One of the things that are so difficult for a young person to deal with is the unknown of an eating disorder. One of the unknowns is how long treatment or re-feeding is going to take.
During a coaching phone call today I was talking to a 14 year old girl and her parents. She said the thing that is the hardest for her is the unknown of the eating disorder. Her exact words were, ?The unknown of this illness is killing me. I feel like it will never end.?
We were talking about the despair she feels most of the time. She is afraid she will never feel better, have the energy she used to have and be able to get through the day without obsessing about food. This unknown seemed to be one of the biggest anxieties she was experiencing.
Families hear stories about treatment that take 2 or 3 years. Sometimes girls don?t recover and grow up into adults with continuing struggles of anorexia or bulimia.
It is frightening and discouraging enough for girls to try to get better with ED breathing down their necks. Not knowing if eating all this food is even going to result in recovery increases their anxiety, despair and fear of failure.
The Maudsley Approach or Family Based Treatment has an average length of 6 months to a year. Girls need to know this information. Increased calories and the necessity of eating so much to gain weight will not last forever.
This particular young woman also said, ?I need to work toward goals.? So we immediately discussed the probability that her Maudsley treatment will yield the same result of other families who have used this approach.
Also that if she continues to eat what her parents put in front of her; at the rate she was currently gaining she would be weight restored by the end of the summer. It may still feel like a long time but having an end in sight was very calming and encouraging for her.
This reinforced allowing her parents to have control for a manageable period of time. It also served as a way to praise her efforts and how hard she was working to eat more.
Even though the result of weight gain is anxiety provoking, it gave the part of her that wants to get well hope; that this intensity level of treatment is not forever.
So why is this article written for your child? So she can see that if her parents are using the Maudsley Approach, what she is going through right now is temporary. There is hope today with each bite she takes. A few more months is more manageable than the year or two she may have been told it will take for her to get better with the standard form of individual therapy.
Your child needs hope and so do you. She needs to see this is not forever and so do you. If you use the Maudsley Approach the chances are greater for a shorter length of treatment and success. No one treatment works for everyone, but if I were you I would look into Maudsley and see if it could be a good fit for your family.
