Analysis: Brazil commodity exporters under friendly fire in "currency war"

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - In its latest bid to slow dollar inflows in a "global currency war," Brazil has dealt an unexpected blow to its own commodity exporters, choking off medium-term trade financing at a vulnerable time for the sector.

Brazil - a source of much of the world's sugar, coffee, soy, beef and iron ore - has imposed a series of taxes on foreign capital over the past year to slow what President Dilma Rousseff called a "tsunami" of cheap money flowing from the rich world.

But exporters say the central bank went a step too far on March 1, when it quietly implemented a 6 percent financial transactions tax on medium-term loans offered to exporters by banks, a critical tool used by major commodity producers across the globe to finance their operations.

That 6 percent tax has shifted demand to one-year credit lines in dollars, known as ACCs, driving up the costs as trading houses and raw materials exporters rush to shift financing needs.

"Of the two types of export credit in Brazil, the government just killed one by taxing it to death and the cost of the other is going up," said a local executive at a multinational trader who asked not to be named.

Brazil's largest commodities exporters are now lobbying the government to roll back the so-called IOF tax, which is applied to foreign credit and exchange operations. They say the loss of such dollar-linked loans beyond one year has crimped their access to cash and will eventually limit investments.

"We are going to have to find some solution," said Luiz Carlos Carvalho, president of Brazil's Agribusiness Association, which is pressing the government to remove or alter the tax.

Prior to this month, big producers like Bunge , Louis Dreyfus, ADM were free to bring in the dollars when they needed to pay for seed, fertilizer, equipment, fuel or labor. Importers eventually paid off the foreign bank loans through intermediary collection agents after the goods were delivered.

The so-called IOF tax ended this for terms beyond one year.

"Even exporters in minerals and technology had been putting up future foreign delivery contracts to secure financing in dollars with three to five years to pay back," said Renato Buranello, an attorney in trade finance at Brazilian law firm Demarest & Almeida.

BAD TIMING

The squeeze comes at a delicate time for both exporters and major trade-finance banks like France's BNP Paribas , Credit Lyonnais and Societe Generale.

In late 2011, European banks, a leading source of financing for raw materials trade across the globe, were paring back loans to assure they would meet capital requirements in the face of increasing writedowns in asset values.

Meanwhile the Brazilian sugar industry, which accounts for half of global trade in the sweetener, is still recovering after the 2008 financial crisis tipped many mills into bankruptcy.

"We used to use this financing -- but no more," said Luiz de Mendon?a, chief executive of ETH - one of Brazil's biggest cane ethanol producers. He said the value of this type of export financing meant $200 million-$300 million for his company alone.

"The loss of it will weaken an already fragile sector and could unleash more consolidation."

Brazil's soybean and corn producers are in the worst drought in half of decade. Some will not meet delivery contracts.

Exports in general have been declining here due to weak demand in China, Europe and the United States - and Brazil is struggling with a dwindling trade surplus.

The incoming dollars have strengthened the Brazilian real, punishing local manufacturers by making imports cheaper and Brazilian exports more expensive.

ABUSES

Brazil's central bank declined to comment on the extension of the IOF tax to export finance. A government source, however, said some companies were not using the credit lines to finance production and exports. Rather, they were using them to make bets in Brazil's currency and debt markets without paying taxes aimed at slowing speculative dollar inflows.

In recent years foreign investors have flooded Brazil with capital hoping to take advantage of zero-bound interest rates in the U.S., Europe and Japan to bet on Brazilian bonds that paid near low double-digit returns and get the added boost of a strengthening currency. In 2011, the real firmed to its strongest in 11 years, due in part by exports of raw materials.

The strong currency undermined Brazilian manufacturers, though, who had to fight a flood of cheap imports. To help them the central bank laid a tax on speculative dollar inflows.

Some companies seeking to skirt these taxes began using export credit to chase high returns on the financial markets, rather than pay for land, shipping or grow more foodstuffs, said Ademiro Vian, assistant director of financing at the Brazilian Federation of Banks, or Febraban.

"There's speculation going on. You don't need five years' worth of export financing in all ag-export sectors," Vian said.

SUGAR

But the big trading houses, particularly in the sugar and ethanol industry, are scrambling to shore up new financing.

"I have big exporters as clients that are at a loss over what to do," said Lucio Feijo Lopes, a local attorney in trade finance. "This marks a big change in how trade finance is structured. There will be an impact on exports."

Grain producers and exporters say they will manage more easily with the lack of longer-term export financing, as the annual nature of their business allows them to rely more on the 360-day ACC export-exchange contracts for financing.

But this short-term debt is not well suited to longer-term investment needs. Large sugar groups, of which Brazil has plenty, make investments that only pay off in exports over several years.

Long forgotten medium-term export financing contracts that were created in the 1970s under the military dictatorship are being dusted off by the local banks to try to fill the void, but the so-called Export Credit Notes, or NCEs, are based on the real, which exposes the exporter to swings in the currency.

Raw material producers, who are dependent on exports, hold longer-term debt in dollars as a natural hedge against currency risks. If the dollar, which is the currency in which the exports are paid, weakens against the real, so does the firm's debt.

The government recently exempted exporters from a separate tax on currency futures that hampered hedging against exchange rate risks inherent in the export business.

Exporters said it is a step in the right direction but will not offset the loss of medium-term dollar financing.

"If I hold real-linked debt and the dollar falls to 1-to-1 with the real, then my debt balloons against my revenue stream," the local executive at a multinational trader said. "Companies don't last long if they have debts in one currency and revenue in another. As a Brazilian exporter, I have to be in dollars."

Diving into the snow in Japan

Skiing at Club Med Sahoro, Japan. Picture: Chanel Parratt Source: National Features

There are activities for all ages at Club Med Sahoro in Japan. Picture: Chanel Parratt. Source: National Features

I'M NOT sure just whose idea it was to jump out of our hot tub and dive into the snow.

With steam rising from the water into the minus 10C air, snowflakes falling and surrounded by pine trees, I made a well choreographed leap.

Before I knew it, I was heading towards a pile of particularly fluffy snow, my skin tingling, trying to decide if it was hot, cold or just right.

I spent the next 20 minutes back in the tub, trying and failing to find fault with this Club Med resort situated in the centre of Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido.

When you arrive at Club Med Sahoro, a slice of wintry paradise, you're warmly greeted by the staff (called GOs), who broadcast the number of languages they speak by sticking little flags to their name badges.

A stay at the four-trident (equivalent to 4-star) resort includes everything your room, all food and drink, lift passes, group ski and snowboarding lessons, as well as Mini Club and Junior Club for the kids, nightly entertainment, swimming pool, jacuzzi, the outdoor hot tub and more. Ski gear and equipment is available for hire.

After a quick rundown on how things worked, we were off to dinner.

The energy of Daichi, the resort's main restaurant, hits you like a welcome shot of sake.

Boisterous groups celebrate and families enjoy each other's company. Kids bump into new and old friends, taking themselves off to the buffet, relishing the independence of creating their own meals.

There are people from all over the world; on our visit, the French schools from Singapore and Hong Kong were on holidays and families from both had the place almost filled.

The food is good, fresh and varied. It's hard to imagine how they pull it off for breakfast, lunch and dinner but they do and with resounding success.

Dinners each night are usually themed Asian on our first, French on the second and Italian on the third. And you can help yourself to the well-stocked wine fridge.

The first night's meal seemed more like a la carte than buffet-style dining. Beef tataki (thin slices of seared beef) sat on beds of shredded leek with a wasabi sauce that packed a real punch.

There were also steaming bowls of shoyu (soy) ramen with a salty and slightly tangy broth. And sushi was in good supply, with nigiri, freshly cooked prawns and deep-fried tofu filled with sweet sushi rice disappearing quickly from my plate.

There are plenty of dishes to keep those with simpler tastes happy, too, such as roast lamb with steamed vegetables and gravy, grilled salmon with green beans and cherry tomatoes, curries, pasta and salads.

Breakfast included okayu rice porridge with finely chopped vegetables and delicate rolled omelets.

As Club Med is a French company, you know the bread is going to be good. Make sure you try the white chocolate loaf.

Next door at specialty restaurant Mina Mina, nabe is the main event. A portable stovetop sits in the centre of your table as you create your own steam pot, hot pot and ramen with local seafood and fresh vegetables from the self-serve bar.

We'd missed the nightly show by the time we finished dinner, so we organised our ski gear, booked our lessons and took ourselves off to bed.

A deluxe room at Club Med Sahoro is simple, with a gorgeous view of the Shintoko mountains and a very comfortable bed. A traditional Japanese-style room with tatami flooring, futons and a low-set table, it gives a real sense that you're in Japan.

Each day's activities start about 8am, when Mini and Junior Club Med first open. With skiing, snowboarding, indoor and outdoor games on offer, you can put your mind at ease the kids are going to have a great day (yes, even without you). Depending on your ski level, adult classes start between 8.45am and 9.30am.

With altitudes ranging between 400m and 1100m, Sahoro cannot claim to have the steepest runs. It is instead famed for incredible dry powder snow. There are two resorts in the area that use the 17 runs six red, five blue, six green and 3km of cross-country trail.

Venturing off the groomed slopes, Sahoro has enough tree powder to ride or ski for a week. There are seven chairlifts and the gondola, with the longest run stretching 3km and plenty of good-length cruising pistes, perfect for intermediates.

When I visited this month, the resort was about 80 per cent full but I felt like I was one of just a handful on the uncrowded slopes, which were groomed to perfection.

Expect excellent conditions from December to the end of March.

The ski-in, ski-out facilities make everything so easy, as do the GOs, who do a fantastic job entertaining children.

Parents can check children aged four to 11 into Mini Club Med and teens aged 12 to 17 into Junior Club Med for a day of adventure. This includes taking the kids to lunch in the main restaurant and afternoon snacks.

Petit Club Med for children aged two to three and Pyjama Club if you require childcare at night cost extra. All other child minding, including ski lessons each day, are included.

It's not Broadway but nightly performances by the GOs (and often your children) will have you whipping out your camera faster than you can say "winter wonderland".

Take a day off skiing and enjoy a swim in the heated pool, unwind in the sauna or ofuro (Japanese hot tub), play a game of table tennis or watch a movie in the theatre. Spa Pirka has treatments to pamper and relax you and the yoga class is a great way to stretch after a day on the slopes.

Or gear up for some outdoor adventure of a different kind think snowshoes, sleds, horse riding and snow rafting; or a day trip out to the natural hot springs by Daisetsu-zan National Park.

The writer was a guest of Cathay Pacific Airways and Club Med Resorts.

Emerging fungal infection in South West U.S. mimics cancer

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? An emerging fungal infection of the gastrointestinal tract that mimics cancer and inflammatory bowel disease appears to be emerging in the Southwestern United States and other desert regions, according to Mayo Clinic researchers in Arizona investigating the disease. The invasive fungus, Basidiobolus ranarum, is typically found in the soil, decaying organic matter and the gastrointestinal tracts of fish, reptiles, amphibians, and bats.

Mayo researchers studied 44 cases of human gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis reported from around the world, including 17 from Arizona, one from southern Utah and one from elsewhere in the U.S. Eight of the 44 patients died. Mayo's review of the cases is published online in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Basidiobolomycosis is usually a subcutaneous infection in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world that develops following traumatic inoculation of the fungus under the skin. The emergence of gastrointestinal involvement with Basidiobolus in arid regions has been considered unusual.

"The exact mode of acquisition of this gastrointestinal infection is unclear, although consumption of contaminated food or dirt is the favored hypothesis," says lead author H.R. Vikram, M.D., an infectious diseases physician at Mayo Clinic, where seven of the 19 U.S. cases studied were treated. "The infection is still considered so rare that no one had put together a complete description." He adds that more study needs to be done to determine how this infection is contracted, what underlying diseases might predispose patients to this infection and how best to treat it. He emphasizes that early recognition is key to successful treatment.

The first U.S. case of gastrointestinal Basidiobolus infection was reported in 1986. The CDC subsequently investigated six cases in Arizona between 1994 and 1999. This sparked the interest of researchers at Mayo Clinic in Arizona to study this infection.

Patients with this rare fungal infection had non-specific symptoms such as abdominal pain or a mass that could be felt on examination. Before a conclusive diagnosis of the fungal infection was made, most patients were thought to have an abdominal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease or diverticulitis. Surgical resection of the area of involvement and prolonged antifungal therapy successfully treated most patients.

Zoe & Drew: Family Holidays - PGL

Morning! Friday again and the end of term, phew, I need a rest.? Although working from home with five chidlren on school holidays is not what many think of as a rest! It will be lovely to not get up quite so early everyday and rush around making sure everyone has everything they need and then making sure they are all in the right place at the right time after school.? I know I am not alone in this and I think we should all be rewarded with a lazy afternoon watching movies or playing board games with our children.

As it's Friday I am thinking about family holidays again and as it's the start of a school holiday I thought I would look at PGL holidays. When I was younger they were known as 'Parents Get Lost' amongst my friends and I am led to believe that this is still the case!? Since 1957 PGL have been offering children the chance to forget their fears and have amazing adventures.? When I was about 17 I looked into being a playleader with PGL, having volunteered at a local playscheme for a couple of school holidays.? I don't actually remember why I didn't persue this but I know that even back then PGL Summer camps were providing children with a lifetime of memories. Summer camps aren't the only thing offered by PGL, with a fantastic itinery for school trips, group residentials and family activity holidays too.? Connor has been lucky enough to go on a PGL holiday to France with his school and had a fantastic time.? He loved learning to canoe and abseil aswell as gaining some independance being in a different country without mum and dad.? However I am not sure I would choose to send my children on the summer camps.? This is my personal choice and has no bearing on the standard of care and support offered by PGL staff at the numerous locations of the camps.? I have been assured by staff that childrens safety is paramount.? Yet for me holidays are about spending time with my children.? In the US it is often the norm to send children away to camp for the summer which as a child must seem very appealing to head off to basball camp or circus camp and make new friends and learn new skills.? Here in the UK it is not the norm and I guess that's why many of us don't even consider it as an option. For me the appealing part of PGL is the Family Activity Holidays.? There are seven options for these holidays and I know my children would love the Multi Activity option.? Imagine spending a weekend or a week canoeing, abseiling, quad biking, raft building or swinging through the air in a giant swing.?In a world where technology plays a huge part in our lives I love holidays that let you be outside, away from distractions and spend time together as a family.? By partaking in activities and completing challenges together as a family trust builds and communication reaches new levels.? So have you tried PGL holidays and loved them? Or do your children love heading off to Summer Camp with PGL? I would really love your feedback to know if the brochure and website live up to the real thing.? Oh and does anyone know if it really does stand for Parents Get Lost?!

Have a fantastic weekend everyone,

Zoe

Bottom Line - Celebrity real estate: Bieber punk'd by Kutcher

By zillow

What's new in the celebrity real estate world? Justin Bieber is fighting a low appraisal on a home he wants to buy after losing a bidding war to Ashton Kutcher, a home owned by Dennis Hopper and Craig Kilborn sells and Lost's Matthew Fox lists his Manhattan Beach abode.

Justin Bieber's real estate issues

Zillow

The home Justin Bieber reportedly wants to buy.

A few things have come easy for Justin Bieber: He became a superstar from a chance discovery via YouTube, he has a cool girlfriend in Selena Gomez, and Forbes estimates his worth to be $53 million. This however, doesn't all add up to an easy home buying process for the 18-year-old.

The latest news to come out of the the Biebs' real estate hunt is that the sprawling Calabasas, Calif., house he has his eye on has been appraised for significantly less ? $6 million less ? than the asking price, reports TMZ.

This is bad news for any buyer, Bieber included, because a home appraisal that doesn't come near the fair market value can significantly slow down a purchase.

But, perhaps in Justin's mind, he wouldn't be in this real estate mess if he actually did buy a gorgeous, modern $10.8 million home in the Hollywood Hills that he had his eyes on and was rumored to have purchased for his 18th birthday a few weeks ago. Evidently, Bieber was hot to buy the house, but there was one problem ? Ashton Kutcher was renting it out. When Kutcher realized his 3-month rental could disappear under him by none other than Justin Bieber, Kutcher reportedly bought it.

In May 2009, the Home Valuation Code of Conduct was adopted to reduce the possibility of inflated property appraisals, the kind of thing that was a little too common during the real estate boom.

The goal of the HVCC is to get a independent, unbiased appraisal of the property, which in theory is good, but it forces banks to choose an appraiser through a third-party "appraisal management company" or AMC, rather than their local, preferred appraiser.

Sometimes these third-party appraisers come up with a value that appears to be significantly off market value because they may not be familiar with the area or use appropriate comps. However, due to the HVCC, the lenders must go along with the AMC's appraisal, making it harder to buyers to sell or homeowners to refinance.

A low appraisal doesn't mean the end of the line for Bieber's dream home but it does mean a little more work on both the buyer and seller's end.

Home to Margaret Sullavan, Dennis Hopper and Craig Kilborn sells

Zillow

The former home of Margret Sullavan, Dennis Hopper and Craig Kilborn.

1712 North Crescent Heights is more than an address of a house; it's also the title of a photography book that showcases Dennis Hopper's photography during the early 1960s.

Home to Dennis Hopper and his first wife Brooke Hayward, the home was a gathering place for many of the stars of the 1960s ? the "second generation of Hollywood" ? and also the starting point for Hopper's photography.

Hopper and Hayward moved into the 1920s Hollywood Hills home while Hopper was filming "Easy Rider." After the birth of their first daughter, Hayward gave Hopper a camera. The star soon took up photography, featuring his friends and fellow stars.

Not only was the house home to Hayward and Hopper, but reportedly the property was previously owned by Hayward's mother, silver screen actress Margaret Sullavan.

"The home has a history of celebrities," said listing agent Aileen Comora. "Ike and Tina Turner visited Dennis there and Jimmy Stewart was a frequent visitor of Margaret's. Merv Griffin played the piano in the living room and George Segal remembers the home very well."

Craig Kilborn also lived in the home over 10 years before deciding to sell recently.

"About three to four months ago, (Kilborn) decided to travel and decided it was time to move on from the house," Comora said. "So we did put it on the market and pretty much one of the first people who saw it bought it."

The Spanish-inspired home exudes its old Hollywood history with terraced gardens, a beautiful pool and a backyard so private that someone who wants to could "walk around naked" said Comora.

The 3-bedroom, 3-bath home opens up with a turret foyer opening to the living room and dining room, that also extends to the second floor and contains a sitting room attached to the master bedroom.

Listed for $3 million, the home is closing at the end of the month.

See more photos of Hopper's home on Zillow.

"Lost" actor Fox lists Manhattan Beach home

Zillow

Matthew Fox lived in this Santa Monica home prior to moving to Oahu to film "Lost."

For six years, actor Matthew Fox lived on the Hawaiian island of Oahu battling bizarre monsters and doing some medical sleuthing as Dr. Jack Shepherd on the hit TV show "Lost."

Prior to that, the actor lived with his family in a Spanish bungalow in Manhattan Beach, Calif. But with "Lost" out of the way and a new home in Bend, Ore., Fox has listed the 4-bedroom, 2-bath home on the Manhattan Beach real estate market for $1.995 million.

Fox purchased the home for $880,000 in 1999 in the midst of his role on "Party of Five." Although the show was popular, it was "Lost" that propelled Fox into stardom. Despite his star status, Fox didn't return to California after the show wrapped up filming, preferring to buy a home far from the Hollywood hubbub.

Fox's home in Manhattan Beach sits on the hill above the Pacific Ocean, complete with panoramic beach and water views from the upper floor rooms and wraparound balcony. Spanish detailing is found throughout the house from coved ceilings, colorful tiled stairs and dark wood molding.

The family room is dominated by a sand stucco fireplace and cathedral-height ceilings.

Key Components of an Estate Plan

Many people believe that if they have a will, their estate planning is complete, but there is much more to a solid estate plan. A good plan should be designed to save on estate taxes, protect assets if you need to move into a nursing home, and appoint someone to act for you if you become disabled.?

All estate plans should include, at minimum, three ?important estate-planning instruments: a durable power of attorney and a will. A trust can also be useful to avoid probate and to manage your estate, both during your life and after you are gone. In addition, medical directives allow you to appoint someone to make medical decisions on your behalf.

?1. Will

A will is a legally binding statement directing who will receive your property at your death. If you do not have a will, the state will determine how your property is distributed. A will also appoints a legal representative (called an executor or a personal representative) to carry out your wishes. A will is especially important if you have minor children, because it allows you to name a guardian for the children. However, a will covers only probate property. Many types of property or forms of ownership pass outside of probate. Jointly owned property, property in trust, life insurance proceed,s and property with a named beneficiary?such as IRAs or 401(k) plans?all pass outside of probate and aren?t covered under a will.

?2. Trust

A trust is a legal arrangement through which one person (or an institution, such as a bank)?called a ?trustee??holds legal title to property for another person, or ?beneficiary.? Trusts have one set of beneficiaries during those beneficiaries? lives and another set?often their children?who begin to benefit only after the first group has died. There are several different reasons for setting up a trust. If you establish a revocable living trust that terminates when you die, any property in the trust passes immediately to the beneficiaries. This can save time and money for the beneficiaries.

?Certain trusts can also result in tax advantages both for the donor and the beneficiary. These could be ?credit shelter? or ?life insurance? trusts. Other trusts may be used to protect property from creditors or to help the donor qualify for Medicaid. Unlike wills, trusts are private documents, and only those individuals with a direct interest in the trust need know of trust assets and distribution. Provided they are well drafted, another advantage of trusts is their continuing effectiveness, even if the donor dies or becomes incapacitated.

?3. Power of Attorney

A power of attorney allows a person you appoint?your ?attorney-in-fact??to act in your place for financial purposes if and when you ever become incapacitated. In that case, the person you choose will be able to step in and take care of your financial affairs. Without a durable power of attorney, no one can represent you unless a court appoints a conservator or guardian. That court process takes time, costs money, and the judge may not choose the person you would prefer.

?4. Medical Directives

A medical directive may encompass a number of different documents, including a health-care proxy, a durable power of attorney for health care, a living will, and medical instructions. The exact document or documents will depend on your state?s laws and the choices you make.

Both a health care proxy and a durable power of attorney for health care designate someone you choose to make health-care decisions for you if you are unable to do so yourself. A living will instructs your health care provider to withdraw life support if you are terminally ill or in a vegetative state. A broader medical directive may include the terms of a living will, but will also provide instructions if you are in a less serious state of health but are still unable to make medical decisions yourself.

?5. Beneficiary Designations

Although not necessarily a part of your estate plan, at the same time you create an estate plan, you should make sure your retirement plan beneficiary designations are up to date. If you don?t name a beneficiary, the distribution of benefits may be controlled by state or federal law or according to your particular retirement plan. Some plans automatically distribute money to a spouse or children. Although others may leave it to the retirement plan holder?s estate, this could have negative tax consequences. The only way to control where the money goes is to name a beneficiary.

Mia Wasikowska Is Madame Bovary

What has long set Gustave Flaubert?s ?Madame Bovary? apart from other literary works is that it is wildly considered by scholars and other writers alike to be a ?perfect? work of fiction and a supreme example of Realism, one elevated by Flaubert?s personal signature of weaving in themes and details and paying particular attention to setting and place. It?s not a very original story ? in short terms, it tracks the unhappy marriage of a mismatched pair that ends tragically after the wife?s unfaithfulness, partially sparked by her boredom ? but Flaubert?s skill makes the reading of the book its own reward.

Of course, the novel has been adapted for the screen numerous times ? including Albert Ray?s 1932 film, MGM?s 1949 film directed by Vincente Minnelli, a 2000 miniseries starring Frances O?Connor, and Claude Chabrol?s 1991 Isabelle Huppert-starring feature. And, of course, it?s high time that Hollywood adapted the novel yet again ? its importance as a written work be damned!

Variety reports that Mia Wasikowska will star in a new Madame Bovary as Emma Bovary herself. Wasikowska has become Hollywood?s go-to girl for period pieces, with recent roles in Jane Eyre and Albert Nobbs, so such casting is not surprising. Sophie Barthes (Cold Souls) will direct from a screenplay by Rose Barrenche. The outlet reports that ?the adaptation is a period piece that is faithful to Gustave Flaubert?s original story, [but] it is a fresh retelling of the classic novel, em[emphasizing the more youthful and contemporary themes.? What, like having illicit sex and being unsatisfied in life? So like, a hipster adaptation?

Paul Giamatti is reportedly ?also circling a key role,? which could likely be the sly and conniving Monsieur Lheureux. The role would reunite Giamatti with Barthes, who directed him in her Cold Souls.

Even with talent on board like Wasikowska and Giamatti, I am unable to stir up even a smidgen of excitement for this project. What about you?

Blood Money Movie Review | Entertainment | Know your city

Director: Vishal Mahadkar

Cast: Kunal Khemu, Amrita Puri

burrp! Says: **1/2

Bollywood believes in formulas and the Bhatts just swear by them. So if it?s a film from the Bhatt camp, you can safely assume that they are presenting a tried and tested story.

Blood Money hardly has anything that you would not expect. Just 30 minutes into the film and you will be able to predict the end. The film sticks to the formula so much that it actually forgets that the audience is expecting something unexpected. The film just plays it very safe.

The story-line of Blood Money is Shah Rukh Khan?s Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman re-loaded and remixed. It?s the same story adapted (without permission we are sure) and presented in a different backdrop.

Kunal Khemu plays a wide-eyed Indian called Kunal Kadam who has landed in Cape Town (South Africa) for the first time to work for a diamond trading company. He soon manages to catch the eye of his boss with his selling skills. The boss tells him that that his willingness to succeed and the fire in his belly remind him of his early days when he was struggling to set up his business in Cape Town. Sounding similar to Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman? Well?

Apart from being predictable, the film moves at a very slow pace. Kunal slowly gets entangled into the web of his boss? business which includes a lot of underhand dealings. These dealings soon assume larger proportions when Kunal discovers that his boss strikes business with criminals and terrorists too. From that time on, it is just a matter of ?slow time? when Kunal would declare war on his boss. Obviously, he did and that?s the climax of the film.

Yes, of course there?s some personal drama in the film. But it is more like what you would see in a TV serial these days. Remember how Shah Rukh Khan ?almost? strayed with Amrita Singh and Juhi Chawla almost left him when she discovered it? Ditto with Kunal. His wife (played by Amrita Puri) discovers that he has cheated on her with Mia Udeya. The tension between Kunal and Amrita peaks when Kunal is going through his worst in office. Of course, everything gets better as Kunal begins to triumph again. We are not giving the entire storyline out because that is the only unexpected twist that the film is perhaps banking on.

Kunal tries very hard to do a decent job and manages it in the end. Amrita Puri didn?t have much to do ? she just had to be either very happy or very sad, which she barely managed. Mia Udeya only had a few anglicised dialogues in the film and she failed to deliver even that. But one thing that was expected of her ? get into a skimpy bikini with the camera lovingly caressing her shapely thighs ? she has carried off the bikini scene with ease.

Every film has some obvious flaws that you cannot miss even if you shut your eyes. In this film, it is Kunal?s ever changing hair-style. If he has, long locks in one shot, he has a short crop in another one. Obviously this film took a long time to shoot and Kunal kept on changing his hair-style through the shooting. One wonders how this escaped Vishal Mahadkar?s attention. The curious case of Kunal Khemu?s hair will definitely not miss you even if you try to miss it.

In the end, the film is a traditional fare for which you don?t need to twitch any of your brain muscles. It is just what it is supposed to be: a no-brainer Bollywood film that tells you a simple, straight-forward story. It?s not a good film but it?s not very bad either.

Watch it this weekend. It tells a story that you have already liked before.

Japan partly opening 3 towns in nuclear no-go zone

(AP) ? Japan is partly opening areas just inside the evacuation zone around its leaking nuclear power plant for the first time since last year's disasters.

The 20-kilometer (12-mile) perimeter around the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant remains largely intact. But Friday's announcement from the goverment means about 16,000 of Japan's 100,000 nuclear evacuees could be allowed to return home.

Towns in the least contaminated areas of the no-go zone will be rearranged into three categories based on contamination levels.

The new arrangement takes effect in Kawauchi and Tamura starting Sunday and Minamisoma in mid-April, affecting about 16,000 residents. Parts of each town will remain off-limits because of higher exposure levels, and eight other municipalities in the same low-contamination category have not yet decided which areas should be reopened.

Most residents, however, are waiting until the area is further decontaminated and infrastructure restored.
