims.

South Italy is located between the borders of the two major continental plates of Europe and Africa and several microplates of the Mediterranean Sea. This geometry forms ?belts? with intense tectonic activity, recognized already in 1862.

The origin of the tsunami of Messina is still today an unsolved geological problem. The entire region is dominated by the large rift-zone of the Calabrian Arc, formed by the slow rollback of the oceanic crust of the Ionian Sea.

Fig.2. Simplified tectonic settings of South Italy and the intensity of the December 1908 earthquake after the modified Mercalli scale (data from INGV site). In this model the earthquakes of Calabria and Sicily are mostly associated with a rift valley formed by the rollback of the Ionian Sea.

This tectonic setting is characterized by faults with downwards movements, unusual to produce the upward push needed to generate a tsunami. Also no prominent fault or escarpment was until today discovered in the Strait of Messina or along the coasts of Sicily. Finally it is strange that the tsunami hit the shores 8 to 10 minutes after the quake, too late according to some researchers to be associated directly to the quake. A new hypothesis proposes that the tsunami of 1908 was therefore the result of a large underwater landslide, triggered by the earthquake.

The bottom of the sea revealed also that tsunami are frequent (in geologic time) catastrophes in the Mediterranean Sea. In sediments of the bay of Augusta (Sicily) researches discovered twelve layers, dated to 4.500 years, with microorganisms, especially foraminifers, living along the shores of the island. These layers were probably formed during past tsunami, when sediments were eroded from the beach and then transported by the backwash currents into the bay.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will host a meeting on Friday with the four top congressional leaders, a White House aide said on Thursday, as the president and lawmakers rush to break a deadlock over the so-called fiscal cliff days before a year-end deadline.

The president will meet with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage said.

Obama returned to Washington on Thursday after a truncated Hawaii vacation in an effort to restart stalled efforts aimed at averting tax increases and sharp spending cuts that economists say would push the economy into recession. The Senate also reconvened Thursday and the House of Representatives is due to go back into session on Sunday.

(AP) ? The end game at hand, President Barack Obama and congressional leaders made a final stab at compromise Friday to prevent a toxic blend of middle-class tax increases and spending cuts from taking effect at the turn of the new year.

Success was far from guaranteed in an atmosphere of political mistrust ? even on a slimmed-down deal that postponed hard decisions about spending cuts into 2013, and pessimism vied with optimism in a Capitol where lawmakers grumbled about the likelihood of spending the new year holiday in the Capitol.

"The clock is ticking," Sen. Max Baucus, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said in remarks on the Senate floor as Obama and congressional leaders were meeting several blocks away at the White House. "My message to them is simple. We can do this. We can get this done, and we must," added the Montana Democrat.

Congressional Democrats said Obama was ready with a revised offer to present.

But that drew a denial from a person familiar with the talks, who said the president would review his proposal from a week ago, when he urged lawmakers to preserve tax cuts for most while letting rates rise above incomes of $250,000 a year. At the same time, Obama said lawmakers should extend unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. The person was unauthorized to discuss the private meeting publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The meeting lasted a little over an hour and neither the president nor the four lawmakers spoke with reporters before or immediately after the session.

The guest list included two Republicans, House Speaker John Boehner, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell; as well as Democrats Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, her party's leader in the House.

The same group last met more than a month ago and emerged expressing optimism they could strike a deal that avoided the fiscal cliff. At that point, Boehner had already said he was willing to let tax revenues rise as part of an agreement, and the president and his Democratic allies said they were ready to accept spending cuts.

Since then, though, talks between Obama and Boehner faltered, the speaker struggled to control his rebellious rank and file, and Reid and McConnell sparred almost daily in speeches on the Senate floor. Through it all, Wall Street has paid close attention, and in the moments before the meeting, stocks were trading lower for the fifth day in a row.

The core issue is the same as it has been for more than a year, Obama's demand for tax rates to rise on upper incomes while remaining at current levels for most Americans. He made the proposal central to his successful campaign for re-election, when he said incomes above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples should rise to 39.6 percent from the current 35 percent.

Boehner refused for weeks to accept any rate increases, and simultaneously accused Obama of skimping on the spending cuts he would support as part of a balanced deal to reduce deficits, remove the threat of spending cuts and prevent the across-the-board tax cuts.

Last week, the Ohio Republican pivoted and presented a Plan B measure that would have let rates rise on million-dollar earners. That was well above Obama's latest offer, which called for a $400,000 threshold, but more than the speaker's rank and file were willing to accept.

Facing defeat, Boehner scrapped plans for a vote, leaving the economy on track for the cliff that political leaders in both parties had said they could avoid. In the aftermath, Democrats said they doubted any compromise was possible until Boehner has been elected to a second term as speaker when the new Congress convenes on Jan. 3.

Apart from income tax rates, congressional officials in both parties said a handful of other issues were the subject of private talks in the Capitol. These included the Alternative Minimum Tax, which would effectively raise taxes on millions of upper-middle-class families unless Congress acts; as well as taxes on capital gains, dividends and estates.

In addition, benefits for the long-term unemployed are due to expire in the next few days, and doctors face the prospect of a deep cut in the fees they receive for treating Medicare patients unless legislation is passed to prevent it.

Further compounding the year-end maneuvering, there are warnings that the price of milk could virtually double beginning next year.

Congressional officials said that under current law, the federal government is obligated to maintain prices so that fluid milk sells for about $20 per hundredweight. If the law lapses, the Department of Agriculture would be required to maintain a price closer to $36 of $38 per hundredweight, they said. It is unclear when price increases might be felt by consumers.

Mississippi River drops, threatening barge traffic

(AP) ? The Mississippi River level is dropping again and barge industry trade groups warned Thursday that river commerce could essentially come to a halt as early as next week in an area south of St. Louis.

Mike Petersen of the Army Corps of Engineers said ice on the northern Mississippi River is reducing the flow more than expected at the middle part of the river that is already at a low-water point unseen in decades, the result of months of drought.

The river level is now expected to get to 3 feet at the Thebes, Ill., gauge on Jan. 6, a juncture that could force new limitations. Worse still, the long-range forecast from the National Weather Service calls for the river to keep falling, reaching 2 feet on Jan. 23.

The Coast Guard remains confident that the nation's largest waterway will remain open. But officials with two trade groups ? the American Waterways Operators and Waterways Council Inc. ? said in a joint news release that even if the river is open, further limits on barges will bring commercial traffic to a halt.

Thebes, about 150 miles south of St. Louis, is a treacherous spot for barge operators because of hazardous rock formations and a big bend in the river. The corps is in the process of removing the rocks but work isn't expected to be finished until mid- to late-January at the earliest.

The trade groups renewed their call for presidential action requiring the Corps of Engineers to increase the flow of water from an upper Missouri River dam in South Dakota. The corps cut the flow by two-thirds in November because of drought conditions in that region, reducing the amount of Missouri River water flowing into the Mississippi.

Michael Toohey, president and CEO of Waterways Council Inc., said that without the additional flow "we will have run out of time on this national crisis."

The depth of the Mississippi is regulated by dams north of St. Louis, and the depth increases south of Cairo, Ill., where the Ohio River converges. But the roughly 180-mile stretch from St. Louis to Cairo is approaching record lows. Experts say that if barges stop moving, the potential impact on shipments of essentials such as corn, grain, coal and petroleum could reach into the billions of dollars.

Drafts, or the portion of each barge that is submerged, are already limited to 9 feet in the middle Mississippi. If the river gauge gets to 3 feet at Thebes, the Coast Guard may be forced to limit drafts even further. Restricted drafts mean less cargo per barge. Officials with the trade group say that if drafts are restricted to 8 feet or lower, many operators will halt shipping.

Lt. Colin Fogarty of the Coast Guard said the agency remains confident "we can still maintain a safe, navigable waterway despite the low-water conditions."

But he acknowledged, "I'm not trying to paint a pretty picture here. We face very real, physical limitations at certain parts of the river that may inhibit barge operators because their vessels draft too much or push too much water."

Contractors hired by the corps have been using excavators on barges to remove the rock pinnacles near Thebes, and performed the first series of explosions on the pinnacles Friday. Further decisions on when to blast will be made on a day-to-day basis, Petersen said.

The corps released water from Carlyle Lake in southern Illinois earlier this month, a move that helped the river rise about 6 inches. Petersen says another release began Thursday, which will add another 6 inches of depth by around Jan. 6, a move aimed at trying to stave off barge restrictions.

Fogarty said every effort is being made to help barges keep moving, but don't expect any magic turning point.

"There is no silver bullet," Fogarty said. "This isn't a battle against the water. This is a campaign."

Alice Levitt's Best New Restaurant Dishes of 2012 | Bite Club ... - Blogs

In revealing my picks for best new restaurant of 2012, I already expounded on my unholy affection for the salsa-verde-drenched tocino taco at El Cortijo Taqueria Y Cantina and, well, pretty much everything at Bluebird Barbecue.

Clearly, those are a couple of the best things I ate this year. But in an exceptionally good 12 months of restaurant openings, plenty of other dishes are worthy of mention. Here are 10 of my favorites.

IMG_4759Next Door Bakery & Caf?

A muffin? Huh?

No, seriously, a muffin was one of the best things I ate all year. The very first day that Next Door Bakery? Caf? opened its doors in Shelburne, I was smitten.

The honeysuckle-blueberry muffin has a silky texture unlike anything I've ever experienced in a muffin before, and I'll never be satisfied with most versions again. But among the wonderful firsts of the streusel-topped pastry, my first (and second and third...) honeysuckle aftertaste was definitely the coolest.

IMG_4826Gr?nhaus Nordic Street Eats

If the muffins at Next Door Bakery made me rethink the breakfast pastry, the hot chocolate at Montpelier's newest food cart did the same for hot drinks.

More like thick, rich European drinking chocolates than Swiss Miss, texture was just one thing that separated Gr?nhaus' chocolate from the pack. A dark, complex flavor, courtesy of a mix of Swedish and Belgian chocolates, is another. But best of all is the opportunity to pair it with a lefse, a sandwich wrapped in ultra-thin potato bread. I recommend the Elvis, composed of chocolate-almond butter, cinnamon, blueberries and bananas.

Stacks Sandwiches

My colleague Corin Hirsch pines for an Italian market in Burlington. We might not have that yet, but those of us craving a great Italian sub have finally found one at Stacks. Sharp Genoa salami, intense soppressata and mild, sweet ham combine with Provolone to create New Jersey in sandwich form. Ask for extra vinegar, and a trip south is rendered (mostly) unnecessary. Best of all, the sturdy, sesame-crusted rolls stand up to refrigeration, so get a large sandwich and have lunch the next day, too.

IMG_4641Pizza at Panadero

Believe it or not, a salad has made this list. That speaks volumes about both the craft and splendid ingredients with which the staff at Panadero Bakery made their weekly salad at the end of September.

Market-fresh ingredients that week included a forest-like bed of curly endive, thick, crisp bacon and crunchy pecans. Juicy slices of pear added sweetness to a creamy slice of Boucher Family Farm Gore-Dawn-Zola ready to be broken up into bite-sized chunks. With a light and tangy honey vinaigrette, the salad was much more than the sum of its parts.

The salads change weekly at the weekend-only dinner spot, but if that week's special was any indicator, they're all worth a trip.

PigThe Noble Pig

The name of the game for Cloud 9 Caterers' hot dog cart is handcrafted sausage. And deservedly so. But even the brilliant Bacon & Blue dog (stuffed with house bacon, cherry-pepper relish and creamy chunks of Bayley Hazen Blue from Jasper Hill Farm) wasn't the best thing I ate from the cart last summer.

That distinction belongs to the Belly Up.

On a sesame-seed-covered, homemade burger bun, thick, well-seasoned slabs of crisp pork belly were rendered so beautifully that they actually tasted lean. Bright, sweet pea shoots and kohlrabi were a great foil to the meat, but it was pickled watermelon slaw that really made the sandwich special. The crunchy melon rind had just a hint of vinegar and a thick coating of mayonnaise that made it a kind of relish and mayo hybrid ? made out of watermelon. Hopefully, something like this fantastic sandwich will make its way to the menu of Cloud 9's new food truck this winter.

IMG_4120Pizzeria Verit?

The chewy, lightly singed crust; fresh, homemade mozzarella and tangy San Marzano tomato sauce are just the beginning. I could eat the Margherita pie at Pizzeria Verit? all day. But I would rather take it several steps further and go for the Cherry Amore.

What started as a special was so addictively delicious that it's now on the permanent menu. Start with the basic, basil-topped Margherita. Then add another of my favorites, the Rucola e Prosciutto (shown here), with sharp arugula and salty prosciutto. Finally, top it all off with dried cherries and a drizzle of hot honey.

If you're not turned on yet, you'd best get to a doctor.

Prohibition Pig

From the start, there have been plenty of things to love about Prohibition Pig. Early on, I realized that nothing brought together all things wonderful about the Southern-inflected gastropub quite like the House Quarter Pounder.

The well-seasoned patty rests on a fluffy, egg-washed sweet potato bun, but that's just the beginning. The same bouncy pimiento cheese is spread thickly on top of the meat, often falling out and making a mini side dish of its own. House-smoked bacon is a salty pleasure, but the fried green tomato gives this burger its tangy, crunchy personality.

IMG_4174The Common Man

It's hard to choose just one dish from the tasting menu I enjoyed at the remade Common Man this year. Would it be the lightly dressed arugula salad that hid fresh basil and ruby-red strawberries? Perhaps the chilled Jerusalem artichoke soup dotted with couscous, sweet spring peas, zippy preserved lemon and a dollop of bright-red harissa oil?

In the end, I had to go with the perfectly seared halibut, fresh from Wood Mountain Fish.

Perched on a single, tender baby carrot placed delicately on buttery jasmine rice beside a smooth, gingery carrot pur?e, the kicker was an atomically delicious coconut-lemon emulsion. Months later, my taste buds still vibrate just thinking about it.

IMG_5022Cornerstone Pub & Kitchen

Another tough choice. Everything I had at the Cornerstone was delicious, and I've been telling anyone who will listen about the perfectly crisp duck confit over maple-flavored soldier beans. But I can't stop thinking about the pork shank.

Brined so it remained moist and delicious all the way down to the bone, the massive chunk of pig flesh was the best braise I ate all year. Flavors of honey and beer combined beautifully with an aged cheddar macaroni and cheese, which in turn paired perfectly with sweet, yielding collard greens. A dish of optimal balance and absolute indulgence.

IMG_4819Mr. Cr?pe

S'mores Cr?pe! S'mores Cr?pe! S'mores Cr?pe!

As soon as I tasted it, I knew it was my definitive dessert of the year. Forget about Nutella spread. The light, fluffy cr?pes at the Church Street eatery contain real melted chocolate ? from Belgium, natch ? along with sticky marshmallow and crumbles of graham cracker.

There are few more utterly satisfying ways to end a meal.

(AP) ? Kate Winslet has tied the knot again.

The Oscar-winning actress wed Ned Rocknroll in New York earlier this month. The private ceremony was attended by Winslet's two children as well as a few friends and family members, her representative said Thursday.

It is the third marriage for the 37-year-old Winslet, who won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in the 2008 film "The Reader." She was previously married to film directors Jim Threapleton and Sam Mendes.

The 34-year-old Rocknroll, who was born Abel Smith, is a nephew of billionaire Virgin Group founder Richard Branson.

The couple had been engaged since last summer.

In August 2011, Winslet and her children were staying at Branson's house in the Caribbean when it caught fire during a tropical storm and burned down. Winslet carried Branson's 90-year-old mother to safety.

Branson was staying in another property on the island. No one was injured.

SWAC Girl: Family snow day ... sledding, chili, board games

?The day-after-Christmas snowstorm yesterday left 4-6 inches of snow and ice in the Shenandoah Valley and, while we got out and roamed during the storm, the wind-driven sleet stung bare skin and made being outdoors cold and challenging.

?Today the sun came out and, though the temperatures remained cold and the wind blew, it was perfect for sledding on the hill behind our house. Our new son-in-law, who grew up in Atlanta, had never been sledding before so today provided the perfect opportunity for him to take part in this fun wintertime activity. He donned the proper winter gear and chose one of the many sleds that our kids have used throughout the years, and hit the trail.

?The icy surface made fast snow, and sledding runs were exciting as we zipped across the frozen precipitation. Runs began at the top of the hill and continued as far as the sledder was willing to go before climbing back up the hill to take yet another run.

?He caught on quickly and was enjoying the experience as much as everyone else.?

?The longest trail began at the top of the hill at the road ...

?... and continued to the bottom of the hill through the trees.

?Their sleds made a trail that went out of sight.

?Victory! He made it all the way to the bottom. The track to his left is where I went into some briary underbrush at the edge of the woods. There were a couple of bumps during the day, and he had brief encounters with several trees that left a bruise or two.

?It may be winter but the swing is still an attraction.

This was one of the tree encounters. He's not hurt ... he's lying on the ground laughing.?

It was a day filled with fun and laughter and good times, a reminder of the years our children were young and this was an everyday part of our lives whever we had snow. They could hardly wait to get outdoors, and then did not want to go back inside even though they were about to freeze. We would take off cold, wet gloves and boots and jackets and hats, and lay them around the wood stove to dry.

Some things never change ... today the wood stove was once again surrounded by gloves and boots and jackets and hats as they dried out for the next adventure into the snow. We stopped for lunch, eating chili and drinking eggnog, and played a board game and took it easy before heading out later in the day for night sledding. It was keeper day, the kind that makes memories.

Bears blitz Bruins 49-26 behind Martin, Florence

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Routing the UCLA Bruins almost seemed like a sidelight for Baylor Bears quarterback Nick Florence.

Nabbing one of Robert Griffin III's school records? Now that was a big deal.

The Bears overwhelmed the No. 17 Bruins 49-26 in the Holiday Bowl on Thursday night as Florence threw for two scores and ran for another. Glasco Martin ran for three touchdowns.

Florence completed 10 of 13 passes for 188 yards, giving him 4,309 for the season to break RG3's school record of 4,293 set in his 2011 Heisman Trophy-winning season.

"For me, I just wanted a chance to play. I just happened to follow a Heisman Trophy winner," Florence said. "I'm not Robert. I'm not 6-3. I don't run a 4.3. You saw that tonight. Man, if I could run a 4.3 it would be nice. So I just had to be me. I tried to manage this offense and play within myself. He's a heck of player, he's done a heck of a job for this program, put us on the map. I'm humbled and honored to hold that record. He deserves it. I never thought that would have happened this year. I just wanted to win games."

Baylor (8-5) won its final four games and five of six.

"That was a question we asked all our players, 'What was going to happen now that Robert's gone?'" coach Art Briles said. "And our guys responded, fought together, believed in each other. They have always sustained and never lost focus."

Lache Seastrunk rushed 16 times for 138 yards and one score for Baylor, which outgained UCLA 494-362. The Bears came in leading the nation in total offense with 578.8 yards per game.

Baylor's defense came up big, too. The Bears sacked Brett Hundley six times, including two by Chris McAllister, and shut down UCLA's career rushing leader Johnathan Franklin. Franklin, who averaged 130.8 yards this season, gained 12 yards on his first carry of the game but was a non-factor after that, finishing with just 34 yards on 14 carries.

Overall, the Bruins gained only 33 yards on 28 carries. They came in having averaged 202.9 yards rushing.

"They played well upfront," UCLA coach Jim Mora said. "When we are at our best is when we can run the football. We couldn't find any room to the football. They played physical."

Hundley was 26 of 50 for 329 yards and three touchdowns to set UCLA's season passing record with 3,740 yards. The old record was 3,470 by Cade McNown in 1998.

UCLA (9-5) lost its final three.

The Bruins were never in this one. Baylor raced to a 21-0 lead by early in the second quarter on Martin's 4-yard run and Florence's TD passes of 8 yards to Antwan Goodley and 55 yards to Tevin Reese.

UCLA punted four times and lost the ball on downs before getting a break when Baylor's Jordan Navjar fumbled after a reception when he was hit by Eric Kendricks, with Randal Goforth recovering at the Bears 21. Two plays later, Joseph Fauria caught a 22-yard pass from Hundley to pull the Bruins to 21-7.

Baylor quickly added two more touchdowns to put it out of reach at 35-7. Martin burst up the middle for his second touchdown of the game, a 26-yarder, and, after UCLA punted yet again, Seastrunk broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run with 1:58 left before halftime.

UCLA then converted two fourth downs, including a fake punt, to move to the Baylor 12 with 7 seconds left. On fourth-and-10, Mora opted to go for a field goal and Ka'imi Fairbairn converted from 30 yards.

Martin added a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter and Florence had a 1-yard scoring run in the fourth.

Martin had 98 yards on 21 carries.

Baylor rushed for 306 yards.

"We knew coming in that we could run the ball well, and the O-line did a heck of a job and made my job easy," Florence said. "It makes throwing a lot easier."

Hundley threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Shaq Evans early in the fourth quarter and a 34-yarder to Logan Sweet as the game ended.

Video shows woman pushing man in front of NYC subway train

NEW YORK (AP) ? A surveillance video of the woman suspected of pushing a man to his death in front of an oncoming subway train was released Friday by the New York Police Department.

It shows the woman running from the elevated platform in the Queens section of New York City Thursday night.

Witnesses told police she had been following the man closely and mumbling to herself. She got up from a nearby bench and shoved him as the train pulled into the platform.

It did not appear the man noticed her before he was shoved onto the tracks, police said, adding that the condition of the man's body was making it difficult to identify him.

The woman fled, and police were searching for her. She was described as Hispanic, in her 20s, heavyset and about 5-foot-5, wearing a blue, white and gray ski jacket and Nike sneakers with gray on top and red on the bottom.

It was unclear if the man and the woman knew each other or if anyone tried to help the man up before he was struck by the train and killed at the station on Queens Boulevard in the Sunnyside neighborhood.

It was the second time this month someone has been shoved to their death on subway tracks.

On Dec. 3, 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han was pushed in front of a train in Times Square. A photograph of him on the tracks a split second before he was killed was published on the front of the New York Post the next day, causing an uproar and debate over whether the photographer, who had been waiting for a train, should have tried to help him and whether the newspaper should have run the image. Apparently no one else tried to help up Han, either.

A homeless man, 30-year-old Naeem Davis, was charged with murder in Han's death and was ordered held without bail. He has pleaded not guilty and has said that Han was the aggressor and had attacked him first. The two men hadn't met before.

Being pushed onto the train tracks is a silent fear for many of the commuters who ride the city's subway a total of more than 5.2 million times on an average weekday, but deaths are rare. Among the more high-profile cases was the January 1999 death of aspiring screenwriter Kendra Webdale, who was shoved by a former mental patient. After that, the state Legislature passed Kendra's Law, which lets mental health authorities supervise patients who live outside institutions to make sure they are taking their medications and aren't threats to safety.

Here?s a look at 10 memes that made our Internet year worth living.

?Grumpy Cat
Grumpy Cat was not the only fresh-faced Internet cat of 2012, but she emerges as the most memorable ? largely because she rose to Reddit fame in the fourth quarter. A former shelter cat with a 24/7 scowl, Grumpy Cat (whose real name is Tartar Sauce), appears in countless LOL-style pictures, showing her disdain for everything from the holidays ("Ho. Ho. No.") and the anticlimactic Mayan apocalypse ("Still here. Worst apocalypse ever.") to people ("There are two kinds of people in the world. And I don't like them.")

As NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory team celebrated landing the Curiosity Rover on Mars, the Internet was far more intrigued by Bobak Ferdowsi, the young, handsome JPL team member with the star-spangled Mohawk hairdo.

Picking up more than 20,000 Twitter followers overnight, Ferdowski also earned the ultimate tribute, a Tumblr site featuring an ongoing supply of user-submitted LOL pictures, many with captions complimenting his cool, such as this one: "Becomes an Internet sensation ... Too busy landing a robot on Mars to notice."

Binders Full of Women Tumblr

Binders Full of Women
While the President Barack Obama-bashing "You Didn't Build That" had decent run, it was Republican candidate Mitt Romney who inspired most of the memes of the 2012 presidential election. There was "Fired Big Bird," a viral response to Romney's comment about possible budget cuts to public broadcasting. Clint Eastwood, who addressed an empty chair (meant to represent Obama) at the Republican National Convention gave us "Eastwooding" (photos of fingers pointing at chairs).

But it was "Binders Full of Women,"?inspired by Romney's comment about pay equity, that brought the meme madness. From the Trapper Keeper notebook emblazoned with the words "Trap Her Keep Her" that graced the?original?"Binders Full of Women" Tumblr?to a "Say Anything"-era John Cusack holding binders (instead of a boom box) over his head, there seemed no end to the ways the Internet could illustrated this quote ... until everyone got bored and moved on.

Texts From Hillary

Texts from Hillary
A couple news photos showing sunglasses-wearing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton aboard a military C-17 aircraft and checking out her cellphone inspired two guys to launch the "Texts from Hillary" Tumblr.?

Adam Smith and Stacy Lambe manipulated the images to the max, juxtaposing photos to reveal Clinton cellphone-trolling everyone from Sarah Palin and President Barack Obama, to "Pretty Little Liars,"?a free-car offering?Oprah Winfrey and the ever-texting Jeff Winger of "Community." Our favorite remains a cross pollination of the still-hilarious Ryan Gosling "Hey Girl" Tumblr meme.

Ridiculously Photogenic Guy
Just a guy who happened to smile at a camera while running a marathon in South Carolina, Zeddie Little achieved Internet fame the way so many humans and cats do these days???via Reddit. The accidental photo bomb of Mr. Ridiculously Photogenic Guy?(as the photo was described when first posted to Reddit) became the subject of a very complimentary photo meme similar to that enjoyed by Nasa Mohawk Guy. His original picture was adorned with phrases such as "Looks into broken mirror ? fixes it" and "Photo bombs a picture ? everyone else is cropped out."

As Know Your Meme notes, "Mr. Ridiculously Photogenic Guy" inspired a number of derivatives, including "Ridiculously Photogenic Puppy," Ridiculously Photogenic Surgery Girl," and "Ridiculously Photogenic Syrian Rebel."

Overly Attached Girlfriend
Unlike Mr. Ridiculously Photogenic Guy, Overly Attached Girlfriend (Laina Walker) achieved her Internet infamy kinda sorta on purpose, via her YouTube song "Boyfriend," a spoof on the Justin Bieber song "Girlfriend."

"If I was your girlfriend / I?d never let you leave / without a small recording device / taped under your sleeve," is just one line of Walker's singing satire. Of course, it helped that the screen grab that went on to become a photo meme captured Walker wide-eyed and looking a little crazy. "I sewed my name on your shirt ? in case you forgot you're taken" and "Oh, you found someone else? I'm pregnant" were two favorites.?

The fake photos of Superstorm Sandy
In late October, as Superstorm Sandy lurched towards New York City, 10 pictures per second were being posted to Instagram with the hashtag #sandy ? mostly of people prepping for the storm or what it looked like outside. Then there were the fake Sandy photos popping up all over social media. Some tried to pass off screen grabs from "The Day After Tomorrow." Others used Photoshop to show Godzilla emerging towards the waves or a kitty-faced storm cloud looming over the Statue of Liberty, funny stuff which help?alleviate?storm-inspired stress.?

As we noted then, many of us at home had little else to do but update our social media statuses?while we still had electricity, and were grateful to those who made with the funny.?

McKayla is Not Impressed?
A momentary facial movement, frozen in time, made United States gymnast McKayla Maroney?the biggest photo bomb meme of 2012. There she was, receiving the Silver Medal at the London Olympic Games for what many said was a nearly flawless vault, arms crossed and looking ? well ? really not impressed.

Thanks to the magic of the Internet, Maroney was soon looking unimpressed with plenty of things ("Hydrox? I thought you said Oreos") and turning up in famous memes of years past ? Kanye West and Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Music Awards, the "Situation Room" scene when Obama, Clinton and the rest of the gang received news of the Osama bin Laden raid, and even "NASA Mohawk Guy."?For her part, Maroney took it all in stride, and recently even struck her famous pose with the President.

ERMAHGERD!
When the photo of an adolescent girl with pigtails, a retainer and books from R.L. Stein's "Goosebumps" series first hit Reddit, it wasn't immediately clear how the meme would go. The phonetic mimic of what it sounds like when you're an excited kid with a mouth full of orthodonture inspired "ERMAHGERD!" ("Oh my God!), GERSBERMS ("Goosebumps") and "BERKS! (Books!) as the meme ramped up. But in the end, the Internet favored "ERMAHGERD!" And really, can you blame us? What better word describes overwhelming excitement and joy over something you find to painfully awesome! It's especially hilarious when "said" by an animal ? at least in the ongoing photo meme.

YouTube

Gangnam Style
The first video on the Internet to be viewed more than a billion times, this K-Pop hit by Korean rapper PSY is?inarguably?the top meme of 2012. The song, the video and the crazy cowboy dance moved past the meme-makers of the Internet to achieve mainstream obsession. Even before the "Saturday Night Life" sketch (featuring a cameo by PSY), YouTube was lousy with "Gangnam Style" parodies, from the political "Mitt Romney Style" to a?baby version, a?Gangam-meets-Minecraft sendup?and even a?Brony interpretation, as well as the must-see?"Teens React"?video from viral pros the Fine Bros. And?so on.

"Gangnam Style" mania also inspired a bait-and-switch?Jar Jar Binks "Gungan Style" video from Funny or Die's Nick Wiger that borders on brilliant. If you watch it through, you're rewarded with a cold-splash-of-water interpretation of how we're spending our life on the Internet. No spoiler alert here. You've got "Gangnam Style" stuck in your head now anyway, so you might as well have a look. ??
