Eve Discusses Her Interracial Relationship and Dodging The Bullet ...

Source: WENN

Eve has not been on the radar quite as much as she used to be, partly because she?s found love and skipped town. According to Necolebitchie.com, the ?34-year-old rapper and actress has moved to London with boyfriend of three years, Maximillion Cooper, who just so happens to be White. Her move to the UK does not stop her from coming back to the States and visiting from time to time. Yesterday, during her visit to New York the Barbershop actress opened up about her relationship in a very interesting interview with Hot97?s Angie Martinez. She discussed some of the backlash she received over ?dating interracially, her love for Black men, and the train-wreck known as Stevie J. Check out what she had to say.

On the backlash she?s received over her interracial relationship

I need them to stop. What year is it? Like, stop. Seriously. Trust me, I gotta say, it is weird for me that I?m with a white dude. Trust me. I look at him sometimes and I?m like, ?You are so white.? Seriously! Yes, I gotta be real like that. I?m the first black girl he?s ever been with, so we are learning. Trust me, he?s been through ?Weave 101.? I?ve been out?on a date but not like this, not like my dude. I had to tell my mom and my step-dad who still thinks he follows Farrakhan. It?s crazy. We learn a lot about each other but people came at me like, ?I can?t believe you?re dating a white dude and you don?t like black dudes no more.? I?m like, ?I love black men, it just so happens that my heart went this way right now.? Who knows? I?m happy? My family?s happy. [My pops] is cool. He still keeps calling him ?my friend.? [He says], ?How?s your friend?? Like, it?s been almost three years.

On loving Black men

People came at me. Now it?s better, like when I started sending?pictures?or people started seeing?pictures?on Twitter, people really came at me hard, but now it?s fine. Like I said, I do look at him like, I can?t believe I?m with a white dude. I don?t let him dance. I tell him, ?Look like a pimp, I will dance around you.? He can do a lot of things, but he can?t dance.

On Stevie J and Love & Hip Hop Atlanta?

I have not seen it, I?ve never?watched?it. I cannot allow myself but trust me, people give me updates. I was young and dumb. The first?person?that said something to me was my mother, she text me and said, ?You dodged a bullet with that one? and we?ve never talked about it again.

Eve?s mom was dead on. The rapper certainly has dodged a major bullet and what?s even better is she?s found happiness and love with someone else.

For some feathered dinosaurs, bigger not necessarily better

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Every kid knows that giant carnivores like Tyrannosaurus rex dominated the Cretaceous period, but they weren't the only big guys in town. Giant plant-eating theropods ? close relatives of both T. rex and today's birds ? also lived and thrived alongside their meat-eating cousins. Now researchers have started looking at why dinosaurs that abandoned meat in favor of vegetarian diets got so big, and their results may call conventional wisdom about plant-eaters and body size into question.

Scientists have theorized that bigger was better when it came to plant eaters, because larger digestive tracts would allow dinosaurs to maximize the nutrition they could extract from high-fiber, low-calorie food. Therefore, natural selection may have favored increasing body sizes in groups of animals that went meatless.

Three groups of giant feathered theropods from the Cretaceous period seemed to follow that rule of thumb ? the biggest specimens were also the plant-eaters. Lindsay Zanno, research assistant professor of biology at North Carolina State University and director of the Paleontology & Geology Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and Peter Makovicky, associate curator of paleontology at the Field Museum in Chicago, decided to see if diet was the determining factor when it came to size. Makovicky notes that "Having three closely related lineages of dinosaurs adapting to herbivory over the same geological time span and showing evidence of increasing size provided a near perfect test case."

Zanno and Makovicky estimated body mass for 47 extinct species of feathered dinosaur, representing three major groups that abandoned a strictly meat-eating diet ? ornithomimosaurs ("bird-mimics"), oviraptorosaurs ("egg-thieves"), and the bizarre therizinosaurs ("scythe-lizards"). Most species in these lineages also possessed a toothless beak, three-toed feet, and shorter tails than your average dinosaur, making them look a lot like modern birds.

All three groups evolved gigantic proportions: the largest oviraptorosaur weighed over 7,000 pounds, and the biggest ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs topped out at over 13,000 pounds. "The largest feathered dinosaurs were more than 100 times more massive than your average person," says Zanno. "The reality is that for most of us, it is downright difficult to imagine a feathered animal of gigantic proportions."

The researchers also found that average body mass did increase in these groups over time (on average, the earliest members were smallest and the last species to evolve were among the largest). But this simple correlation didn't indicate whether large size was an evolutionary advantage.

To test whether these groups were being driven to get bigger by natural selection, Zanno and Makovicky fitted different evolutionary models to the data, looking to see which model best described the patterns of body mass from ancestor species to descendant species. They found that these theropod groups were experimenting with different body masses as they evolved, with some getting bigger, while others were getting smaller. In short, there was no clear-cut drive to get big ? size seemed to provide no overwhelming advantage during the evolution of these animals.

The researchers' results appear in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

"Results of our study don't rule out diet as affecting body mass, but do seem to indicate that fluctuating environmental conditions over time were trumping the benefit of becoming a giant," Zanno says. "The long and short of it is that for plant-eating theropods, bigger wasn't always better."

"Where resources permitted, these animals could get as big as elephants, but that clearly was not the case in all environments and time periods," says Makovicky. "Factors such as resource abundance and competition with other herbivores likely played a more significant role." He added that uneven sampling in the fossil record, such as preferential preservation of smaller species in earlier time periods and larger species in later ones, could also impact the results.

92% Skyfall

All Critics (276) | Top Critics (45) | Fresh (253) | Rotten (23)

'Quantum of Solace,' was a dour, dire letdown. This picture's a substantial bounce back, and easily the best Craig Bond picture. Emotional depth and all.

Sam Mendes' 'Skyfall': sleek, slithery, sensual

The cool accomplishment of Skyfall, 23rd in the Broccoli franchise, is that it seems a necessary, rather than mandatory, addition to the year's popular culture.

Among the most ambitious imaginings of Bond to date: dark, supple, and punctuated with moments of unanticipated visual brilliance.

Mendes' approach to action is classical and elegant - no manic editing and blurry unintelligible images here - but what makes the movie special is the attention he pays his actors.

"Skyfall" is a different kind of Bond movie, one that works just fine on its own terms, but a steady diet of this might kill the franchise. One "Skyfall" is enough.

Sentimental touches underscore the fun and frivolity of Bond's past while relishing the brutal landscape of the modern day super-spy.

This makes the list of truly great 007 films alongside the list of Goldfinger, Thunderball, Live And Let Die, Licence To Kill, Goldeneye and Casino Royale.

Worlds collide in this near-brilliant, meticulously refined 21st-century redefinition of James Bond.

Sam Mendes has done a magnificent job, creating both a relevant and timeless entry into the Bond canon, while deftly adding homages to the series' past.

...tough and grim but still spry ... feels like something of a rearguard action in the case of the British Empire.

Sometimes the old ways are the best. This is a theme and repeated line running throughout the new James Bond film Skyfall and never has it been more true.

Skyfall does what all of the best franchise entries do: it makes you want to see the next one immediately. Consider me (physically) shaken and (emotionally) stirred.

Not the best Bond movie ever but a very good one; a little darker but still unsettled as to what type overall it wants to be.

Too often this martini is sloppy, not smooth.

This is one of the 50-year-old series' most exciting and commandingly compelling entries. Yes, James Bond is back to being James Bond.

Seen against the ineffectual backdrop of 2008's Quantum of Solace, this is a return to form but it doesn't exceed Craig's impressive debut as Bond in 2006's Casino Royale.

Skyfall is not, of course, ''darker'' or more serious than previous Bond films, but it's more knowing about its own conventions.

Breathes fresh life into the genre.

A lot of critics are claiming this to be the best Bond film ever made; they may well be right-to some degree. It's certainly the most poignant-which, in what is ostensibly an action film, is a feather in Mendes' cap to be sure.

James Bond's 23rd official feature film gives the iconic secret agent something to stew over: an existential crisis.

Suffers from unconvincing plotting, and a third act so bad it brings the roof of the whole endeavour caving in

Even die-hard Sean Connery fans will have to admit there's another actor who can portray James Bond when they see 'Skyfall.'

Mendes does a superb job maintaining tension - and releasing it from time to time so we can take a breath, have a laugh, sit back from the edge of our seat - as he shows how seriously the James Bond character can be taken, without breaking it

Establishing a sense of urgency from the outset, the 23rd Bond film hits its tall target with a bonus back-story, character establishment and strong storyline to balance the action. As a consequence, we are offered a film that is uniquely Bond

Genome Canada's Pierre Meulien on the Power and Promise of Genomics

A decade ago the relatively new science of genomics in Canada saw 2 important events. One was an event organized by the Gairdner Foundation that brought together some of the best scientists and researchers in genomics. The other was the creation of Genome Canada, a not-for-profit organization that brings together partners from academic, industry, and government sectors to initiate and manager large scale genomics project.
This week the Gairdner Foundation and Genome Canada have come together to hold another landmark genomics event which once again brings together some of the best minds in the genomics field. Genomics: The Power and the Promise ?was held at the Ottawa Convention Centre and featured names like Eric Lander, Svante Paabo, Michael Hayden, Elizabeth Edwards, Bartha Knoppers and many more.
I've been fortunate to be able to interview top researchers in the biotechnolgy field at several of the annual conferences hosted by the Biotechnology Industry Organization in the U.S. and for the Power and Promise I have once again taken BioRadio on the road and talked to several of the people attending the event.
Today's first interview was with Pierre Meulien, CEO and President of Genome Canada and I started off by asking him what were some of the highlight from the first morning.
Here's the rest of the interview.

Texas officials take steps to seize polygamist sect's ranch

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Texas officials on Wednesday filed legal documents to seize a 1,600-acre West Texas ranch where officials say jailed polygamist leader Warren Jeffs sexually assaulted children.

The state attorney general's office filed a search and seizure warrant and an affidavit in state District Court in Schleicher County over the YFZ (Yearning for Zion) Ranch in Eldorado, Texas. The attorney general's office says Jeffs had sought a remote location for a polygamist compound where he and other members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints could sexually assault children without interference from law enforcement.

Jeffs, 56, is in prison in Texas after being sentenced to life plus 20 years in 2011 on sexual assault convictions related to his marriages with two underage sect girls. Despite incarceration, Jeffs is said to remain in control of the sect.

The sect practices polygamy in arranged marriages and has an estimated 10,000 followers in North America. It shares religious roots with the Salt Lake City-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but the mainstream Mormon church denounced polygamy in 1890 as a condition of Utah's statehood and does not affiliate with the FLDS or any other polygamist sect.

The state of Utah has taken over the assets of a communal land trust once run by Jeffs, and a federal appeals court ruled earlier this month that the trust should not be turned back to sect leaders.

The Hunt for a Better Butter Churn

A woman churns butter in 1893. A woman churns butter in 1893

Photo by W. Braybrooke Bayley/Wikimedia Commons.

A few years ago, on a lark, I decided to make butter. This sounds like it might be some kind of arduous, gourmand pursuit, but it was quite simple. Following chef Daniel Patterson?s instructions, I bought a whole lot of cream and poured it into my trusty KitchenAid mixer, whose top I?d covered in plastic wrap to prevent splashing all over my kitchen. I turned the mixer on high. Ten or so minutes later, I had curds and real buttermilk. I separated the two in a sieve then squeezed the curds by hand to form a mass of butter. I rolled it out into a log and covered it in plastic. In a little more time than it takes to make eggs and toast, I?d made enough butter to last for weeks.

I never did it again. Sure, as Patterson had promised, my homemade butter was delicious, just about the best butter I?d ever tasted. (I am an expert on the taste of butter; ask my wife or my doctor.) But it was also extremely expensive?I?d spent nearly $10 in high-end cream to make about a pound of butter, which is about $4 more than I?d have spent to buy very nice butter made from the same fancy dairy that had produced my cream. For doing the work myself, I?d paid 67 percent more. And even if I?d bought cheaper cream, I couldn?t have come close to matching the price (not to mention the convenience) of store-bought butter. (Jennifer Reese comes to the same conclusion in Make the Bread, Buy the Butter, her awesome book about what you should and shouldn?t bother making at home.)

I got to thinking about my butter-making adventure when, as part of the Reader Takeover project, readers asked me to ?review the most nontech gadgets you can think of?turn-of-the-century butter churns, cotton gins, trebuchets, etc!? (Thanks, you guys!) Let me start by confessing that I didn?t actually get hold of any of these things, so you will not hear me pass judgment on what features you should look for in a siege weapon this holiday season. I did, however, spend a lot of time researching and thinking about all of the energy and ingenuity humans have applied to the problem of making butter. As a result, I gained new respect both for butter (which I didn?t think possible) and for our ancestors, especially the women and children who spent many long hours every week turning cream into butter.

But the most interesting thing I discovered about churns was how little they, er, churned over the years. To someone used to the relentless pace of change in modern gadgetry, the difference between the earliest butter churns and the latest churns?by which I mean, the difference between how people made butter in the 1700s and how they made butter in the 1940s?seems hopelessly small. Butter is formed when the membranes surrounding fat globules in cream are stripped through the process of physical agitation; this allows the fat to clump together into a single mass, i.e., butter. Thus all churns work the same way?they transfer human power into physical agitation within a vessel holding cream?and that?s why they never really advanced until humans found a feasible alternative to human power. Until industrialization came along, all churning was the same: You spent minutes or hours plunging or cranking a shaft until, at some point you couldn?t quite predict, long after you felt your arms were about to fall off, butter began to form.

Churning butter with old-fashioned dasher churn, creamery, East Aurora, NY, 1905. Churning butter with old-fashioned dasher churn, East Aurora, N.Y., 1905.

Keystone View Co./Library of Congress.

The slow pace of progress in churns was not for lack of trying. Because making butter was so arduous and time-consuming, it was an active area of commercial invention. According to the Encyclopedia of Kitchen History, inventors filed for 2,500 patents on better butter churns around the time of the Industrial Revolution. Doug & Linda?s Dairy Antique Site collects many of these patents and photos of churns over time. If you follow the timeline, you?ll notice lots of minor advances. For instance, before the mid-1800s or so, most people did not quite understand that the efficiency of churning depended on the temperature of the cream you were using; if the cream was too cold, butter wouldn?t form. The fact that you could sometimes churn and churn forever and still not see any butter sparked a great deal of superstition around butter-making. As Doug & Linda?s site explains:

Many times the cream would not form butter no matter how long one churned it. Many people felt that this was because the cream was haunted by a witch. Many people that churned butter believed in the "cream witch" and many churn advertisements referred to it. A couple of the remedies for a cream witch was to put a red hot horse shoe or a red hot poker into the cream. The cream would boil as the hot metal was put in the churn and people said this was the noise of the witch thrashing about as she was killed. In actuality the temperature of the cream was increased and often this was enough for the butter to start to form.

Around 1850, someone invented a ?thermometer churn,? which featured two adjacent metallic chambers. You put your cream in one chamber, and in the second you added hot or cold water to raise or lower the cream?s temperature. (A thermometer mounted on the front let you know which to add.) Suddenly, thanks to a brilliant design change, the cream witch was dead.

OK, North Korea's Leader Isn't 'Sexiest Man Alive,' Chinese Media Concede

NPR Shanghai correspondent Frank Langfitt sends in an update on one of this week's more amusing stories:

China's Web surfers have had a lot to say about how People's Daily Online ? the internet version of the Communist Party's mouthpiece ? got fooled into republishing a "story" by The Onion that declared North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is 2012"s "sexiest man alive."

On China's increasingly free-wheeling internet, thousands of users have ripped the state-run news site for falling for the joke.

"With such a low IQ, how can we expect People's Daily to represent the People?" one person wrote on Sina Weibo, China's most popular, Twitter-like site.

"Actually, People's Daily and The Onion are the same," wrote another.

It didn't help that People's Daily Online improved on the fake story by adding a real, 55-image, photo gallery of the cherubic dictator, including one of him appearing rakish on horseback.

But if you want to see the People's Daily's version for yourself, sadly, you can't anymore. People's Daily took the story down Wednesday morning.

"We have realized it is satirical," an editor who works on the site's South Korea channel told The Associated Press.

The Onion, naturally, had nothing but praise for the People's Daily Online.

"We are pleased that one of our many fine Communist subsidiaries, the People's Daily in China, has received accolades for its coverage of our Sexiest Man Alive announcement," Onion editor Will Tracy says, with tongue firmly planted in his cheek, in a statement sent to news outlets. "The People's Daily has served as one of the Onion's Far East bureaus for quite some time, and I believe their reportage as of late has been uncommonly fine, as well as politically astute. May our felicitous business association continue for centuries to come."

Co-Chair of Simpson-Bowles Commission Gives 1/3rd Probability of Deal on 'Fiscal Cliff'

Erskine Bowles, co-chairman of the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles commission assembled by the White House to deal with the national debt, said he believes that there's only a one-in-three probability that Congress will reach an agreement on the so-called fiscal cliff before the Dec. 31 deadline.

"We have a real crisis, and I think it would be insane to reach the fiscal cliff, but I think that there's only a one-third probability of Congress getting something done before Dec. 31," Bowles said. "You all know what it means if we don't, if we go over the cliff - I think you'll see economic growth slowed by as much as 3 to 5 percent. That's obviously enough to put us back into a recession."

Bowles was a bit more upbeat about the chances for a deal after the deadline passes.

"I'm certain we'll get it done in the lame duck" session of Congress, he said. "I think it's about one third that we'll go over the cliff and people will come to their senses pretty quickly. But I think the real problem is if we go over the cliff and we don't do anything immediately, and that's also a one-third probability."

Get more pure politics at ABCNews.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com

Bowles, a Democrat who served as President Clinton's chief of staff in 1997-8, was joined at a Wednesday morning briefing by his debt reduction partner, former Senator Alan Simpson, a Republican.

In 2010 Simpson and Bowles were asked by President Obama to head a commission to find policies that could "achieve fiscal sustainability over the long run." The two men delivered a report, commonly referred to as the Simpson-Bowles plan, that failed in a Congressional vote to get a formal endorsement. Neither man is seen as having a dog in the fight, so to speak, regarding a deal on the fiscal cliff. They are a bipartisan team, and neither works in the public sector anymore. So their outlook is seen as sobering.

Bowles said he that he believes that the White House is "absolutely serious" about getting something done, but said he wished that they had started tackling the problem earlier.

"If we go over the cliff, you have bet the country," he said.

Later today Bowles and Simpson head to Capitol Hill to meet with Speaker Boehner and House Republicans.

On a lighter note, the men were asked why their panel was called "Simpson-Bowles" and not "Bowles-Simpson." Simpson explained: "Because the acronym for Bowles-Simpson is not appropriate."

New understanding of X chromosome inactivation

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? In a paper published in the Nov. 21 issue of Cell, a team led by Mauro Calabrese, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina in the lab of Terry Magnuson, chair of the department of genetics and member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, broadens the understanding of how cells regulate silencing of the X chromosome in a process known as X-inactivation.

"This is a classic example of a basic research discovery. X-inactivation is a flagship model for understanding how non-coding RNAs orchestrate large-scale control of gene expression. In the simplest terms, we are trying to understand how cells regulate expression of their genes. Our findings are relevant across the board -- by understanding how normal cells function we can apply that knowledge to similar situations in the understanding and treatment of disease," said Calabrese.

Proper regulation of the X chromosome plays a crucial role in mammalian development. Females inherit a pair of X chromosomes from their parents, and the process of X-inactivation shuts down one of these two Xs.

"Males have XY. Females have two Xs. One of those Xs needs to get shut off. If it does not, it's not compatible with life. It's how we have evolved to equalize doses between males and females," said Calabrese.

While the manner in which the X chromosome is deactivated has been actively studied for 50 years, the exact mechanisms that regulate the process remain a mystery. Calabrese's research used high-throughput sequencing to determine the location and activity of chromosomes with far greater accuracy than previous research.

"Basically, this is using the sequencing technology as a high resolution microscope," said Calabrese.

Under a microscope, the inactive X chromosome (Xi) appears as a cloud-like structure, because it is covered with a non-coding RNA known as Xist. In the traditional model of X-inactivation, genes located inside the cloud are completely silenced, with 15 percent of the genes from the inactive X chromosomes escaping to become active.

"The prevailing thought was that genes that escaped X inactivation were pulled out of the core and expressed out there," said Calabrese.

The work of Calabrese's team complicates the current model of X-inactivation by finding indications of gene activity inside the Xist cloud and the presence of inactive genes outside the cloud, both of which would not have been thought possible in the prevailing model.

"It's kind of a subtle thing, but mechanistically it is a big difference," said Calabrese.

Inside the Xist cloud, sequencing discovered traces of DNase I sensitivity, a feature usually linked to transcription activity. While other markers associated with transcription were absent, the presence of DNase I sensitivity suggested that the nucleus did recognize the inactive X as usable DNA, but an unknown suppressive mechanism was preventing genes from being activated.

"We were surprised to see that. If they were totally silent, you would expect this to be not there? This suggests that transcription factors or other proteins that bind DNA are still accessing the inactive X," said Calabrese.

The other surprising findings involve the 15 percent of "escaper" genes from the inactive X. Calabrese found evidence that active genes were found both inside and outside the Xist cloud, and that silenced genes that lay alongside active genes outside of the Xist cloud remained inactive.

"If X-inactivation was a strict nuclear barrier, then pulling a gene outside the barrier would turn it on, but it has got to be more than that because when an inactivated gene that is beside an escaper is outside this domain, it is still turned off," said Calabrese.

The presence of DNase I sensitivity within the Xist cloud and the finding of inactive genes outside of the cloud suggest that a site-specific mechanism is regulating genes on the chromosome in a more subtle way than the binary "on/off" function posited by the prevailing model. The exact mechanism for this remains unknown. Although Calabrese believes that Xist still plays a role, its exact function and whether other factors influence X-inactivation remain questions for future research.

"We know that Xist is required to turn off the inactive X. We know that. We have no idea how" said Calabrese.

Beyond revising the understanding of how X-inactivation works, Calabrese said that deeper understanding of the function of Xist could reveal more about the role of other non-coding RNAs in cellular development. These RNAs could become useful targets for future therapies and drug development.

"We know that too much expression of the wrong non-coding RNAs can lead to cancer. Also, forced expression of other non-coding RNAs can prevent cancer. Generally, we do not know how these RNAs work," said Calabrese.

Dumaguing: Should a woman have hormone replacement therapy ...

FIRST and foremost, this author would like to apologize to our dear readers and friends for the delay of the appearance of this article, which for all the high-tech advantages of computers and gadgets, got lost in transit. At any rate, it is our fervent hope that the delay has not at all, diminished the enthusiasm and interest of our beloved women of menopausal age, including their anxious husbands.

Our health columnist-colleague Ms. Sara T. Poumerol says that doctors prescribe HRT for two major reasons; relief of menopausal complaints, in which treatment is given for two to three years and then tapered off; and/or protection against osteoporosis and other long term ailments. Women have a variety of treatments from which to choose.

Women who have had hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) together with her two ovaries are often given estrogen therapy. Otherwise, most women use a combination of two hormones (estrogen and progesterone) to counter the negative effect of estrogen on the uterus. Relief of urogental signs and symptoms is also available in estrogen vaginal suppositories, cream and the so-called vaginal ring.

Today, doctors and psychologists as well as marriage counselors understand the more complex nature of the maintenance of libido (sexual urge and desire) of women, even in their menopausal stage. Female sexual urges, as well as the male libido is activated by male sex hormones or androgens. Women naturally produce androgens during their 20s and 30s ? more than their output of estrogens. A new formulation that combines male and female hormones (estrogen-androgen combination) replaces the lost androgens in menopausal women providinga big boostto their sexual drive and a significant improvement in their mood and energy level, thus improving their quality of life. Also, as compared to estrogen alone, the estrogen-androgen combinationmay better protect against ospteoporosis because androgens are important for maintaining bone density.

Some researchers have shown that when taken for over five years, HRT might boost a woman?s chance of getting breast cancer by 30 to 40%. The data so far are not compelling nor consistent for a strong link between HRT and breast cancer. At that time, the medical world recommended against prescribing conventional HRT for women at high risk for breast cancer (if she has a mother, sister or daughter with premenopausal breast cancer.

Nowadays, the thinking and the attitude has changed. Many medical societies have discovered that based on experience and research, the benefits of HRT greatly outweighed the risks, unless the woman has two family relatives with breast cancer. Besides, some researchers believe that estrogen may actually benefit women who have already survivedbreast cancer.

As a personal rejoinder, this author strongly advise every woman, of menopuasal vintage, to consult their family physician and make informed co decisions before their consent is given to undergo hormone replacement therapy.

A/C's ultrasonic waves shoo away mosquitoes

13 hrs.

Even in the cold darkness of winter, a hot muggy mosquito infested day sounds miserable. Thankfully, there?s now an air conditioner that doubles as a mosquito repellent. The repellent comes in the form of ultrasonic waves, which make a sound that drives away the pesky insects.

The high-tech gizmo from LG Electronics sounds like a must-get for the wealthy Florida retiree on your holiday shopping list, but it?s intended as a potential game-changer for parts of Africa where malaria, a mosquito-transmitted disease, is a major public health threat.

In tests, the unit deterred 64 percent of malaria-transmitting mosquitoes within 24 hours and 82 percent overall.

The company even took Africa?s notoriously unreliable power supplies into consideration as it designed the Anti-Mosquito air conditioner. It is outfitted with technology meant to withstand the electric current fluctuations associated with repeated blackouts and extreme operating conditions.

Yes, air conditioners are a relative luxury, but with research on anti-malaria vaccines stumbling and low-cost mosquito nets becoming less effective, an air conditioning unit that shoos away a good portion of the deadly mosquitoes today is that much cooler.

Washington State Declares War on Ocean Acidification

The state, a leading U.S. producer of farmed shellfish, has launched a $3.3-million, science-based plan to address this growing problem for the region and the globe

Washington state, the leading US producer of farmed shellfish, today launched a 42-step plan to reduce ocean acidification. The initiative ? detailed in a report by a governor-appointed panel of scientists, policy-makers and shellfish industry representatives ? marks the first US state-funded effort to tackle ocean acidification, a growing problem for both the region and the globe.

The state governor Christine Gregoire,? says she will allocate $3.3 million to back the panel's priority recommendations.

?Washington is clearly in the lead with respect to ocean acidification,? says Jane Lubchenco, administrator of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

As growing carbon dioxide gas emissions have dissolved into the world?s oceans, the average acidity of the waters has increased by 30% since 1750. Washington, which produces farmed oysters, clams and mussels, is particularly vulnerable to acidification, for two reasons: seasonal, wind-driven upwelling events bring low-pH waters from the deep ocean towards the shore, and land-based nutrient runoff from farming fuels algal growth, which also lowers pH.

As a result, the region is already experiencing levels of acidity three-fold greater than the global ocean average, with devastating impacts on the state?s US$270-million shellfish industry. Acidic waters are corrosive to many larval shellfish, and they reduce the amount of available carbonate, which some marine organisms need to form calcium carbonate shells or skeletons.

Sea-grass soak
The panel recommends creating of an "acidity" budget to account for natural and human-influenced sources of acidity; improved methods of forecasting corrosive conditions; and finding ways to use sea grasses to soak up carbon dioxide in shellfish hatcheries.

Improved monitoring will be crucial for better understanding acidification trends, its contributing factors and the biological responses of marine organisms. ?We lack real-time, high resolution data ? which is key because conditions are so variable,? says panel member George Waldbusser, a marine chemist at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

Sensors to measure pH and carbon dioxide abundance have so far been added to 17 existing observing systems nationally, says Dick Feely, a panel member and marine chemist with the NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Seattle, Washington. The NOAA plans to have 60 such monitoring sites nationally in the next few decades. ?It?s an early warning system we?re trying to put together to help industry adapt to changing, sometimes severe, conditions,? says Feely.

The effort to find comprehensive, creative solutions regionally is impressive, says Scott Doney,?a marine chemist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, who was not involved with the panel. ?It?s interesting how they tailored applied science to help aquaculture with a broader research agenda to understand the factors affecting the shellfish industry,? he says.

Despite the report?s regional focus, the authors clarify that the most urgent need is to reduce global carbon dioxide emissions. ?Reducing carbon emissions is crucial, but it?s not a problem that Washington alone can solve,? says panel co-chair Jay Manning, an environmental lawyer at Cascadia Law Group in Olympia, Washington, and former director of the Washington Department of Ecology.

Lubchenco emphasizes that the report highlights the need to formulate adaptation strategies to ocean acidification as well as the urgency to create a stronger momentum to reduce global carbon emissions. "We don't have the luxury of doing one or the other," she says. "We have to do both."

Bell, Virgin Mobile Canada reportedly start unlocking iPhones, at a steep cost

Bell, Virgin Mobile Canada to start unlocking iPhones, at a steep cost

Canadians have had the option to buy a factory-unlocked iPhone for awhile, but liberating Apple's handset after the sale has been officially limited to Rogers and Fido customers. As long as MobileSyrup's leak is the real deal, though, subscribers to Bell and its Virgin Mobile branch can spring for an unlock as of today. That's good news for many, although the hurdle is once again the carrier's desire to keep customers from jumping ship. Those pursuing an unlock will supposedly need to be out of contract, skip any prepaid plans and pay a $75 fee -- in short, they're more likely to derestrict an old, well-worn iPhone than the iPhone 5 they bought last week. We'll just be happy to have another route to hardware independence, and hope that the mention of widened unlock eligibility in 2013 is more than just a rumor.
