Order of Myths Parade Cancelled for Fat Tuesday

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) - The final parade of Mardi Gras in Mobile was cancelled due to weather, police said Tuesday.

Mobile Police told Local 15 News by request of the Order of Myths, one of the oldest and most secretive Mardi Gras associations in Mobile, the parade was cancelled due to the threat of lightening. The OOM's Parade is traditionally the final parade of the Carnival season.

It is not likely the parade will be rescheduled as this Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, begins the 40-day Lenten season.

"I can't recall the last time this has happened," Excelsior Band Bass Drummer Gerome Bryant said. "People have been planning for this all year long, and it's sad that it's going to end like this."

1993 Miss Alabama Kaylyn Chapman James said she was disappointed that the final parade was cancelled, having traveled with her family from Miami for the festivities.

"I come every year, and I haven't seen it rain like this in years," James said. "I heard someone say it hasn't happened like this since 1995."
