According to Hindu epic Ramayana and district gazetteers Jodhpur Abhiras were original inhabitants of Jodhpur. It is a historic city, which was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459 AD. The people in and around Jodhpur are called as Marwaris.
It has a hot and semi-arid climate, and the monsoon season is from June to September.
Handicrafts industry is a major industry here. Furniture made here is exported on a large scale.
