Italy borrowing costs soar in volatile euro markets (Reuters)

MILAN/LONDON (Reuters) ? Italy's borrowing costs soared at a closely watched bond auction on Thursday as investors worried by the euro zone debt crisis and an impasse over the U.S. debt ceiling exacted a high risk premium.

The 8 billion euro ($11.4 billion) auction was conducted in volatile markets made more feverish by rumors, denied by Italian politicians, that Economy Minister Giulio Tremonti was preparing to resign.

The pressure on Italian stocks and bonds reflected both concern about Rome's ability to cut its sovereign debt -- second only to Greece's in Europe at 120 percent of annual output -- and doubts over whether last week's summit of euro zone leaders found a durable solution to the Greek debt crisis.

Criticism of the latest euro zone bailout plan for Athens has surfaced at the International Monetary Fund, as well as among European economists and market analysts, who say it does too little to reduce Greece's 340 billion euro debt.

A Reuters poll of 55 economists showed a majority felt that while the rescue package was a step in the right direction, it was not a turning point from which the crisis would be resolved.

Cyprus may be next in line for a bailout after its cabinet resigned on Thursday over a fatal munitions blast that destroyed the island's main power plant and compounded its economic problems, which include heavy exposure to Greek debt.

Italian yields at the bond auction jumped to 5.77 percent on 10-year paper, the highest since February 2000, and to 4.80 percent on three-year debt, the highest since July 2008.

"You can argue that they were able to place bonds in the market, but the trend in yields is starting to become really impressive," said Alessandro Giansanti, a strategist at ING in Amsterdam.

"They can't afford this kind of increase every month."

TREMONTI

Tremonti, long viewed as the guarantor of fiscal prudence in Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's fractious government, is under pressure over his use of a Rome apartment belonging to an aide under investigation for alleged corruption.

Umberto Bossi, head of the Northern League, part of Italy's governing coalition, dismissed rumors that Tremonti could lose his job, saying the affair was "nothing very serious." But the economy minister faces growing pressure from the opposition and media to explain himself, while his relations with Berlusconi have been strained for months.

Tremonti made a joke of the rumors that he might quit over the apartment issue, telling a news conference on Thursday: "I've resigned...as a tenant." He did not comment directly.

At one stage on Thursday, the secondary market yield on 10-year Italian government bonds jumped to 5.99 percent, near peaks hit during the height of bond market panic shortly before the euro zone summit. It later fell back to 5.84 percent, up only 7 basis points on the day, as fears over Tremonti and the threat of a U.S. debt default partially eased.

The rise in Italy's borrowing costs may put in doubt its contribution to the next tranche of aid for Athens in the current Greek bailout plan, to which Rome signed up last year, euro zone officials told Reuters.

In a conference call of euro zone finance officials on Thursday, during which the next tranche of emergency loans for Greece was discussed, Italy said it might have to use a "step-out" option in September if its own financing costs rose higher than those on the Greek loans.

"They have not decided one way or another," said one euro zone source familiar with the situation.

IMF CONCERN

Euro zone leaders agreed last week that their bailout fund, the European Financial Stability Facility, would in future be empowered to buy bonds in the secondary market and give states in difficulty precautionary credit lines.

But that will only take effect once new EFSF rules have been approved by national parliaments, a time-consuming and potentially difficult process. Italy's Treasury Director-General Vittorio Grilli said on Thursday he hoped the EFSF would gain its new powers by the end of 2011; in the meantime, euro zone states will remain vulnerable in bond markets.

An IMF source said there was growing concern among non-European members of the global lender's board about the Fund's exposure to Greece and the euro zone.

"There is a feeling on the board that we are in the same boat as the Europeans but we don't have much power to take decisions...We are linked to the errors of the Europeans," said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

"The issue today is not so much the mistakes of Greece but what is happening with the Europeans. Some people are getting more uncomfortable than before."

Euro zone leaders' second bailout plan for Greece includes 109 billion euros in official funding for Athens, on top of 110 billion euros from a first bailout scheme launched in May last year. The IMF has agreed to contribute about a third of past euro zone bailouts, but it is unclear how much it will be willing to provide this time.

The Financial Times quoted the Brazilian and Indian members of the IMF board as warning against pouring further large sums into another Greek bailout with uncertain prospects. Brazilian director Paulo Nogueira Batista was quoted as saying the austerity imposed on Athens was too tough while Greece's private creditors were given too easy a time.

The new bailout includes money to be raised by selling Greek government assets. Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos appeared to backtrack on Thursday on plans to sell the government's stake in gaming monopoly OPAP said on Thursday that an expected loss at its Greek unit Emporiki and its participation in the rescue would force it to take a second-quarter provision of up to 850 million euros.

Investors worry that if the second rescue of Greece fails, European banks will have to accept bigger losses on their Greek debt holdings, as well as losses on bonds in Ireland and Portugal, which are also receiving bailouts.

Market valuations of euro zone bank shares have fallen this year close to levels hit during the global credit crisis of 2008-2009, in terms of both book value and projected earnings for the next 12 months, Thomson Reuters data shows.

Police in Grand Prairie, Texas, have said they believe the shooting was planned and followed years of domestic violence. Trini Do received a protective order in December against her husband, but she had it withdrawn earlier this year against a prosecutor's advice and wanted to give him another chance, an aunt has said.

The fifth victim in the shooting rampage, Thuy Nguyen, 25, was Trini Do's sister-in-law. She will be buried in Vietnam.

Four others were wounded in the rampage, but police said their injuries were not life-threatening.

The siblings' deaths have shaken the immigrant community in western Arkansas, where more than 1,300 Vietnamese live in the Fort Smith area. Trini Do and her seven siblings moved to Fort Smith from Vietnam in 1994.

Their friends and relatives gathered Saturday in the Sacred Heart of Mary Church in nearby Barling. A choir performed a hymn in Vietnamese entitled "Coming Home" as the caskets were escorted into the auditorium. Children carried framed photos of the dead, and a procession of relatives followed. Many youth tied white strips of cloth around their foreheads as a sign of respect.

The Rev. Peter Quang Le, in a homily delivered primarily in Vietnamese, described how many were still in disbelief after the shootings, even after seeing the bodies of the dead.

"We cannot understand it," he said.

Le asked the audience not to be angry or seek revenge, but to pray for the victims and their family.

"The psychological wounds because of violence in the minds of (the Ta) family will endure all their lives," he said.

Everyone in the auditorium stood, raised their right hand and turned toward Le as he touched the chest of Hoi Ta, the siblings' father, and prayed. Ta stood in silence, his arms crossed and his shirt sleeves rolled.

When the caskets were opened at the end of the service, Hoi Ta led a long line of mourners to the bodies. He leaned into the faces of his children and whispered a few quiet words to each.

Trini Do's aunt, Janice Tran, and other relatives remembered her as a good-natured person who worked two jobs and loved to travel.

"When you talked to her, you know what kind of person (she was)," Tran said.

Relatives remembered Lynn Ta, who attended a Fort Smith high school, for her smile and passion for taking photos with her friends. Michelle Ta loved to shop and cook, they said. Hien Ta was an avid swimmer and basketball player.

The siblings were among about 30 friends and family who attended the private party at the rented roller rink. A DJ at the rink told The Associated Press that guests had just finished singing "Happy Birthday" to the couple's son when Tan Do spoke to him briefly, then pulled out a gun and shot Trini Do and her relatives.

One of Trini Do's four surviving siblings was wounded in the rampage and remains hospitalized, Tran said. Trini and Tran Do's son and his 3-year-old sister were not injured in the shootings and have been in the care of other relatives. Tran said they were at the funeral.

LONDON (AFP) ? Former British newspaper editor Piers Morgan, now a presenter for US television network CNN, on Thursday denied fresh allegations that he printed stories obtained through phone hacking.

Morgan -- a former editor of Rupert Murdoch's now shuttered News of the World paper and of the rival Daily Mirror tabloid -- made his latest denial after British media printed comments that he made in a BBC radio programme in 2009.

"As I have said before, I have never hacked a phone, told anyone to hack a phone, nor to my knowledge published any story obtained from the hacking of a phone," Morgan said in a statement, issued through his publicist at CNN's parent company Turner Broadcasting System.

In the 2009 programme, "Desert Island Discs", presenter Kirsty Young asked Morgan how he felt about having to deal with "people who rake through bins for a living, people who tap people's phones" to get information for tabloids.

Morgan replied: "Not a lot of that went on. A lot of it was done by third parties, rather than the staff themselves," adding: "That's not to defend it, because obviously you were running the results of their work."

In the programme, Morgan added he was "quite happy to be parked in the corner as (a) tabloid beast and to have to sit here defending all these things I used to get up to", adding that the "net of people doing it was very wide."

But in his statement Morgan said: "There is no contradiction between my comments on Kirsty Young's Desert Island Discs show and my unequivocal statements with regard to phone hacking."

"Millions of people heard these comments when I first made them in 2009 on one of the BBC's longest-running radio shows, and none deduced that I was admitting to, or condoning illegal reporting activity."

The publicist stressed that she was acting on Morgan's behalf and not for CNN.

Later Thursday, Morgan took to the Twitter microblogging site to deny a false rumour that he had been suspended by CNN.

"Sorry to disappoint you all, but ... I've not been suspended by CNN," he wrote.

Morgan was sacked as editor of the Daily Mirror in 2004 for publishing fake photos of British soldiers purportedly abusing Iraqis. He joined CNN in January, taking over from veteran interviewer Larry King.

On Tuesday Trinity Mirror, publisher of the Daily Mirror, said it was conducting an internal review of its editorial controls.

Morgan last week demanded an apology from a British lawmaker who claimed, at a London hearing which quizzed Rupert Murdoch, that Morgan had admitted to phone hacking.

Social Media Panel | ULI Atlanta | Atlanta Real Estate Forum

With the release of Google+, the latest social network site, discussions about social media have been buzzing! There?s no doubt that you need to get into this evolving world, but there are too many potential starting points. What?s the best channel to use? More importantly, how do you use social media effectively?

These questions and more were answered at an event held by ULI Atlanta, The Evolving World of Social Media in Real Estate. The event was held on Tuesday, July 26 at Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan and was a great success!

The event?s panel was moderated by commercial real estate reporter Doug Sams of the Atlanta Business Chronicle and included John Cantrell, Life @ HOK blog contributor and Sustainable Design Leader; Carol Flammer, managing partner at mRELEVANCE and president of Flammer Relations; and Toby Bloomberg, president of Bloomberg Marketing.

The first topic of discussion was social media tips. Carol advised that the social media mix is always changing, so blogs should be the ?engine? of your program. Plus, blogs create more SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for your website! John, another expert blogger, piped in that blogs should be genuine and connect with your audience. Toby piggybacked this by stating that you have to know who you want your audience to be before you begin blogging.

These tips led to a discussion about the trends of social media in real estate. John stated that one trend is the reluctance to get started. He advised to build a crowd and join a crowd, whether that is by blogging or engaging on other sites like Twitter. Toby suggested that QR (Quick Response) codes, or matrix barcodes that are readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera phones, are interesting for real estate. With a scan of the QR code, a client can be taken to a site or video tour of homes and can be placed on brochures or other promotional material, such as signs. Carol added to this by saying that promos and coupons are big hits. Sites, such as House Tipper, are even offering Groupon-type deals for houses. She also stated that these types of deals help to build a fan base.

Are you still hesitant about social media? The panelists continued with success stories. Carol gave an example of a builder facing a 75% marketing cut, due to the real estate bubble of 2008. The builder decided to increase its social media program, and sales remained stable. In addition, 22% of traffic in 2010 of home models was due to this program. She also stated that buyers use social media. They even may ask questions and do their research on social media instead of going to an agent.

More ?takeaways? from this panel discussion included tips on managing, creating content direction and having accountability when it comes to social media usage. As John said, ?It?s like Netflix, people can ?watch? or pull it up any time they want.? So, watch what you say and don?t hinder your personal or company?s brand.

Overall, the event taught that social media is here to stay. It?s a great source of ROI (Return on Investment), increases SEO and builds up brands and reputations. Your real estate competitors probably use it. Isn?t it time you do?

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration says Osama bin Laden's death has raised the risk of anti-American violence worldwide.

The State Department said in a global travel warning Tuesday that Americans should take precaution and maintain vigilance about terrorist threats, demonstrations and the possibility of violence against U.S. citizens.

It said al-Qaida and other groups are planning terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in Europe, Asia, Africa and Middle East.

The department said attacks may be in the form of suicide operations, assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings and bombings.

Americans should consider the potential for attacks on transportation systems and tourist infrastructure, it said. It noted such attacks in Moscow, London, Madrid, Glasgow and New York in recent years.

101 Offline Activities Book Review : Sweeties Reviews

Technology is an integral part of our daily lives and now our children are growing up with technology on the brain by the time they are 2. My granddaughter can use a Smartphone and tell you how to search on Google and she is only 4 and has never gone to school yet.

Because technology has taken over every breathing moment of the day it gets harder and harder to get kids unwired. Some would say that it doesn?t matter if kids just use technology to learn and play but I would say, and so do others, that kids need time to use their imagination. Technology is great and without it I couldn?t be writing this post but to have healthy kids I think they need balance in everything they do.

I received a copy of the book, 101 Offline Activities You can Do With Your Child to review. It reminded me of some of the things I used to do with my kids when they were growing up. They didn?t have computers, Internet or Smartphones so they had a lot of time on their hands. Boredom frequently set in when nothing great was on TV or the weather wouldn?t cooperate for them to go outside and explore the woods behind our house.

We used to make all kinds of craft projects, setup a neighborhood baseball card show in our basement and invite friends to come trade cards, and even do design obstacle courses in the driveway.

Steve and Ruth Bennett, the authors of this book, have put simple, fun, and easy activities for you to enjoy with your kids in a well laid out book. I like how they have used drawings for the index instead of a long list of topics in text format.

Here are some examples of offline activities from the book:

• Create a Big Newspaper
• In-Flight Map Game Pack
• Magical Mystery Machine
• Macaroni Math
• Kitchen Bowling
• Indoor Treasure Hunt (we used to do this at Christmas for the kids presents)
• Snork
• Sign Jumbles
• Pin the Food on the Plate

I?d say the only thing I don?t like about the book is the lack of color and a little too much text. The cover is so colorful and you open it up and not a lick of color can be found inside. If the goal is to get you to want to read the book to find offline activities I think they have to take in consideration the fact that most people have the attention span of a mouse. Nowadays you might have 5 seconds to impress someone and if you give them too much to read, like this post, you may just lose them. If the book had more photos of the steps you do to make the projects or play the game they are telling you about you might find more moms interested in getting their kids involved. You will find kids gravitate to pictures too.

The more pictures the better I say, maybe because I am a visual person and tend to skim over text. The same way they put the pictures in the index, they could have put picture instructions instead of so much wording with just a sentence under each one.

I do like how they make a short list of items you will need on each page, one drawing to show you what you will end up with and then put everything in categories like home, out and about, anytime or anyplace, in the kitchen, on the road, etc. They make it easy to use this book as a reference when you need a quick idea for something fun to do with your kids offline.

Editor's Rating:

Overall I?d have to say I give it a 4 out of 5 stars just because of the lack of color and lack of step-by-step pictures. Other than that, I think it is well designed book with thoughtful ideas for things to do and make with your kids that have nothing to do with computer, Smartphones or the Internet.

??Social Media and Political Change?

?The ?Arab Spring? as well as recent events in other parts of the world have demonstrated that new communication technologies, such as mobile phones and the internet, are simultaneously new tools for social movement organizing and new tools for surveillance by authoritarian regimes. ?Though communication theory necessarily transcends particular technologies, software, and websites, digital media have clearly become an important part of the toolkit available to political actors. ?These technologies are also becoming part of the research toolkit for scholars interested in studying the changing patterns in interpersonal, political, and global communication.

How have changing patterns of interpersonal, political, and global communication created new opportunities for social movements, or new means of social control by political elites? ?The role of social media in new patterns of communication is especially dramatic across North Africa and the Middle East, where decades of authoritarian rule have been challenged?with varying degrees of success. ?Social media?broadly understood as a range of communication technologies that allow individuals to manage the flow of content across their own networks of family, friends and other social contacts?seem to have had a crucial role in the political upheaval and social protest in several countries. ?Mass communication has not ceased to be important, but is now joined with a variety of other media with very different properties that may reinforce, displace, counteract, or create fresh new phenomena.

?Research on social media and political change outside North Africa and the Middle East is also welcome, especially if it is about countries and communities managed by authoritarian regimes, or by emerging democracies where democratic institutions and practises may be deepening or thinning. Also welcome are manuscripts on media industries, the political economy of telecommunications policy, and research that uses original data or existing data in original ways?as long as such manuscripts fit the thematic interest in social media and political change. Manuscripts should contribute to advancing our understanding of both social media and political change.

This Special Issue seeks original qualitative, comparative, and quantitative research on social media and political change, particularly as related to events in North Africa and the Middle East, but we are also receptive to work on political change in other parts of the developing world. ?We would welcome manuscripts from a diverse range of methodologies, and covering diverse communities and cultures. ?Methodological innovations or mixed method approaches are particularly encouraged, and manuscripts on the interpersonal and intergroup aspects of social movement organizing are central interest. ?Whatever the approach, our goal is to select manuscripts that are grounded in the actual use of social media in promoting or resisting political change in developing countries and regions.

??Issue-Congruence and Political Communication in Representative Democracies?

?There is widespread agreement within public and academic discussion that opinions and attitudes of representative elites, i.e. members of parliament, in democracies must in some sense reflect the opinions and attitudes of the population. This assumption provides the starting point for the comparison of representative elites and citizens in terms of issue-congruence. However, this discussion still exhibits blind spots and open questions.

?For instance, when it comes to clarify whether and under which circumstances issue-congruence provides an appropriate indicator for the quality of democracy the opinions begin to differ. Additionally, issue-congruence can be analyzed for a variety of issues and for different relations, e.g. between the entity of representative elites and the population within the same country, between individual parliamentarians and their constituencies or between party-elites and their followers. While all these perspectives provide important insights into the core of representative democracy, a comprehensive approach integrating these perspectives is still lacking.

?Further, only a few empirical studies analyze, if issue-congruence results out of responsive or out of leading political elites. Spoken more generally, the mechanisms underlying issue-(in)congruence need more attention. At this point the link to communication studies becomes obvious, because those mechanisms are necessarily based on communication between representative elites and citizens. Integrating these two perspectives may help deepen the understanding of both approaches. For instance, if we analyze the communication patterns of representative elites and citizens, could we actually identify strategies that are suited to achieve issue-congruence? Can the strategies of representative elites be subsumed in the dichotomy of leadership and responsiveness? Does the degree of issue-congruence differ dependent on the channel and type as well as on the sender and recipient of the communication?

?Especially the discussion about E-democracy depicts citizens as increasingly using the technical possibilities of Web 2.0 in order to bring ?their? political elites (successfully) in congruence with ?the? population. For representative elites the direct way of communication via Web 2.0 towards the voters provides them the possibility of individualized political communication, which may serve as tool to achieve issue-congruence for individual MPs by simultaneously distancing themselves from their party.

?In front of the sketched questions and desiderata in both fields of research the workshop aims to bring together scholars of issue-congruence with scholars from communication studies, not only to examine the empirical evidence for the mentioned questions and assumptions, but also to proceed to a general discussion on the relation between issue-congruence and communication. The workshop welcomes theoretical, empirical and methodological papers.

?The workshop will be hosted by the Collaborative Research Centre 580 at the Universities of Jena and Halle, Research Project A3 ?Representative Elites after the Regime Change?.

ECREA Communication Law and Policy Workshop 2012

?Communication and Media Policy in the Era of the Internet and Digitization

?16-17 March 2011, Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, Germany

?The workshop will be dedicated to the challenges faced by communication and media policy due to digitization and, in particular, due to the internet, which can be seen as the most important platform for convergence developments and as a driver of numerous changes in the communication and media industries. In addition to discussing communication and media policy from the perspective of change there will be a focus on trying to find out how far guiding principles, institutions and regulatory arrangements have shown either resilience or adaptability to new technological possibilities. ?CAMMRO?s 5th INTERNATIONAL DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM ON ARAB & MUSLIM MEDIA RESEARCH

The Centre for Arab & Muslim Media Research (CAMMRO) has been a pioneer in organising doctoral symposia for researchers in Arab and Muslim media and their audiences. The previous events organised at King?s College, and Goldsmiths, University of London made great success and attracted a large number of researchers and academics. The scope of the 5th annual symposium will address media, communication and culture in not only the Arab World but in various other Muslim countries from Africa and Asia. The event also covers research on diasporic and minority media such as satellite TV, radio and social networks especially in Europe and the USA.

Contributions are welcome regarding the following themes:

Submissions:

We welcome contributions from around the world about the above mentioned areas of enquiry. Abstracts to be considered for symposium panel presentations should be submitted electronically by 29th July 2011. Each abstract should be no more than 350 words, and each presentation should be no more than 15 minutes. Draft papers should be submitted by 23rd September 2011. Polish-German Young Researcher Prize

?

The Prize is awarded to a young researcher who has already acquired the master`s degree or to a PhD student who either in his or her master`s thesis or in an advanced PhD thesis or in an advanced research project being currently under realization:

- has been investigating an issue that concerns Poland as far as the choice of the subject is concerned or an issue that remains in a territorial connection with Poland;

- has already started or intends to start in the nearest future cooperation with a Polish university or a Polish research institution;

- has applied methodology developed by Polish research institutions in his or her research;

- has been making use of results of research carried out by Polish research institutions or by individual Polish researchers;

- has already started cooperation with a PAN-research institute, which has been documented by an advanced scientific bilateral cooperation program.

The scope of the Prize is not limited to any particular branch or field of science. The Prize may be awarded for research conducted in any of them, however under the condition that the research activity of the candidate has involved partnership or another kind of participation of Polish science either with regard to its subject, methodology or the way the research is organized and carried out.

The winner of the competition will be selected by a Jury comprising four to six representatives of the Polish Academy of Sciences and of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Cologne.

The administrative tasks necessary to carry out the competition are performed by the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The competition is advertised ? on behalf of the organizers ? by universities located in the following German federal states: North Rhine-Westphalia, Hessia, Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland.

Application forms, accompanied by the necessary attachments and an opinion on the applicant`s research achievements, prepared by an independent scientist, shall be submitted online in English to?Tomasz.Badowski@msz.gov.pl?before September 30, 2011. If there is any specific documentation of the research (not necessarily in English), the applicant may submit it as well.
