For a long time now, we have been told that customer service is so important for ones business at all levels. And it does not matter if you are a one man band or a International business with outlets and offices all over the world.
When things go wrong (as they will do ? sorry but it is true), the way you interact with the customer is so important. We all need to remember that the customer is always right. And when you have an online business Customer Service is still important, but before we get into the main part a little story.
Unless you have been hiding your head in the sand we are in a major downturn of retail sales, yes some niches are seeing an upturn and others are seeing sales but not at the volume of a few years ago. And this is the same in all areas. Today I attended the Spring Fair here in the UK. This is a major gift and related industry trade show. While the show appeared busy (it is very hard to say as this is a massive show over many halls), there were many stands with just the sales reps standing there??..and most looked so bored. In fact I made it my mission to try and make some of them smile?..and it took quite a few goes I can tell you.
I went onto one stall with someone I knew and he was a customer of theirs and was interested in some new lines, and the sales guy was so laid back and uninterested it was unbelievable. But in contrast there were companies there who had energy, the staff were alive, smiling and bubbly??Guess what? They had a full stand.
The above is one area of customer service, and one of the most important. If a company puts people off coming onto a stand or onto a website guess what, people will not come, and they will go off and find a seller who knows what customer service is.
So as online sellers we need to make sure our site is welcoming, easy to use, and clients can find what they need, without going through many hoops.
