Samsung Backpedals on U.S. Plan for Windows RT Tablet

Months after Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) pulled back on plans to bring a Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows RT-based tablet to market, Samsung followed suit late last week, disclosing that it won?t be offering its version of the device in the United States, at least in the foreseeable future.

In an interview with CNET at last week?s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Samsung senior vice president Mike Abary, who heads the Korean giant?s U.S. PC and tablet business, blamed tepid demand for the device from the vendor?s retailers and consumer confusion about Windows RT?the version of Windows optimized for ARM-based devices?as compared to Windows 8, which runs on Intel (NASDAQ: INTC)-based devices. From data yielded by its own studies, Samsung determined that to go to market with its Windows RT tablet, named the Ativ Tab, required a hefty investment to educate customers, in dollar amounts ostensibly greater than the company was willing to make at this point for what it perceived as an uncertain return.
