Newark residents now have recreational opportunities in a place where there were limited options before.
The new rec center just a block from the Passaic River has been dubbed the Waterfront. It will offer an array of activities including, rock climbing, after-school programs, a fitness center, and even a golf simulator. The nearly $10 million facility was built with a mix of both federal and city funds. ?Newark Housing Authority Executive Director Keith Kinard says it will help to improve the quality of life for neighborhood residents.
?The inspiration for the project was really the residents across the street because they were from the day I got here complaining about lack of activities for their kids, and when I looked around to have 200 units of housing and not even a tot lot was a shame and so we knew we had to do something.?
The center will be open to all Newark residents for a minimum fee based on income.
