New 'Green List' shows species on path to conservation success

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? The IUCN World Conservation Congress has adopted a motion sponsored by the Wildlife Conservation Society and partners to create a Green List to assess conservation success. The Green List for Species would include species identified as 'fully conserved,' which are those that exist in ecologically significant numbers, interacting fully with other species in their ecosystems.

The motion was adopted at the World Conservation Congress, which was held this month in Jeju, Republic of Korea.

The aim of the Green List is to highlight species that are thriving parts of a healthy ecosystem and will emphasize that conservation is about more than just preventing extinction.

"Successful species conservation involves the conservation of a species with significant populations, interacting fully with a complete suite of other native species and processes," said WCS President and CEO Dr. Cristi?n Samper. "The conservation community should be giving to the world a positive and proactive vision of success: ?species at or near their natural carrying capacity, as integral parts of fully functional ecosystems. The Green List will be a step in that direction."

The Green List will complement the IUCN Red List, which focuses on avoidance of extinction. The Red List has been critical in assessing conservation prioritization and has been a scientifically-rigorous tool highly regarded by governments and other conservation actors. To create the Green List to reach the same level of effectiveness, the motion recommends that IUCN conducts an international scientific consultation process to develop consensus and rigorous criteria.

Dr. Elizabeth Bennett, WCS Vice President of Species Conservation, said: "The Green List represents a positive vision for conservation in the future. It is a roadmap for species to follow on the way to full conservation recovery."

Dr. Simon Stuart, Chair of IUCN's Species Survival Commission, said: "The Green List process is about optimism and success. It will incentivize conservation action and encourage investment in programs and policies that enhance and measure conservation success and management effectiveness."

Thousands turn out on perfect day for Grape and Wine Festival Parade ? entertainment continues all weekend

ANNIE SILVESTER/Bullet News

A picture perfect day saw throngs of people line the streets of St. Catharines Saturday for the 61st annual Grape and Wine Festival Parade.

This year?s theme ?History Comes Alive? commemorated the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and was showcased with historical reenactments by actors in period attire as well as members of the First Nations marching at the beginning of the procession.

All the usual suspects dotted the streets as well, including majorettes, drum corps, floats, community groups and more.

Kimberly Hundertmark, executive director of the Niagara Grape and Wine Festival, was enthused about the day?s event that was expected to draw about 75,000 along the parade route.

?This is a grand tradition and people from far and wide across Ontario and Canada come out for this parade.? We have some amazing bands and this year we are introducing stand and show which is four different dance troops that are doing performances that they developed specifically for this event. We?re really excited about this year and everyone has really stepped up.?

Hundertmark says the parade is also great because it brings everyone together.

?I think it is a real recognition of our community spirit.? It?s the one time of the year that we really do come together here in Niagara.? We?re also celebrating an industry that is incredibly important to our economic sustainability and that is the grape and wine industry.?

Besides the parade itself Hundertmark says it has been a record breaking year with numbers.

?We had Platinum Blonde on opening night and they were amazing.? The talent on the WestJet stage has been really incredible.? The wine and culinary experiences in Montebello Park?again the partners are really delivering.?

Other aspects of the Grape and Wine celebration that continue throughout the weekend include the educational seminars in the park that feature Brock University and Niagara College students as well as the dairy farmers of Canada, cooking up a storm, instructing and pairing wines with foods.

One of the new elements added this year is the Buick Verano Caf? which is free fair trade coffees, lattes and cappuccinos in the park for folks who want something other than wine.

Says Hundertmark: ?We?re trying to make sure there is balance in the park so that everyone can enjoy.?

If you haven?t had a chance to visit the festival yet, there is still a lot to enjoy including a matinee disco party in the park today and lots of live music including Nik and the Nice Guys tonight.

Sunday will also be jammed packed full of activities and Burlington Band Walk Off the Earth who have recently shot to fame through You Tube will headline the evening?s music.

Bo decision allows China to focus on succession

BEIJING (AP) ? With disgraced politician Bo Xilai expelled from the party, his career effectively ended with a slew of criminal charges that are certain to result in convictions, China's ruling communists can finally focus on the crucial task of ensuring a smooth transition to a new generation of leaders.

On Friday, the party's decision-making Politburo finally took long-awaited action on the scandal that had loomed over Chinese politics for more than half a year, leveling criminal charges against Bo that range from corruption to sexual affairs to abetting the cover-up of a murder by his wife. At the same time, the 25-member Politburo also made the long overdue announcement of the opening of the party congress, now scheduled for Nov. 8, when President Hu Jintao will step down as party boss and Vice President Xi Jinping will succeed him.

The twin pronouncements are connected: Getting Bo out of the way was seen as crucial to healing rifts in the party and allowing Xi and a new leadership to come to power without the overhang of a messy scandal.

"Having settled this contentious issue, the party leadership is in a position to start the party congress with a facade of unity and also harmony," said Willy Lam, a political analyst at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Friday's announcement also came on the eve of National Day, which commemorates Mao Zedong's Oct. 1, 1949, declaration of victory in the country's civil war and the dawn of the People's Republic of China. Despite China's explosive economic growth and breakneck modernization since then, the events surrounding Bo's fall from grace show Mao's party remains very much the opaque and powerful force in Chinese political life.

"Again, this is politics overriding legal and judicial principles," Lam said, noting that the decision came from the Politburo convening behind closed doors instead of judges in an open court.

"The elite politics are still done" in secrecy, Lam said.

One of China's most ambitious and best-known politicians, Bo was brought down after a trusted aide disclosed that Bo's wife had murdered a British businessman. Bo was dismissed as party chief of the vibrant inland megacity of Chongqing; his wife, Gu Kailai, was given a suspended death sentence after confessing to the murder; and the aide, Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, received a 15-year prison term for initially covering up the murder and other misdeeds.

The charges against Bo, however, go much further, spanning more than a decade and including allegations that he took bribes, abused his power and had improper relationships with several women. Given the party's control of the courts, the indictment ensures the flamboyant 63-year-old's political career is finished.

The criminal proceedings against Bo are likely to start soon, with steps being taken to remove him from the National People's Congress, China's top legislature. Delegates to that body have immunity from arrest and prosecution.

As the son of a founding father of communist China, Bo grew up with a broad web of contacts within the party, government and military. Unlike most of the other members of the stiff and remote senior leadership, the telegenic Bo also was popular with the public, using a crackdown on organized crime in Chongqing to court publicity.

That also made him a polarizing figure among the party elite. In recent months, as speculation swirled about Bo's fate and the debate among top leaders dragged on, it is likely that his allies argued for the administrative equivalent of a slap on the wrist, while the top leadership represented by Hu, Vice President Xi and Premier Wen Jiabao saw Bo as a threat that needed to be eliminated.

The decision to level such a harsh punishment is a sign that the top leaders won out, once again, said Jeremy Paltiel, an expert on Chinese politics at Canada's Carleton University.

"My guess is that Hu and Wen wanted to crush Bo, not just smother him," Paltiel said. "They got their wish, even at the cost of a month's delay in the congress."

The state-run Global Times said in an editorial Saturday that it is in the people's fundamental interest for the party congress to convene smoothly and that the decisions about Bo provide certainty.

"It is conducive to the current situation and also to the accumulation of political certainty," the editorial read.

Bo is the first Politburo member to be purged and handed over to prosecutors since Hu ousted Shanghai party secretary Chen Liangyu in 2006 for corruption. Bo's case, however, was more politically divisive and delicate than Chen's, or any other recent case in which senior officials have been charged with corruption.

Ultimately, the decision on Bo was part of the overall horse-trading relating to the succession, said Steve Tsang, director of the China Policy Institute at the University of Nottingham in Britain.

"It probably means that as a result they negotiated something else that is better for the leadership succession," Tsang said.

Bo's removal is seen as strengthening Xi's position, leaving him the undisputed leader of the party's "princelings," as the offspring of high-ranking communist elders are known, and eliminating a challenger who had threatened party unity. He may face some opposition from Bo's supporters among party hard-liners, but Friday's announcement shows his influence was waning fast.

Friday's closed-door Politburo meeting also likely finalized other arrangements for the congress, including the much-contested lineup for the new leadership as well as for a commission that oversees the party's control of the military. Those decisions will be presented to the 204-member Central Committee ? a cross-section of the nation's political elite ? on Nov. 1 before being discussed a week later at the congress, which is a largely ceremonial event, approving decisions made earlier by the party's inner circle.

In trying to use the Bo case to rally the rank-and-file, the Politburo said Friday that bringing down such a high-level leader was proof of the party's determination to tackle the corruption that has damaged public confidence.

"Investigations must be thorough, firm and make no appeasement, no matter who is involved and how powerful they are, so no corrupt member will escape the punishment of party discipline and the nation's law," it said.

Targus Ultralife USB Hub with Ethernet Port

Buy an ultrabook lately? Then you may be frustrated with the fact that your ultrabook only has two USB ports, meaning you find yourself endlessly switch between peripheral devices. Enter the Targus Ultralife USB Hub with Ethernet Port ($39.99 direct), a portable hub that allows you to triple your ultrabook's USB connectivity. It's handsomely designed, highly portable, and even features an Ethernet port. Were it not for its lack of USB 3.0 connectivity, it would be the quintessential hub. It's still solid choice for anyone looking to expand their connectivity options.

Measuring 0.63 by 2.33 by 4.13 inches (HWD) and weighing a scant 2.88 ounces, the Ultralife is portable enough to fit comfortably in your pocket without adding any more heft than an average cell phone. While its compact chassis is constructed primarily out of plastic, its face is decked out in a handsome bronze finish, so it won't cramp your ultrabook's style when it sits to the side. Like the rest of the Ultralife line, a stylistic flair in the shape of a hole pierces the hub's body and, in turn, exposes the surface beneath which it sits. Make what you will of the hole, and even though it's a highly subjective matter of taste, it looks far more natural on a hub rather than, say, a mouse. The Ultralife's underside, meanwhile, is constructed out of black plastic. There aren't any grip feet, which means that the hub may slide around on smooth surfaces whenever it gets tugged between competing peripherals.

Unlike the Satechi 3.0 4-Port USB Hub , which plugs into your system via a detachable cable, the Ultralife Hub connects to your system via a tethered USB cable that measures roughly three inches in length. While three inches may not be enough for some, the length allows the cable to be neatly tucked into the hub on the side opposite the trio of USB 2.0 ports. In between the cable and the USB ports lies a full-size 10/100 Ethernet port. For owners of ultrabooks that don't come with a built-in Ethernet port, this feature alone may justify the price, especially for those who don't readily have access to a wireless network.

Since accessing the hub's trio of USB 2.0 ports first requires the tethered cable to be plugged into one of your system's USB ports, you effectively get a net gain of two USB 2.0 ports. The lack of USB 3.0 connectivity is undoubtedly the only drawback of the Ultralife Hub, and the primary distinction between the Ultralife Hub and the Satechi 3.0.

Setting up the Ultralife Hub simply requires plugging it into one of your system's USB ports. It works just as expected, and I experienced no performance degradation when transferring our 1.22GB test folder. Like the Satechi 3.0, the Ultralife Hub is compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems.

Overall, the Targus Ultralife USB Hub with Ethernet Port is a great choice for anyone looking to expand their USB 2.0 connectivity or who wants an Ethernet port in an attractively designed and highly portable package. The choice ultimately boils down to either the Satechi 3.0 and the Ultralife Hub. While both sport the same price tag, the Satechi 3.0 gives your system three additional USB 3.0 ports versus the Ultralife Hub's two additional USB 2.0 ports. The Ultralife Hub features an Ethernet port and, unlike the Satechi 3.0, doesn't require an external power supply, thereby making it far more portable. Still, we ultimately prefer function over form, and for that reason the Satechi 3.0 retains its edge over the Ultralife Hub.

US stock futures head lower on Spain worries

NEW YORK (AP) ? U.S. stock futures are down as investors fret over the economy of Spain, which this week announced big spending cuts it hopes will convince potential bailout creditors and investors that it has a rock-solid plan to heal its public finances.

Dow futures are down 49 points to 13,365. The broader S&P 500 futures are down 5 points to 1,436. Nasdaq futures are down 8 points to 2,807.

The positive momentum generated by Thursday's Spanish budget has ground to a halt as investors await more news, including stress test results into 14 banks due after European markets close. The Moody's rating agency is also expected to weigh in on Spain's creditworthiness.

Investors will also be looking at a U.S. report on August consumer spending, due at 8:30 a.m. EDT.

Male DNA found in female brains

Discovery suggests fetal cells can slip through blood-brain barrier

Web edition : Friday, September 28th, 2012

Children live on in their mothers? brains for decades, and not just as memories. Scientists have found pockets of male DNA, presumably from boy fetuses, in the brain tissue of women who died in their 70s.

Not only is male DNA present in women?s brains, it?s common, researchers report online September 26 in PLOS ONE. J. Lee Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle and her colleagues found snippets of a male-only gene in the brains of 18 of 26 women who died without neurological disease. The male DNA was spread throughout their brains.

The technique used in the study couldn?t distinguish if the DNA was from intact, functional brain cells, though in a separate test of brain tissue from a different woman, Nelson and colleagues did spot nuclei from male cells in the brain. Earlier studies in mice hinted that these foreign cells can integrate themselves into the brain and start functioning as nerve cells.

So far, cells from fetuses have turned up in women?s blood, livers, lungs, heart and other organs, so finding male DNA in the brain isn?t a complete shock, says geneticist Kirby Johnson of Tufts University in Medford, Mass., who wasn?t involved in the study. ?From everything we knew, it?s not really that surprising.?What?s interesting is how the DNA could have gotten there. Male cells from a fetus could have broken through the blood-brain barrier ? a wall that protects the fragile brain from pathogens in the blood. But that shouldn?t be possible, Johnson says.

If the male DNA did come from a fetus during pregnancy, then the genetic material stuck around in the brain for decades after that. The average age for these women at the time of their death was 70. ?Maybe these are with us for a lifetime,? Nelson says.

Presumably, mothers can also carry a daughter?s genetic material in their brains; the presence of a Y chromosome simply makes it easier to spot male DNA.

Complete medical records, including pregnancy history, weren?t available for the women in the study, which means the researchers couldn?t rule out sources of cellular mingling other than male fetuses. The male DNA could have come from a male twin whose cells ended up moving into his sister?s body during pregnancy, for instance, or they may have come from an organ donation or blood transfusion, or even an older brother who had previously occupied the same uterus as the women.

What?s more, cells from several generations could mingle in a single person. Because cells also flow from mother to fetus, a pregnant woman possesses cells from both her mother and her child, and that child could inherit his grandmother?s cells.

Fetal cells could be beneficial, harmful or innocuous in a mother?s body. In a follow-up experiment, the researchers found that women with Alzheimer?s had less foreign DNA in their brains than women with healthy brains, hinting that these cells might offer protection from the disease. Those results are too preliminary to be conclusive, Nelson says. In tissues outside the brain, there is preliminary evidence that fetal cells may affect risk for cancer and autoimmune diseases.?

2 more Somali journalists murdered; 1 is beheaded

(AP) ? One Somali journalist was shot dead by gunmen on Friday while a second journalist was beheaded and his body dumped in the street, officials and residents said, two attacks that bring the number of Somali journalists killed this year to 15.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the latest killings, but the deaths fit into a year-long pattern of targeted attacks against Somali journalists. Reporters must watch for attacks from militants and criminals and know that such deaths have been met with judicial inaction in a capital city with crippled government institutions.

Residents in an area just north of Mogadishu discovered the headless dead body of Abdirahman Mohamed Ali, a 26-year-old sports writer with his hands tied behind his back on Thursday. His body also showed signs of torture. No previous killing of a journalist has involved a beheading, and the method of death could be an indication that al-Qaida-linked militants from al-Shabab were responsible.

"His decapitated body was dumped near a restaurant. We were shocked to see his severed head placed on his chest," Ahmed Abdinur, a resident in the restive Suqa Holaha area, said by phone. "We don't know who beheaded him, but our village has seen several such headless bodies before."

Unidentified gunmen shot and killed Ahmed Abdulahi Fanah, a 32-year-old reporter who was working for the Yemeni news agency, the Somali journalists union said Friday. He was shot and killed as he walked out of his home on the way to work, it said.

The killings have made going to work a life-and-death decision for Somali journalists. One female television journalist said she won't risk her life any longer.

"I have decided to leave the country because the time we expected would bring peace and liberty has turned into the worst we have ever seen," Sahra Abdulahi Isse said. "The death threats have increased. ... I will be leaving for Uganda for my own safety."

Most of the 15 deaths appear to have been targeted killings, though last week three journalists were killed when a suicide bomber detonated explosives in a cafe popular with journalists and politicians. The day after that attack gunmen shot and killed another journalist.

Most of the killings have taken place in areas of Mogadishu nominally under the Somali government's control. Despite government promises of prosecutions, no arrests have yet been made for any of the killings in 2012.

"The terrible killings of two more journalists within the space of 36 hours makes clear that tackling the culture of impunity surrounding such atrocities can no longer wait," said Leslie Lefkow, deputy Africa director at Human Rights Watch. "The new president should make investigating the killings a priority, today."

Black Hawk Helicopter Trivia

Do you ever get asked to play Trivia? There are always questions that are asked and you respond ?I didn?t know that!?. This article is about the Black Hawk Helicopter and some basic trivia for all of us to know.

This sleek machine is a four blade, twin engine aircraft manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. It has two T700 GE engines on it and costs between 5 and 21 million dollars. At this price not everyone will be able to purchase more than one. The Black Hawk was chosen by the US Army over the Boeing Vertol YUH-61 and entered service in 1979. However the first flight was on Nov. 29, 1974. There were a total of 4000 units built. There are 4 versions of the helicopter, including a VIP version (VH-60N) that is used for government officials. This includes ?Marine One? on which the President travels.

In 1987 the engines were upgraded to the T700 GE engines and the external lift capacity increased from 8000 lbs to 9000 lbs. This modified version (UH-60) was used in the Osama bin Laden mission in 2011. This version also included a modified tail section with extra blades on the tail rotor along with other modifications to reduce noise. There was also technology that was used to allow it to avoid the Pakistan Air Force radars.

A UH-60 Black Hawk can carry up to 11 troops and their equipment. It can carry 10,000 lbs of rockets, missiles or gun pods.

The Black Hawk is not only owned by the United States of America. There are several other countries that have acquired these powerful aircraft. Colombia uses their UH-60?s to combat drug and guerrilla organizations. Mexico uses their units for drug trafficking. The Republic of China purchased the UH-60?s for search and rescue missions. Turkey and United Arab Emirates also procured their units through a Foreign Military Sale.

As you can see there is a lot of interesting Trivia to learn about the Black Hawk Helicopter. The fun part of this is that you can own and fly one if you desire. Through the vast world of RC Helicopters you too can fly this big bird. In summary here are a few facts that you might want to keep in mind just in case your asked that question:

Crew: 2 pilots, Length: 64 feet 10 inches, Rotor diameter: 53 feet 8 inches, Height: 16 feet 10 inches, Empty weight: 10,624 lbs, Loaded weight: 22,000 lbs, Never exceed speed: 193 knots (222 mph, 357 km/h), Cruise speed: 150 kt (173 mph, 278 km/h).

Now you can say ?I know that!? Enjoy.

Conservatives Fund backs Akin in Mo. Senate bid

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? A conservative fundraising group backed embattled Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin with as much as $290,000 for his campaign Thursday. But Akin handed new fundraising fodder to his foes by suggesting that Sen. Claire McCaskill had behaved in a less "ladylike" manner than she has in the past.

Akin contrasted McCaskill's demeanor in their first debate last week with her approach six years ago.

"She was very aggressive in the debate, which was quite different than the way she was when she ran against Jim Talent" in 2006, Akin said during a campaign stop Thursday at the state capitol. At that time, he added, "she had a confidence and was very much more sort of ladylike and all."

Akin's comment came moments after the Senate Conservatives Fund announced it was endorsing him. It was the highest-profile financial commitment Akin has netted since his campaign lost millions of dollars of planned advertising by other national groups that aid Republicans. Those groups withdrew their support after Akin remarked last month that women's bodies have ways of averting pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape."

Akin has apologized repeatedly since then but defied demands from top Republicans ? including presidential nominee Mitt Romney ? to quit the race. He's hoping his campaign can gain momentum now that he has let pass Tuesday's final deadline to drop out of the race. But staying in the contest has left Romney, running mate Paul Ryan and the rest of the GOP hierarchy in an awkward position.

The "ladylike" comment complicated Akin's efforts and the broader contest for control of the Senate. Republicans need to gain four seats to win the majority, a task that seemed within reach a few months ago but has now grown uncertain, in part because of Akin's campaign.

At the Missouri Capitol on Thursday, Akin said he believes he will get the votes of Republicans and Romney supporters and defeat McCaskill, who has close ties to President Barack Obama. Akin said thinks McCaskill believes he can win, too. He cited as evidence McCaskill's demeanor in a Missouri Press Association debate Sept. 21, contrasting it with the way she debated then-Sen. Jim Talent in 2006.

"In the debate we had Friday, she came out swinging, and I think that's because she was threatened," Akin said.

McCaskill's campaign did not immediately comment about the remark, but others quickly denounced it. Washington Sen. Patty Murray, who is chairwoman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, called it "demeaning to women and offensive to all."

Emily's List, which backs Democratic candidates who support abortion rights, quickly incorporated the remark into an email fundraising plea to finance more TV ads against Akin.

"Ladylike?! This is a Senate race, not a beauty pageant, Todd," the group's new media director Emily Lockwood said in the email.

The Senate Conservatives Fund said it endorsed Akin because he is the Republican nominee, the race against McCaskill remains competitive and Missouri is important to Republican efforts to gain the four seats necessary to win control of the Senate. The organization said its members had pledged $290,000 toward Akin's campaign, and it hopes to get $100,000 to Akin by Sunday, which is the cutoff for the quarterly financial reporting period.

Akin said he was thankful and "very enthusiastic" about winning the group's support.

"I think it's logical_I am a conservative, they're conservatives, I think it's a common-sense type of thing," Akin said.

The fund has gained prominence in recent years with the aid of Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., a favorite among tea party activists. Among other things, the Senate Conservatives Fund supports a ban on congressional spending earmarks, which use legislation to direct particular amounts of money to specific entities in a particular state or congressional district.

Akin has used earmarks in the past to direct funding to such things as highway projects and military armor, although he and Matt Hoskins, the executive director of the Senate Conservatives Fund, both have said Akin supports the group's ban on earmarks.

Akin said Thursday that he's against amendments that are slipped into bills at the last moment that direct money to specific projects, particularly if joint House and Senate conference committees add items that weren't in versions that originally passed the chambers. But he added: "Don't take the definition (of earmark) so broadly that the members of Congress don't have any input into the budget process."

The aid from the Senate Conservatives Fund follows Akin's endorsement Wednesday by DeMint and former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, whose Patriot Voices political action committee said it was contributing money to Akin and hiring staff to work in Missouri. The Freedom's Defense Fund, which backs conservative candidates, also said earlier this week that it planned a $250,000 advertising campaign benefiting Akin.

But Akin will need even more outside help to keep pace with Democratic-leaning groups supporting McCaskill.

Emily's List and the Service Employees International Union issued a joint statement Thursday saying they had bought $1 million in ads in support of McCaskill to run in the state's largest TV markets.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which already has spent about $1 million on TV ads in Missouri, has reserved $4.3 million of additional advertising to begin running Oct. 9.
