Taking care of your base layer clothing

Base layer clothing is essential in sports and training wear and contributes to an enhanced performance. Whether you play rugby or you are just an avid cyclist, base layer clothing becomes essentially important in rigorous sports and exercises. Base layers regulate body temperature, compress muscles and wick moisture away from the body. When you play in the heat, sweating creates discomfort and makes your clothing feel heavy. In order to stay light and free of excess moisture, you should layer your clothing with base layer garments. These transport the moisture away from the skin on to the surface and allow it to evaporate quickly. Base layer clothing made for cold weather keep your body warm and insulated against the cold. These garments are made from synthetic materials, wool and silk. Merino and Ibex wool make excellent wool base layers.

Base layer clothing is also called ?compression wear? because the fabric stretches and fits comfortably on to your muscles. This reduces muscle strain and the build up of lactic acid in your body. Base layer apparel is lightweight and does not add extra weight to your body.

When it comes to cleaning your base layer clothing, make sure to follow the washing instructions. Synthetic base layer garments need a thorough rinse and a proper wash to clean the detergents completely. Look for a specialized cleaning product if you are unsure of the one you own. Enzyme-based cleaners help fight odour. Rinsing your base layer garment after every use, helps keep it in a good condition. Do not leave it around without washing it first; this can cause strong odour and bacteria development along with the gather of dirt.

Do not iron, bleach or dry clean this type of clothing. During washing separate base layer clothing from others that have zippers, clasps and anything that can cause ripping. Using fabric softeners can eliminate the wicking properties of base layers.

Merino wool is another type of base layer fabric, which has high performance qualities in temperature control, comfort, moisture control and odour control. Avoid using strong detergents with merino wool base layers and washing with clothing items that can cause abrasions. Flat-drying or hang-drying is recommended with flat-drying often known to be the best option. Under Armour, Adidas, Nike, Canterbury and Kooga are some of the popular base layer brands available.
