On June 5, 1948, a YB-49 Flying Wing crashed northwest of Muroc AFB, Calif. The copilot, Capt. Glen Edwards died in the crash; a year and a half later the California base was renamed Edwards AFB.?The ceremony was held on January 27, 1950 in connection with Armed Forces Day to rename the base in honor of Capt. ?Edwards. The plaque unveiled that day, misspelled his first name as Glenn, and was later corrected. The base of the plaque reads: A pioneer of the Flying Wing in the western skies, with courage and daring unrecognized by himself.
