Ethan Zohn's Cancer Returns; Survivor Winner Optimistic - The ...

Survivor winner Ethan Zohn's cancer is back after 20 months of remission.

The 37-year-old said he was told by doctors back on September 14 that his Hodgkin's lymphoma had returned in his chest only and not all over his body.

"I don't want fear or cancer to define me, but it's always in the back of your mind," he said, adding that he faces 12 weeks of chemotherapy treatment.

SGN-35, which targets the cancerous cells and will prevent him from losing his hair, may be supplemented by a stem-cell transplant from one of his brothers.

He tells People magazine regarding that:

"But the doctors won't tell me which ... they didn't want me to start treating one differently than the other. Of course my whole family is taking bets on it."

Zohn isn't letting the cancer get him down and he is planning to run the NYC Marathon on November 6 to raise money for his Grassroot Soccer organization.

We wish him nothing but the best.

Gingrich faults media on Cain harassment claims

(AP) ? Republican candidate Newt Gingrich is decrying media coverage of the sexual harassment claims against rival Herman Cain and says that Cain's tax plans deserve more attention.

Gingrich has told WSB radio in Atlanta on Wednesday that he thinks it's "disgusting" that the news media has started what Gingrich described as a "witch hunt" against Cain. It was revealed this week that Cain's former employer, the National Restaurant Association, settled in the 1990s with two women who claimed that Cain had sexually harassed them.

A third woman has told The Associated Press that she considered filing a sexual harassment complaint but never did.

Gingrich says Cain is trying to help a country that's in trouble and has gotten more coverage for what Gingrich termed gossip than for Cain's tax policies.

Convicted Maryland murderer gets prison, not death sentence (Reuters)

BEL AIR, Md (Reuters) ? The first defendant to test Maryland's new death penalty statute, a man convicted of killing a gas station owner in a murder-for-hire scheme, was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole on Wednesday

The jury in Harford County Circuit Court deliberated for six hours before rejecting the prosecution's effort to sentence Walter Bishop Jr., 29, to death under the state's law, adopted in 2009 and considered the most restrictive in the nation.

To be eligible for the death penalty, Maryland's law requires DNA or video evidence linking the defendant to a murder or video of a voluntary interrogation and confession. The jury ruled a video of Bishop confessing to police fulfilled the requirement.

But the jury also took into consideration factors that weighed against a death sentence, the foreman told the court.

The foreman said the panel could not unanimously agree that Bishop was solely responsible for the murder or that he would be a danger to others if he lived. He said the panel also considered Bishop's lack of family support and his substance dependency, and mercy.

During the trial, defense attorneys noted that Bishop was homeless and deep in child support debt for his five children.

The restrictiveness of the state's death penalty law had no effect on the trial outcome, said John Cox, a prosecutor with the Assistant State's Attorney's Office of Baltimore County. He said he respected the jury's decision.

Harun Shabazz, one of Bishop's public defenders, agreed the death penalty law did not affect the outcome.

But he questioned why the state sought the death penalty, noting Bishop had not served previous prison time and was not the only person involved in the killing.

"This was never a capital case," Shabazz said afterward. "The death penalty is reserved for the worst of the worst."

Bishop was convicted last month of fatally shooting William Porter in 2010, allegedly at the behest of Porter's wife Karla. She is accused of offering to pay Bishop $9,000 for the murder, is charged with first-degree murder and is awaiting trial.

Bishop showed no reaction when the jury announced his sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Afterward, William Porter's mother, Margaret, declined to say whether she had hoped for the death sentence. "You couldn't find a finer man," she said of her 47-year-old son.

On Tuesday, a teary-eyed Bishop apologized in court to the jury and the Porter family for putting them through the ordeal.

"Every morning when I wake up, I relive the events of March 1," Bishop said. "It haunts me while I'm asleep, it haunts me when I'm awake."

The case involved a judge and prosecutors from Baltimore County but moved to Harford County due to pretrial publicity.

In the sentencing phase, the jury must unanimously agree to a death sentence. If not, it must agree unanimously to a sentence of life in prison without parole. Failing that, the default sentence is life with the possibility of parole.

Bishop could be eligible for parole in about 50 years.

Karla Porter, who allegedly ordered the murder because her husband was abusive, faces trial in the spring.

Five people have been executed in Maryland since the death penalty was reinstated in the United States in 1976, according to the Washington-based Death Penalty Information Center. Five people are on death row there.

After Illinois abolished its similarly restrictive death penalty law this year, Maryland's became the most restrictive, said Richard Dieter, the center's executive director.

Sexual Harassment Claims Against Cain: Much Ado About Nothing (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | News that GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain might have been involved in a sexual harassment scandal in the 1990s is nothing more than a deliberate attempt by opponents to unfairly disgrace the candidate who frankly, due to his commentary on Muslims, has disgraced himself enough to disqualify himself.

I'm not saying there wasn't a case. There likely was. There was likely even a payout, but that doesn't mean that in the 1990s Cain stepped outside of the norm of convention and sexually harassed anyone.

I lived through the sexual harassment movement in the 1990s, shortly after the era of braless women and dolfin running shorts. Back then, sexual harassment was a catch phrase, used to define everything that had anything to do with highlighting the differences that existed between men and women, especially in the workplace. It was a valuable and empowering time for women, but men got a raw deal.

In the early 1990s I was fired from my job as a waiter on grounds of sexual harassment. My crime? A group of women in their mid-30s, who were notorious for tipping poorly, left me a generous tip. When the head waitress asked me how I managed it, I told her it was because I'm a guy. Insensitive? Maybe, but hardly the stuff of sexual harassment.

When culture shifts happen, such as what empowered women more fully in the workplace in the 1990s, a lot of witches seem to be burned needlessly at stakes. But it is unfair to hold people responsible, even presidential candidates, for their behavior before a standard was agreed upon, and during a time when the definition of the standard was in such limbo that unfounded accusations killed careers.

I dislike Cain immensely. I find him bigoted, shortsighted and wholly unworthy of the office of president. But if we are to hold him accountable for sexual harassment in the 1990s, then we must also hold everyone accountable who chose the wrong side of the debate during the civil rights era, and in 20 years, those who now rail against same-sex marriage. Society moves forward in baby steps. There are a lot of reasons to dislike the former Godfather's Pizza CEO. Sexual harassment is a side show.

FBI: Georgia militia members plotted attacks

Four Georgia men in their 60s and 70s were arrested Tuesday, accused of being members of a right-wing militia group that plotted to attack federal office buildings and to disperse a deadly biological poison in Atlanta.

Their alleged plot was revealed to the FBI by a confidential informant last spring, and members of the group have been meeting since May with someone they thought was a black-market weapons dealer but who turned out to be an undercover federal agent, according to court documents.

No attacks were ever attempted. Federal officials say the men were disrupted before they could act on the plot.

The documents say the men, Frederick Thomas, 73, of Cleveland, Ga.; Dan Roberts, 67, Ray Adams, 65, and Samuel Crump, 68, all of Toccoa, called themselves "the covert group" and began in March to talk about staging attacks against federal targets including the IRS.

A confidential informant secretly recorded some of the meetings for the FBI.

"I'd say the first ones that need to die is the ones in the government buildings," Adams was overheard saying in an April 16 meeting, according to the FBI.

"When it comes down to it, I can kill somebody," he allegedly said.

They allegedly obtained a silencer from the undercover agent and plotted to buy explosives. Crump claimed he could produce ricin, a deadly biological agent, and talked about dispersing it from a car driving on an interstate highway, according to court documents.

"Ya get on the trunk of Atlanta, you get up on the north side, ya get on 41, ya throw it out there right on 285, ya go up 41 or 75, go up 75 to get away from it. Keep the heater on, that way keeps the pressure out. Don't roll your window down," he told the informant, according to court documents.

According to federal investigators, Crump had worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta in the past doing "maintenance-type services" for a contractor, and Adams used to work for a U.S. Department of Agriculture agency called the Agricultural Research Service as a lab technician.

"While many are focused on the threat posed by international violent extremists, this case demonstrates that we must also remain vigilant in protecting our country from citizens without our own borders who threaten our safety and security," said the U.S. attorney in Atlanta, Sally Quillian Yates, in a written statement.

DirecTV to continue airing Fox shows (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? DirecTV Group, the largest U.S. satellite TV provider, said on Monday it will continue carrying all shows by Fox Networks, a week after a dispute broke out between the two over carriage fees.

Fox, which is owned by News Corp, had asked DirecTV's customers to pay 40 percent more for the same channels they already received, DirecTV said on October 21, and this could have led to DirecTV discontinuing all Fox channels from November 1.

"We both know the past ten days have been challenging, but we're pleased that both sides could eventually come together to ensure our viewers continue to enjoy Fox programing," the companies said in a statement.
