Insurance an option for pothole damage | WAVY.com | Norfolk, Va.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Filing an insurance claim for damage sustained from potholes on the interstate is an option many drivers may not have considered.

Heavy rainfall 10 days ago exposed several potholes on Interstate 264 eastbound and left many drivers with costly damage.

Colin Owens with State Farm insurance said you should know that hitting a pothole often does count as a collision.

"If you hit a fence... well, the fence was there, but you did have some control over what happens to your vehicle as opposed to a deer coming across the road. It's really hard to avoid that," Owens said.

If you are worried about a rate hike, Owens said every case is handled differently by various providers, so don't be afraid to call before paying for the damage straight from your wallet.

"It just varies. Everything is a case by case basis but have them take a look at your policy. They'll always do the best they can to help you get the situation handled," Owens said.
