The new 2014 Subaru Forester crossover launched in Japan about a month ago and sales are off to a sprinting start. Subaru says 8149 Japanese customers took home the new Forester, more than four times the automaker?s initial monthly sales target set.
Subaru?s decision to offer its new EyeSight system in the new Forester appears to be a smart one, as 86.6 percent of 2014 Forester customers opted for the safety feature. EyeSight is the brand?s suite of safety and accident avoidance technologies including collision mitigation, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control Subaru?s version includes two cameras mounted above the rear-view mirror, monitors the road and has the ability to preload the brakes and reduce engine power to help avoid an accident. In the U.S., the safety tech launched on the refreshed 2013 Legacy and 2013 Outback.
On naturally aspirated four-cylinder 2013 Subaru Legacys and 2013 Subaru Outbacks, the EyeSight safety system is available in a $3940 package on the Limited trim that also includes a moonroof and a navigation system. Though we have yet to hear back from Subaru, we would be surprised if the technology isn?t offered on a lower-trim model before the new Forester is redesigned in 5-6 model years.
The new 2014 Forester is set to arrive on our shores by spring next year and will sport new styling and two engine choices including a 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer-four rated at 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque (the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder carries over with an output of 170 hp and 174 lb-ft). U.S. sales of the current-generation Forester totaled 5703 in November.
