Intel, Total Immersion working on augmented reality chipsets (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Total Immersion, a pioneer in emerging field of augmented reality (AR), is working with Intel to bring AR features, like gesture recognition, into Intel's chipsets, an executive of the privately held firm said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the Reuters Global Media Summit, Total Immersion's marketing chief Antoine Brachet said consumer acceptance will decide when products would reach the market, but he thinks this could happen in 2-3 years.

Running on smartphones or computers, AR overlays digital information - text, graphics, games -- on images of the world around us.

Intel, whose processors are used in 80 percent of the world's personal computers, took a stake in Total Immersion in March when its investment arm led the $5.5 million funding round in the firm.

"What we are doing together with Intel is working on their chipset ... so inside the chipset you can have some AR features, like gesture recognition that can be transferred from software to hardware," Brachet said.

Moving the feature into hardware will make it faster to use for consumers and could boost takeup of the new technology among consumers as it would be in all devices, without the need for additional downloads.

The 1999-founded Total Immersion is one of the largest players in the emerging augmented reality industry which has lately attracted technology sector heavyweights like Google, Intel and Qualcomm.

"Those guys understand the fact that something is going to happen and they want to take a potential position in that," Brachet said.

Google's new maps guide users in malls, airports

Google's next frontier in digital mapping will span the world's shopping malls and airports.

An upgrade of Google's mobile mapping service released Tuesday includes directions within stores, malls, airports and transit centers in the U.S. and Japan.

The initial index only covers a small fraction of the great indoors, but Google Inc. is hoping that will change as more owners and operators of shopping and transportation hubs submit their indoor floor plans so they can be mapped.

For now, Google's indoor maps can only be viewed on smartphones and tablet computers that run on the company's Android software. That's still a potentially huge audience because more than 550,000 Android-powered devices are activated each day and the mobile maps will work on versions of Android released as far back as 2009.

The free indoor mapping tool represents Google's latest attempt to deepen people's attachment to their Android phones so the company has more opportunities to sell ads pitching products and services to people on the go. Helping people navigate their way around malls and stores also complements Google's effort to turn the Android phones into digital wallets that replace cash and conventional credit cards.

Google wouldn't say why the feature would work only on Android devices. The company also wouldn't say whether it eventually plans to offer the indoor maps on other products, such as Apple Inc.'s popular iPhone and iPad, or whether the feature will eventually be available on desktop and laptop computers, too.

The company's online maps already provide detailed driving, walking and even biking directions on city streets and highways throughout the world. In some instances, Google has supplemented its digital maps with photographs of the charted area ? a feature that has triggered privacy complaints and, in some countries, regulatory crackdowns.

The indoor maps are designed to reduce the disorientation that frequently occurs in sprawling stores and other large complexes.

If the floor plan is included in Google's index, the software pinpoints a user's location with a blue dot. The user can then figure out where the nearest bathroom is in a mall or find an airport's gate for a departing flight. The software is programmed to automatically change to a different floor in a building when the user does.

"It's like we have taken the map that you see on a kiosk at a store or mall and put it on your phone," said Steve Lee, a product management director for Google.

The tracking technology plots a user's location based on cell towers, GPS and publicly broadcast Wi-Fi signals. That's similar to what Google already does to identify where users are when they're viewing street maps. Google's engineers refined the system for the indoor maps so users can be shadowed with even more precision.

The indoor directions include two retailers known for their labyrinth stores ? Home Depot and Ikea. Macy's and Bloomingdales also have shared the floor plans of a few of their biggest stores.

The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., which is the size of seven Yankee Stadiums, is already in Google's database, as are smaller malls in Illinois, Virginia and southern California. There are also directions for 18 U.S. airports, including those in Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, San Francisco and Las Vegas.

Walker appointee: Workplace harassment of gays is legal | Dane101

Post by stcroix cheesehead on 11/28/2011 10:20am

This article originally appeared in a November 25, 2011 post by StCroix Cheesehead on DailyKos. A portion is reprinted here with permission of the author.

Wisconsin was the first state to pass legislation prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual preference. 1981 Assembly Bill 70 added sexual orientation to the list of legally protected classes, along with gender, race, and religion. This legislation was signed by a Republican governor, Lee Dreyfus.

Laurie McCallum, recently appointed by Scott Walker to our state's Labor and Industry Review Commission, has just gone on record asserting, despite state statute and precedent, that Wisconsin's workplace protections only apply to sexual harassment.

NEPOTISM.

Followers of Wisconsin politics know that Senate majority leader Scott Fitzgerald helped get his brother Jeff (now speaker of the assembly) into his Assembly seat. Than they got their father a spot as head of the State Patrol.

You might know that Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch (gay marriage is like marrying tables or dogs) is married to Joel Kleefisch, a prominent member of the Assembly. This is Rebecca's first go at public office. Nice, starting out as Lieutenant Governor.

So who's Laurie McCallum? She's the wife of former republican Governor Scott McCallum, who lost re-election in 2002 to Democrat Jim Doyle. McCallum, Governor Tommy Thompson's Lieutenant Governor, became Governor when than President George W. Bush appointed Tommy Thompson to be Secretary of Health and Human Services.

THE CASE.

The full article is in the Wisconsin Gazette. The case involves Chris Bowen, who worked for two decades at Stroh Tool and Die:

The court record showed that a group of Bowen?s co-workers repeatedly called him ?fag,? ?maricon? and ?my little bitch,? among other slurs, over a period of years. Bowen once found a bulls-eye hunting target over which the word ?gay? was written stuck to his toolbox. Someone put a sign that said, ?queer? or ?queen? on his locker. A sticker was put in his workplace that said, ?Honk if you?re gay.?

In a statement that was excluded as evidence at Bowen?s administrative hearing, co-worker Kathryn Corroo said, ?I witnessed the sexual harassment against Chris Bowen, especially during February 2002 through May 2002 by (co-employees) Tom Meier, Rick Hafemeister, David Lepke, Jesse Manhardt and Rose McGee. ? I heard Tom Meier say that Chris was not in a very good mood and that maybe it was because he (Chris) didn?t get a apiece (sic) of ass over the weekend at Pridefest, the day after the weekend of Pridefest. I heard Rick Hafemeister make comments to Chris and myself about how all nigers (sic) and queers, etc. ... (sic) should be put in a big hole and shot. And get rid of them all.?

There's more to this post. To read the entirety please visit StCroix Cheesehead's post at DailyKos.

Opalesque Commodities Briefing | Think about silver before investing

The Gold-Silver ratio: Throughout history the ratio between gold and silver has been in the range of 12:1 to 16:1. What this means is that for every ounce of gold you would be able to exchange it for 12 to 16 ounces of silver. This was generally the case because there is approximately 12 to 16 times more silver in the earth?s crust than there is gold.

Although this ratio has remained quite constant, the current ratio is 50:1. With one ounce of gold you can currently buy a whopping 50 ounces of silver???????????????Full Article: Source

(AP) ? If Ohio State did not come calling, Urban Meyer says he was planning to stay away from coaching for at least another year.

Meyer, the former Florida coach and native Buckeye, was officially hired Monday by Ohio State, a program with a glittering past that has suffered through a difficult year of NCAA violations.

"If not for the coaching position at Ohio State, I would not have coached this year,' he said.

Meyer resigned as Gators coach after last season, citing health concerns and a desire to spend more time with his family.

"A year ago in my mind I was convinced I was done coaching," he said.

He added that he is feeling great.

"I've been checked out and I'm ready to go," he said. "I've been to a place and I don't want to go back."

Meyer will become one of the highest paid coaches in college football, along with Alabama's Nick Saban and Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, and Texas' Mack Brown. The school says he will receive a six-year contract that pays $4 million annually, plus another $2.4 million total in "retention payments." He also can qualify for supplemental bonuses.

Interim coach Luke Fickell, who took over when Jim Tressel was forced out for breaking NCAA rules, will coach the Buckeyes (6-6) in their bowl game and be retained by Meyer as an assistant, although Meyer declined to say in what capacity.

Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith said his first conversation with Meyer about becoming coach was on Nov. 20 by phone. Smith said the two met face-to-face Nov. 23.

Meyer won two national championships in six years as the coach at Florida. Now, the 47-year-old will return to the place where his college coaching career began in 1986 after spending a year as an ESPN game analyst.

Smith said he was won over by Meyer.

"There's a right time for certain leaders," he said. "This is the right time for Urban Meyer to lead this football team. ... He gets it."

Earle Bruce, the head coach at Ohio State when Meyer was a graduate assistant, has remained a close friend and confidant of Meyer through the years. He said he had no concerns about Meyer's health.

"Well, if he'd had a heart attack and his heart was bad, I'd be worried about that," the 80-year-old Bruce said on Monday. "I'm not worried that he was stressed out over the game of football because he was thinking too much and not doing some things (exercising) that would have kept him straight. I think he got everything back under control by sitting out a year. I think he missed football. And he's good at it."

Meyer's news conference had to be stopped momentarily when a woman operating a camera for the Big Ten Network kneeled over during the middle of Meyer's remarks. She was helped out of the meeting room.

Meyer met with the team on Monday before his news conference. He said he was impressed with the players' enthusiasm and acceptance.

Alabama coach Nick Saban, who played at Kent State and coached at Toledo in the Buckeye state, said he was happy for Meyer.

"I'm sure he's excited about it, and I'm excited for him that he has an opportunity to go back to his home state and be the head coach here," Saban said. "I think it's a wonderful opportunity and I think he'll do a great job."

Meyer takes over a program that is likely facing NCAA sanctions and was crippled by the forced resignation of Tressel. The Buckeyes completed their only season under Fickell with a 40-34 loss to Michigan on Saturday that snapped a seven-game winning streak to their rivals.

Wolverines coach Brady Hoke underplayed the role of the head coaches in the rivalry.

"I've known Urban, he's a good football coach, a good guy and I welcome him in," Hoke said on Monday. "But it's still Michigan and Ohio and neither one of us is going to play the game."

In 10 seasons as a head coach ? two at Bowling Green, two at Utah and six at Florida ? Meyer has a 104-23 record. His teams are 7-1 in bowl games, including the Gators' 41-14 victory over unbeaten and top-ranked Ohio State in the 2007 Bowl Championship Series title game.

Meyer had persistently denied all the talk surrounding him and Ohio State. Soon after Tressel stepped down, Meyer said he wasn't interested in leaving ESPN, where he was a college football analyst.

The chance to coach Ohio State changed his mind, he said.

"He enjoyed what he was doing, but I think he also had the bug to start coaching again," ESPN broadcast partner and former Ohio State linebacker Chris Spielman said. "This was just an opportunity that he couldn't pass up."

Meyer inherits a program still facing NCAA sanctions. But he also inherits a young team led by a freshman quarterback, Braxton Miller, who would seem to be a perfect fit for his spread offense.

"We're putting a lot of pressure on this cat," Meyer joked once after several questions about the freshman. "He's special."

A native of Ashtabula, Ohio, Meyer becomes the 24th head coach at Ohio State. He succeeds Fickell, who took over last spring when Tressel's 10-year reign came crashing down. Tressel was forced out for knowing but not telling his superiors that Buckeyes players had most likely broken NCAA rules by taking cash and free or discounted tattoos from the subject of a federal drug-trafficking investigation.

Ohio State's .500 record this season marked the most losses at Ohio State since John Cooper's 1999 team also went 6-6 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten.

The Buckeyes had already lost their string of six Big Ten titles when the school was forced to vacate the 2010 season for the NCAA violations. The school has also self-imposed two years of NCAA probation, offered to return $339,000 in bowl revenue from 2010 and to give up five scholarships over the next three seasons.

Ohio State is awaiting final word from the NCAA's committee on infractions. The committee tagged Ohio State with a "failure to monitor" label ? second only to a lack of institutional control on the list of most egregious charges against a university. The school could still be hit with a bowl ban, a loss of more scholarships, or other penalties.

At the urging of Bruce, Meyer took his first head coaching job at Bowling Green (2001-2002) where he led the Falcons to records of 8-3 and 9-3 before jumping to Utah.

Using a spread offense featuring quarterback Alex Smith, the Utes went 10-2 in his first year. In 2004, he led Utah to an 11-0 season and a Bowl Championship Series berth.

After a bowl win over Pittsburgh to cap the 12-0 season, he was the top candidate for the jobs at both Notre Dame and Florida. He surprised many by becoming a Gator.

In his second season with the Gators, No. 2-ranked Florida beat unbeaten Ohio State, coached by Tressel, 41-14 to win his first national title.

Two years later, the Gators won another national title, beating Oklahoma 24-14 behind Tim Tebow.

The next year Florida contended for a repeat, but after losing the SEC title game to Alabama, Meyer said he was retiring from coaching, citing health problems. He changed his mind and was back the next day, saying he would only take a leave of absence.

After the 2010 season, he stepped down again.

Groupon for Lawyers: MyLegal.com Delivers Legal Deals ? Robert ...

Websites offering coupons and daily deals are all the rage. Why should lawyers be left out? No longer need they be, thanks to a new feature of MyLegal.com?that offers special deals on products and services targeted to lawyers, paralegals, legal secretaries and legal administrators.

MyLegal.com already provided a directory of legal vendors and, early in 2011, it added user reviews of vendors (although reviews remain scant). Starting in October, it added vendor deals, enabling vendors to offer discounts on their products and services. You can sign up to receive each day?s deal by email or you can visit the site and browse the list of deals. There are no coupons to buy; instead, you simply send an email asking to be given the deal.

On a recent visit, the listings of deals included a digital-evidence company offering $2,000 off trial technician services, an office supply company offering $25 off a purchase of $75 or more, a jury consultant offering half off a jury memo, and a court reporting firm offering two free hours of its services.

To view these deals, there is no cost or registration required. For that reason, you have nothing to lose by checking this site before purchasing goods or services for your law office. Who knows ? you might just save a few bucks.

World stocks rise from 7-week low on Europe hopes (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? World stocks rose from last week's 7-week low on Monday as hopes grew euro zone leaders would unveil fresh measures to resolve the two-year-old debt crisis, while caution ahead of next week's key summit kept the euro and German yields under pressure.

An unsourced report in Italian daily La Stampa suggested the International Monetary Fund was preparing a rescue plan for Italy worth up to 600 billion euros ($796 billion), later dismissed by an IMF spokesperson.

But a downgrade in Belgium's sovereign rating late on Friday and a warning by Moody's that the rapid escalation of the region's sovereign and banking crisis threatens the rating of all European government bonds kept top-rated German debt supported.

"The bears out there will know that markets do not go down in a straight line and this could be just a relief rally in what will prove to be a prolonged bear market," said Stan Shamu, strategist at IG Markets.

MSCI world equity index (.MIWD00000PUS) gained 0.9 percent, rising for the first time after ten consecutive days of losses. The index is down nearly 15 percent since January and more than 22 percent since hitting a three-year high in May.

European stocks (.FTEU3) and emerging stocks (.MSCIEF) both rose around 1.5 percent.

U.S. stock futures were up more than 2 percent, pointing to a firmer open on Wall Street later.

The market was also expected to get some support from news that U.S. retailers racked up a record $52.4 billion in sales over the Thanksgiving weekend, a 16.4 percent jump.

U.S. crude oil gained 2.2 percent to $98.92 a barrel.

Bund futures were steady on the day.

After the Italian aid report, Italian/German 10-year government bond yield spread tightened 10 basis points to 496 bps.

The premium investors pay to hold Belgium's 10-year government bonds rather than German debt was largely unchanged from Friday at 368 basis points.

Belgian borrowing costs have increased sharply in past weeks as the country has struggled to set up a government, with the country's benchmark 10-year yield rising near the 6 percent level on Friday, beyond which financing costs could become unsustainable.

A sustained rise in yields is likely to scare some of the long-term euro bond buyers. Kokusai Asset Management, Japan's biggest mutual fund, said it had sold all its Italian, Spanish and Belgian bond holdings, spooked by a jump in Italian bond yields to above 7 percent and other signs that the crisis in Europe was deepening [ID:nL4E7MS152].

Investors will keep a close eye on developments in the euro zone. Documents showed detailed operational rules for the region's bailout fund were ready for approval and will clear the way for the 440 billion euro facility to attract cash from private and public investors in coming weeks.

Officials say Germany and France are exploring ways for rapid fiscal integration among euro zone countries. Germany's original plan was to get all 27 countries on board, but officials have been looking at alternatives such as an agreement among just the euro zone countries or a separate agreement outside the EU treaty that could involve a core of around 8-10 euro zone countries.

The euro fell 0.1 percent to $1.3301.

The dollar (.DXY) fell 0.6 percent against a basket of major currencies.

Occupy LA deadline comes, many say they won't go (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? With the clock winding down on a midnight deadline to abandon their weeks-old Occupy Los Angeles protest, hundreds of demonstrators weren't going anywhere Sunday, as they made plans instead to hold an "eviction block party."

Although city officials have told protesters they must leave and take their nearly 500 tents with them by 12:01 a.m. Monday, just a handful were seen packing up Sunday.

Instead, some passed out fliers containing the city seal and the words: "By order of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, this notice terminates your tenancy and requires you to attend the Occupy L.A. Eviction Block Party," which the fliers' said was scheduled for 12:01 a.m.

Others attended teach-ins on resistance tactics, including how to stay safe should police begin firing rubber bullets or breaking out tear gas canisters and pepper spray.

"Their plan is to resist the closure of this encampment and if that means getting arrested so be it," said Will Picard, one of the protesters. "I think they just want to make the police tear it down rather than tear it down themselves."

Police, for their part, have said little about what tactic they would take if protesters ignore the deadline.

Chief Charlie Beck told reporters Friday that officers would definitely not be sweeping through the camp and arresting everyone the minute the clock ticks past midnight.

But in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that was published Sunday, Beck indicated he expects that arrests will become inevitable at some point.

"I have no illusions that everybody is going to leave," Beck said. "We anticipate that we will have to make arrests."

When it comes to that, he said, police officers "will not be the first ones to apply force."

Meanwhile, local clergy and labor leaders implored both sides to ensure that the 2-month-old demonstration remain peaceful.

"We are grateful to the Occupy movement for refocusing the country to the issue of income inequality," Maria Elena Durazo, executive secretary and treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, said in a statement issued Sunday.

"We call for nonviolence in all acts of civil disobedience by Occupy LA and in professional procedures by the LAPD. We are committed to a long-term movement from the 99 percent to hold Wall Street and the banks accountable for devastating our economy," Durazo added.

Villaraigosa has expressed admiration that, at least so far, the Occupy Los Angeles movement has remained peaceful, unlike those in some other cities around the country.

But while the mayor, a former labor organizer himself, has said he sympathizes with the movement, he added it's time to close the encampment of some 500 tents that dot the lawn in front of City Hall for the sake of public health and safety.

The 2-month-old movement is also at a crossroads, Villaraigosa said, and must "move from holding a particular patch of park to spreading the message of economic justice."

Although most protesters showed no signs of moving Monday, a few did seem to support the mayor's sentiments.

"I'm going," said Luke Hagerman, who sat looking sad and resigned in the tent he's lived in for a month. "I wish we could have got more done."

Investing in Our Future: HIV Prevention Research | CrowdOutAIDS

Guest Blogger: Emily de Lacy Donaldson, MPH

Project Assistant, AVAC: Global Advocacy for HIV Prevention

By involving young people, UNAIDS hopes to create a more effective strategy to combat the rise of HIV infection in youth. With 3,000 young people infected with HIV each day this proves to be both necessary and challenging.

The opportunity to create our own strategy comes with a lot of responsibility. We must make sure we are educated and active participants. We need to know what works, what solutions are the most effective at preventing the epidemic in young people and where our limited resources should be spent.

To get from 3,000 new infections each day to zero, we need proven techniques. We know by now that the tools currently at our disposal are not enough. We also need new ways of preventing HIV, such as microbicides, pre-exposure prophylaxis (prEP) and a preventive vaccine. The HIV prevention research field is ripe with new developments and pipelines of new approaches are being tested. As today?s youth, these future options will be ours and we need to ensure continued investment in research for new HIV prevention options.

Since 2004, the HIV Vaccines and Microbicides Resource Tracking Working Group has followed investments in HIV prevention research. The information collected is used by advocates, researchers, funders and policy makers to assess how much is spent on HIV prevention research & development (R&D) and what areas need additional funds.

The Working Group is a collaboration of AVAC: Global Advocacy for HIV Prevention, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

Tracking investments in HIV prevention research is a necessary part of our strategy development. We can use these figures to advocate?for areas that need increased resources, to hold accountable public, private and philanthropic donors to sustain funding and to make sure all HIV prevention tools are receiving adequate investments.

As we face a widening global HIV funding gap, we need to use all resources available to ensure efficient and effective investments in a wide range of options. We need to be smart about what we want and how much money it costs. We need to show the world that now is the time to invest in young people!

'Twilight' keeps shining with $42M second weekend (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The latest "Twilight" movie has plenty of daylight left with a second-straight win at the weekend box office.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1" took in $42 million domestically over the three-day weekend and $62.3 million in the five-day Thanksgiving boom time from Wednesday to Sunday. That raised its domestic total to $221.3 million, while the Summit Entertainment release added $71.5 million overseas to lift the international total to $268 million and the worldwide take to $489.3 million.

Debuting at No. 2 was Disney's family flick "The Muppets," with $29.5 million for the three-day weekend and $42 million over the five-day holiday haul.

Three other family films rounded out the top-five: the Warner Bros. sequel "Happy Feet Two" at No. 3 with a three-day total of $13.4 million and $18.4 million for five days; Sony's animated comedy "Arthur Christmas" at No. 4 with $12.7 million for three days and $17 million for five days; and Paramount's epic adventure "Hugo" at No. 5 with $11.4 million for three days and $15.4 million for five days.

Between "Breaking Dawn" and the blitz of family films, analysts thought Hollywood had a shot at record revenue over Thanksgiving, one of the year's busiest weekends at movie theaters. But viewers did not come in anywhere close to record numbers.

"I was pretty surprised by this. I just thought this was the perfect combination of films in the marketplace," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "Maybe there was just too much out there."

Domestic revenue totaled $234 million from Wednesday to Sunday, well below the $273 million record set two years ago, when "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" led the Thanksgiving weekend, according to Hollywood.com. Receipts also fell short of last Thanksgiving's $264 million haul, when "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" finished on top.

Studio executives concede it's growing harder to lure fans into theaters given all the portable games, devices and other electronics people have to fill up their entertainment time. A so-so Thanksgiving on a weekend with such a good variety of movies could be a sign that Hollywood simply has to live with diminished expectations.

"I don't know that choice is ever a bad thing, and in terms of a weekend for families, this is one of the best," said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney, which brought "The Muppets" back to the big-screen after a 12-year absence. "The challenge is breaking through and being relevant and meaningful and fresh enough to take the more finicky customers and have them choose you."

Disney reported that "The Muppets" drew a good mix of families and couples without children who fondly remember Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of the gang on "The Muppet Show." The film stars Jason Segel and Amy Adams as fans helping to reunite the Muppets for a telethon to save their decaying studio.

"Breaking Dawn" was holding close to the pattern set by "New Moon" two years ago, though domestic revenues were off slightly. Factoring in higher ticket prices since "New Moon," the audience shrank even further for "Breaking Dawn."

"I think the audience has changed a bit. Everybody's grown a little older, and I guess we lose a few of our patrons to age," said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Summit.

With no big new releases coming next weekend, though, "Breaking Dawn" has a shot at making up some ground, Fay said.

"Happy Feet Two" has failed to live up to its Academy Award-winning predecessor, a blockbuster that took in nearly $200 million domestically. The sequel about dancing penguins has managed just $43.8 million since opening Nov. 18, a 10-day total that barely matches the opening-weekend gross of the 2006 original.

"Arthur Christmas," from the British animation unit Aardman that made "Chicken Run" and the "Wallace and Gromit" films, has long-haul potential because of its good reviews and holiday story line. The voice cast includes James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie and Jim Broadbent in a Christmas Eve romp about a child's present that falls through the cracks in Santa Claus' high-tech delivery operation.

"To have the one picture that really is kind of carrying the torch as a Christmas picture really bodes well for the future," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony.

Distributor Paramount has similar long-term hopes for Martin Scorsese's "Hugo," which also has great reviews. Based on a children's book, "Hugo" follows the adventures of an orphan boy who tends the clocks in a Paris train station and becomes caught up in unraveling a mystery that connects a surly old man (Ben Kingsley) and a mechanical automaton the youth is trying to repair.

Paramount scaled back "Hugo" from a full wide release over Thanksgiving, opening it in 1,277 theaters, about a third the number for most other top movies. The studio plans to roll the film out more gradually, spreading its marketing budget over the coming weeks to capitalize on the critical word of mouth and potential awards buzz leading up to the Jan. 24 Oscar nominations.

Critics have praised "Hugo" for Scorsese's dazzling use of 3-D. Unlike 3-D fatigue that set in for some other recent movies, whose 3-D business dipped below half of total revenues, "Hugo" audiences have been willing to pay an extra few dollars to see it in three dimensions. About 75 percent of the film's revenue came from 3-D screenings, according to Paramount.

"People are reading the reviews that say, `You've got to see it in 3-D,' and they're going out and voting with their dollars," said Don Harris, head of distribution at Paramount.

In narrower release, the Marilyn Monroe drama "My Week with Marilyn" opened solidly with a $1.8 million weekend and $2.1 million since opening Wednesday. The Weinstein Co. release stars Michelle Williams as Monroe during her tumultuous time filming Laurence Olivier's "The Prince and the Showgirl."

Playing in 244 theaters, "My Week with Marilyn" had a weekend average of $7,266 a cinema, compared with a $10,330 average in 4,066 locations for "Breaking Dawn."

Another Weinstein release, the black-and-white silent film "The Artist," had a big opening in limited release with a three-day haul of $210,414 in just four New York City and Los Angeles theaters. That gave the film an average of $52,604 a theater.

"The Artist" traces the fall of a silent-film star (Jean Dujardin) and the rise of a new screen sensation (Berenice Bejo) as talking pictures take over in the 1920s and `30s. The acclaimed film gradually expands to nationwide release during the buildup to the Oscar nominations.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1," $42 million ($71.5 million international).

2. "The Muppets," $29.5 million ($1.6 million international).

(AP) ? Democratic Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts announced his retirement Monday effective at the end of next year, closing out a congressional career of more than three decades capped by passage of legislation imposing new regulations on Wall Street.

Frank, 71 and a lifelong liberal, won a House seat in 1980 and was one of the first lawmakers to announce that he is gay.

At a news conference, Frank said he had originally intended to seek one more term but changed his mind in part because the state's new redistricting map will move 325,000 new constituents into his district.

He said he intends to remain active in public policy issues, including defending the so-called Dodd-Frank bill that he co-authored in the wake of the financial collapse of 2008.

"I think I will find my motives less impugned and I will be able to talk more about the merits," he said.

In a written statement, President Barack Obama paid tribute to Frank's "passion and quick wit." He praised the Massachusetts lawmaker's efforts to expand affordable housing, defend the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens and work to enact the "most sweeping financial reform in history."

Sixteen other Democrats have announced plans not to seek new House terms in 2012, compared with six Republicans.

As chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Frank was instrumental in passage of the Dodd-Frank bill, which contained the stiffest restrictions on banks and Wall Street since the Great Depression. The measure clamped down on lending practices and expanded consumer protections to prevent a repeat of the 2008 meltdown that knocked the economy to its knees.

Some Republicans have vowed to seek its repeal, although they are unlikely to succeed.

Over the years, Frank consistently came down on the liberal side of public issues, opposing the war in Iraq and bills to cover its expenses.

At his news conference, he acknowledged one error, his vote against President George H.W. Bush's request for support for a military campaign to force Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's withdrawal from oil-rich Kuwait.

The mission "worked well," Frank said in retrospect, saying he would have voted in favor had he known.

More than two decades ago, Frank was reprimanded by the House for using his congressional status on behalf of a male prostitute whom he had employed as a personal aide, including seeking dismissal of 33 parking tickets.

"I should have known better. I do now, but it's a little too late," Frank said at the time.

Democrats rebuffed Republican calls for Frank's expulsion, and instead, the Massachusetts Democrat resumed a career that far outlasted many of those who had sought his ouster.

Video: Online education redefining schools

LESTER HOLT, anchor: Back now with our Education Nation report and the growing number of schools across the country that are offering, some even requiring online classes for middle and high school students. In fact, some of these public schools exist completely online. We get our report tonight from our chief education correspondent Rehema Ellis .

REHEMA ELLIS reporting: It's time for school for Allison Schnacke .

Ms. ALLISON SCHNACKE: I wake up at eight, I eat breakfast. I go onto my school.

ELLIS: But for Allison class is right at home.

Ms. SCHNACKE: In the kitchen, on the table, in my room.

ELLIS: She and her brother Noah are enrolled full-time in the Florida Virtual School , an Internet-based public school . Virtual schools are expanding quickly for students from kindergarten to 12th grade, allowing them to take some or all f their classes from home.

Mr. JASON TORRES (Online Teacher): You can try unit one.

ELLIS: Online instructors can answer questions by email, phone, even video conference.

Mr. TORRES: It's providing them skills that they're going to need; time management and consistency in your work, communication with instructors.

ELLIS: And just like a student, some teachers do it right from home. Nationwide, 250,000 students are enrolled in full-time virtual schools, up 40 percent in the last three years. Thirty states offer a full-time online education to at least some students. Advocates say this technology is one way cash-strapped districts can save money. Variety and flexibility are also major draws.

Ms. JULIE YOUNG (Florida Virtual School): We don't believe that virtual schools are going to replace public schools . We believe they're going to change them.

ELLIS: Still, some question the effectiveness of online learning , saying more research needs to be done. Though programs do include teacher and student interaction, critics argue school is about more than just completing a lesson.

Mr. JONATHAN ZIMMERMAN (New York University): Schools historically in this country have existed not simply to teach people to read or to count, but also to teach them how to be citizens.

ELLIS: For the Schnackes , the ability to juggle school work around their busy schedules is part of the allure and the challenge.

Mr. NOAH SCHNACKE: You have to push yourself a lot harder because no one's here saying, 'You got to do it' and jamming it down your throat.

ELLIS: A new way of teaching and learning, redefining just what it means to go to school. Rehema Ellis, NBC News, New York.

Angelina Jolie: I'll Never "Be as Good" as My Own Mother (omg!)

Angelina Jolie: I'll Never "Be as Good" as My Own Mother

Angelina Jolie is a devoted mother of six, but the 36-year-old actress says she pales in comparison to her own mother Marcheline Bertrand, who passed away in 2007.

PHOTOS: Angelina's teenage modeling portfolio

"My mother was a full-time mother. She didn't have much of her own career, her own life, her own experiences," Jolie said on 60 Minutes Sunday. "Everything was for her children."

The 36-year-old actress-turned-director has three biological children with partner Brad Pitt: Shiloh, 5, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 3. They also have three adoptive children: Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, and Zahara, 6.

PHOTOS: Shiloh's adorable fashion choices

"I will never be as good a mother as she was. I will try my best, but I don't think I ever will be," Jolie said.

"She was the most generous, loving woman," she added, choking back tears. "She's better than me."

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Angelina Jolie meets with refugees in Malta

Jolie admitted that talking about her mother is her "soft spot," but she's grateful for the lessons Bertrand taught her about motherhood. She also hopes her mother would be proud of her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, which hits theaters December 23.

Suh says actions 'unacceptable' (AP)

DETROIT ? For the first season-and-a-half of his young career, Ndamukong Suh could almost brush off talk about his penalties and fines, saying he would keep doing what was needed to help his Detroit Lions.

After hurting the team with a penalty and ejection on Thanksgiving, Suh now says he has learned his lesson.

"My reaction on Thursday was unacceptable," the star defensive tackle said in a statement on his Facebook page Friday night. "I made a mistake, and have learned from it. I hope to direct the focus back to the task at hand ? by winning."

The statement appeared on Suh's page around the same time he was publically chastised by the Lions, one night after being ejected Thursday in a loss to Green Bay for stomping at an opposing player.

"The on-field conduct exhibited by Ndamukong Suh that led to his ejection from yesterday's game was unacceptable and failed to meet the high level of sportsmanship we expect from our players," the team said. "Ndamukong has made many positive contributions to the Lions on and off the field. We expect his behavior going forward to consistently reflect that high standard of professionalism."

It could be several days before Suh finds out the true cost of his third-quarter stomp in Detroit's 27-15 loss to the Packers on Thursday. An NFL spokesman said Friday that plays from Week 12 looked at for potential discipline won't be reviewed until all games are completed.

Detroit coach Jim Schwartz was curt after Thursday's defeat when asked if he was worried about a possible suspension.

"I'm worried about losing this game," Schwartz said.

Suh was dismissed after tangling with Packers offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith. After being pushed off Dietrich-Smith, Suh stepped down hard with his right foot, appearing to make contact with Dietrich-Smith's right arm.

Immediately after the game, Suh defended himself, saying he was trying to keep his balance while freeing himself from the brief scuffle. He publically apologized to teammates, coaches and fans Thursday for "allowing the refs to have an opportunity to take me out of this game," but he insisted he didn't intentionally step on anyone.

"People are going to have their own opinions ? that's fine," he said after the game. "The only (people) that I really care about are my teammates, my true fans and my coaches and their opinions, and that's where it lies. And honestly, the most important person in this whole thing that I have to deal with is the man upstairs."

In his Friday statement on Facebook, he said he'd had more time to reflect.

"Playing professional sports is not a game," he said. "It is a profession with great responsibility, and where performance on and off the field should never be compromised. It requires a calm and determined demeanor, which cannot be derailed by the game, referee calls, fans or other players."

In less than two seasons as a pro, Suh has established himself as one of the game's strongest and most athletic defensive linemen, but he's also received his share of fines.

Suh requested and received a meeting earlier this month with Commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss his play. He said that dialogue was helpful, but now the league will have to decide whether more discipline is merited after he was ejected on national television.

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan came up with one tongue-in-cheek solution Friday.

"I'll be honest with you, I think the young man, he should be released ... and come to the Jets," Ryan joked. "I'm just throwing that out there. I don't think he's that good of a player. I don't know about the incident and all that jazz, but we'll take him. We'll sacrifice that way."

Ryan then turned a little more serious.

"I don't even know what to say on it," Ryan said. "You've seen things like that happen on the field before. It's an emotional game."

Jets offensive lineman Matt Slauson, who played with Suh at Nebraska, sounded off on the topic Friday.

"Somebody needs to get him under control, because he's trying to hurt people," Slauson told the New York Post. "It's one thing to be an incredibly physical player and a tenacious player, but it's another thing to set out to end that guy's career."

Slauson said last year that he and Suh used to mix it up in practice while in college.

"There were times we got into fights, during spring ball, during camp, but I kind of fought everyone," Slauson said then.

In 2006, Albert Haynesworth, then with the Tennessee Titans, was suspended five games after swiping his cleats across the head of helmetless Dallas center Andre Gurode. Suh's stomp wasn't toward Dietrich-Smith's head, and the Green Bay player didn't seem too much worse for wear.

When asked afterward where Suh stepped on him, Dietrich-Smith sounded like he didn't want to stir the pot.

"I have no idea," he said. "I have to watch the tape."

If Suh is suspended early next week, he would have a chance to keep playing pending any appeal ? but that appeals process can be expedited. Detroit plays at New Orleans on Dec. 4.

The NFL moved that game to prime time, a reflection of the buzz surrounding the improved Lions this season. Led by young stars Suh, Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson, Detroit won its first five games, but the Lions have since lost four of six.

Defensive backs Louis Delmas, Chris Houston and Brandon McDonald went down with injuries against the Packers, and so did running back Kevin Smith. If the Lions are without Suh for an extended period, it could hurt them in the playoff race.

"He plays aggressive. All of us, sometimes, might overreact in certain situations," Detroit defensive lineman Cliff Avril said. "We've got to play real smart."
