Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" Adds Customized GNOME 3 Shell to Beginner-Friendly OSLinux Mint, probably the most beginner-friendly Linux system out there, has hit version 12 with quite a few neat features and improvements. It's free to download and try out on just about any computer.
